OK, this was rather unexpected, but Universal actually replied to my request for clarification which I sent them a few days ago.
Here's the content of those emails (mine and theirs) in full: Quote:

ChatGPT's interpretation:
Here’s what the response confirms: 1. Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos are confirmed: > "The new Dolby Vision masters & Atmos audio were upgrades from the previous masters for all 4 movies." So yes, the upcoming discs will include DV and DA, and the Atmos mixes are new, remixed at Skywalker from original audio masters. 2. No new film scans: > "The new Dolby Vision masters were created using the original masters from the previous transfers..." This strongly suggests that there was not a new 4K scan of the original camera negatives for Jurassic Park or Jurassic Park III (or any of them, really). They reused the same transfers that were done earlier—likely the ones many fans complained about. 3. Color grading updates only: > "...with updated color applied to all four titles." This means the main visual change is a new color grade for Dolby Vision, not a new transfer or remaster from raw scans. --- What does this mean for fans like us? - If your main issue was the existing transfer (especially JP1 and JP3), this release likely won’t fix that, aside from potential improvements in dynamic range and color through Dolby Vision. - It’s essentially a regrade of the same old 4K transfer, not a new remaster from the original film elements. - So unless they did something drastically different in the color grading to fix the issues we care about (which seems unlikely without mentioning it explicitly), we probably won’t see the level of improvement we’re hoping for. |

ChatGPT is most definitely the key to solving this conundrum.

It is possible to regrade the films with the existing film transfers. So the color grades may indeed be vastly different. The existing scan likely has no issues, its what you do with that scan afterwards that's key (grading, HDR, DNR, etc.). So we'll see. |

![]() But it makes no sense because The Lost World, even if it reuses the existing master, will still get a new disc with DV and Atmos so why not give it a new artwork? It's so annoying! Last edited by Mierzwiak; 05-02-2025 at 07:06 PM. |

If you want to get more into the weeds the Uni response noted that the previous masters for “all 4 movies” were being re-used, which doesn’t make sense since it’s a question was pertaining to the original three movies. So if you were to take into account all six “Jurassic” movies, four of which seem to retain the original disc artwork (and have transfers that have been praised), then of course those four films wouldn’t need a remaster but simply a DV color application while the other two films had more work done and they decided to update the disc artwork as well. Or maybe they accidentally typed 4 and not 3.

Question remains if DNR is baked to the the master of the first movie. And if not, is Uni even see it as a problem, and is willing to reign it down? |

I think ChatGPT might have written the response to start with.
![]() To me, it sounds like some regrading was done to the existing 4K masters, and that the audio is a new remix from the original stems. For the former, it probably won't be night and day, but there might be some potential for improvement to the color, at least. As for the latter, I'd prefer the original audio tracks, but Skywalker does pretty well with this sort of thing, so maybe that'll be an improvement on the previous releases, too. |
