50% increase in players total players sold in 2 months is a pretty good effect.

I don't expect Toshiba would lie about such numbers.

""June 11, 2007 - In what would appear to be a weekly tradition now, the HD-DVD Promotions Group is announcing yet more progress for the format in its struggle with Blu-ray. According to the HD-DVD camp, the format now accounts for 60% of all next-gen DVD set-top players sold to this point in time. The figure does not count the PlayStation 3. The group also announced that HD-DVD is achieving a 4 to 1 movie attach rate over Blu-ray, and set a new high for movie sales in May, highlighted by more than 75,000 units sold in the last week of the month.

Last month was apparently a good one for both formats, with actual consumer spending on HD-DVD and Blu-ray combining to $5.2-million, 31% more than the previous combined record. ""::

Can YOu ALL BELIEVE THIS ??? I THINK IGN IS JUST BECOMING TOO MUCH OF AN ANTI SONY SITE SINCE I DONT SEE ANY OF +VE SONY NEWS THERE AND THEREFORE WILL STOP PAYING THEM FOR SUBSCRIPTION FROM THIS YEAR ON. Am going to gamespot from now on.

But whats with this new Stat that HD dvd has come out with ????
Lets face it...as much as we don't want to admit it....we need a $299 BD player in the market now not by the end of the year (http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9693198-1.html), hell make it 1080i like the comp (GPX brand will work)...it's all about the average consumer; I've said it before unfortunately best value lowest price wins.

Toshiba is worse than M$.

Toshiba would most certainly lie about the numbers. Do you think they would come out with the real numbers that show Blu-ray killing HD-DVD? They have everything to lose with this HD-DVD gamble.

Why would they care about spreading misinformation so long as it helps confuse the consumer and sell their crap players.

You should learn to take any info coming from the HD-DVD camp with a grain of salt.

Yep. All of those new hd-dvd owners are just going to buy a blu-ray player or sell their hd-dvd player once they realize that they bought into the wrong format.

Same thing happened with Betamax.

Why the hell would they even post this crap, spin, bullsh*t, when it's from an HD-DVD promotions group?!

I thought IGN had more sense...

Agreed. Lower prices will also draw in people with less more to spend on the software/movies. Lowering prices is always a last ditch effort. Content wins wars.

Blu-Ray lowering prices is an effect of more efficient manufacturing of the technology and a forced counter-move to prevent HD-DVDs strategy from actually working.

They adjusted their estimate to a more realistic number. their original 1.8 million estimate was just crazy. 1 million is still pretty high but more realistic than 1.8 million. if they can keep selling the Standalone players at a fast pace and have the usual upswing for electronics during the holidays they might come close to 1 million stand alone sales.

On the flipside would it be just as much BS if it came from the BD promotion group? Get real. Statistics are manipulated by everyone, it always has and always will. This is nothing new. Whether it's HD DVD, BD, politicians, etc everyone takes the statistics and spins it their way.

Gerry Block is a M$ tool. I have gotten in numerous arguments with him before about his blind devotion to HD-DVD and M$. He is the only one on IGN that covers the format war and you will never see a positive article about Blu-ray on IGN. He has taken it upon himself to spread to the lies and misinformation and try to change public opinion of HD-DVD.

That's going to be hard considering that BB/CC/Comp USA/Target/Wal-Mart have all already started phasing out HD-DVD. You will most likely be hard-pressed to even find a HD-DVD player for sale by this Christmas.

When the HD DVD promotion group was claiming that HD DVD standalones were outselling BD by 4:1, that was proven false early this year by actual sales data showing only a very small increase in HD DVD player sales over stand alone BD sales. But, when the PS3 is being used as the primary BD transport even by many "professional" reviewers, it's obvious that those sales can't be dismissed.

The whole attach rate nonsense is utterly laughable. Lets ignore the fact that most people don't buy movies as much as some of us more dedicated early adopters. So, attach rates are always going to decrease as market penetration increases. HD DVD advertising higher attach rates with lower player sales, is a promotion for BD, not the other way around. But the way the HD DVD promotion group wants to conveniently ignore PS3 sales, except when they talk about attach rates... come on. They can't have it both ways. Either the PS3 is a viable player in which case BD has a dramatic lead in player sales; or it's not, in which case (assuming HD DVDs standalone figures are correct this time) BD has a far higher attach rate.
Becasue there is no way to separate those out and get attach rates for only stand alone players. That data doesn't exist. They only have total title sales and the number of PS3/HD DVD add ons and the stand alones. They have no idea if the titles were purchased by a person with a stand alone player or a PS3/HD DVD addon.

Not at the BB/CC/Walmarts near me. CompUSA is basically gone from this area and I haven't been to Target in a while so I don't know about them. But in the last two BB, and Walmart stores i was in, HD DVD and BD had approximately equal space. I didn't look at the CC since I was looking at the new Toshiba 1080P DLP sets to replace my old Samsung 1080P Dlp set.

Last week I was at the Fair Lakes/Dulles/Manassas BB's and all three have doubled the size of their Blu-ray section and slightly shrunken their HD-DVD section. They had 3 Blu-ray players on display and no HD-DVD players to be found. A lot of people are reporting similar changes nationwide. BB should be pretty much Blu-ray only by the end of the year.

Similar changes are occurring at the other stores I went to.

That is ok. The only problem with their statistics is, that when counting hardware asles, they all of a sudden forget to include PS3s, obviously to make their numbers look ok.
