I actually like the chipboard box, but the keep case covers are dumb.

The inner side of the covers are just the same as the outer covers, minus the front text and the rear NERV logo, so fairly uninspired black with coloured stripes.

I am going to cancel the CE since I have to but I am getting the basic one even though my heart belongs to the CE I just can't right now.

That's lame. If you don't care for the ADV dub then there's really no big reason to purchase it. I'm glad I cancelled mine and went with standard.

It's probably for the best, especially since you've already got the fancy Japanese BD boxset from 2015.

Of course I really don't care for either of the more-expensive editions, to the extent that even if I had Jeff Bezos' money I'd still get the regular 5-disc version. The only unique non-dub content on the 11-disc releases is the "Video Format version" of EoE, and I've already got that on Japanese DVD and Blu-ray as it is.

It's more like a budget release with a slipcover than a standard edition, it's just that disappointing. Even the discs have no art work.

But eh, it's on Blu-ray and at a good value so that's what matters most. It took years for this to finally happen in the West.

Looking at this Youtube unboxing the included regular release's discs have the same text-based "art" as the seen in the stock pictures of the CE and UE releases, so I can't see any viable cause for complaint. If anything, they're an improvement over the blue-on-black of the 2015 Japanese BDs and the black-on-blue of the 2019 "Standard Edition" rerelease in terms of legibility. As for the packaging, the fact that it's in a "standard" 5-disc Amaray case is basically immaterial for the vast majority of Western buyers of the regular edition. Better that than some digipak made out of flimsy materials, if you ask me.

If I had a time machine and told my past self in July 2021 that I'd be able to get the TV series (sans "FMttM") plus Revival of Evangelion and all the previously Japan-exclusive bonus features subbed in English for $38 I wouldn't have believed it. I may well have believed the "working time machine" part more readily than a $38 retail price for an Evangelion box set. I honestly expected a $99 MSRP as a best-case scenario and $125 - $150 as being more likely for the lowest-cost SKU at that time. The packaging wouldn't have even entered the conversation.

I'm just used to seeing art on disc so it's a bit disappointing.

Like, FUNimation makes crappy releases, but the packaging and disc art looks good:

Evangelion has never been known for great disc art. None of the ADV Films releases had character art on them, just plain text on silver. Fullmetal Alchemist is another franchise in a similar situation, it's never had character art on the discs and this applies to both adaptations.

You must have missed a long period where FUNimation had very bland disc art that also had hard to read text. Starting with Fractale and Panty & Stocking, from August 2012 until sometime in 2019, nearly all FUNimation releases had pretty bland disc art, and this includes Dragon Ball Z, the season set Blu-rays have very bland disc art. The only change was starting in 2015, any show that got a limited edition release would see actual disc art. This was a really dark era for FUNimation graphic design, I imagine their graphic designers (which FUNimation refuses to credit outside of the menu design credits) also really didn't like it. Some shows that had actual disc art, when they got re-released, they got downgrades, this happened to Eden of the East, School Rumble, Soul Eater, and Spice & Wolf to name a few (the last one hurts so much, the original releases of Spice & Wolf have fantastic disc art). Some examples of releases with bland disc art and FUNimation is still like "look at these beautiful discs".
Also, something unfortunate, after FUNimation finally got back to doing actual disc art, now on most shows, they default to using the key art for the front covers. The key art isn't always the best art to use for front covers. Like look at what Discotek Media, RightStuf, Sentai Filmworks and even Media Blasters (who hasn't been great at graphic design, likely a result of Merideth Mulroney leaving around 2013) does by comparison.

I don't care as much about disc art than I do about the content on the discs. Decent visuals, series, summary, and movie? check. that's all i care about

Has anyone confirmed which subtitles are used on these sets? The press releases implied that as well as different dubs on each sets there were going to be different subs. If so does the "basic" release only have the "you are worthy of my grace" subs and I'd have to get one of the more expensive sets for the "classic" subtitles?

Netflix subs only on the regular edition, ADV Films and Manga Entertainment subs only on the discs with the old dubs which are only in the Collector's and Ultimate Editions. BTW, the Netflix translation was tweaked a little in 2020, including that line.

Thanks for the detailed information! I'll do a bit of research into the tweaked Netflix subs and decide which version to go for.

Here's how it changed for that line, no idea about anything else.

Unfortunately it’s only in the subtitled version. The dub version of that scene is still ruined. IIRC, even the altered subtitled version still tones down “I love you” to “I like you.”

Jesus, my copy from Best Buy arrived today early which is good.
What's not good is that the package was opened when I got it. The slip is bent in a corner, but everything seemed to be in tact. Will open it and see the discs. The mailman must've thought it was a Playstation game or something and just delivered it when they were disappointed it was an anime set, lol. Aren't I lucky.
