Need quick advice:

Picked up a Switch today at GS for my son for Christmas. (was afraid they might get harder to find later) And I declined the warranty from them for 2 years for $60.00 and now I am thinking about going back and adding it. My son is 10 and has had a 3DS XL for almost 4 years with no issues. I"m hoping it will pretty much stay docked but I know at some point he will go mobile with it. We already have a good hard travel case for it and a good screen protector for it. Did you go yes or no on the warranty?

Thanks,

Thanks,
At 10 I took very good care of my stuff. My brother on the other hand, broke everything. Is you son more like me or my brother? If he's more like me, you should be fine. Every console I've owned is still in working order with zero-to-minimal scratches.

That being said, my 9 year old niece was over on Sunday and she dropped her game controller twice.

Thanks,

Just FYI, keeping it docked isn't the best idea. It gets really hot in there when the dock is plugged in. There've been stories of screen protectors melting, even game cards warping from the heat. Personally I wouldn't leave it in there for more than 2-3 hours at a time.

For charging I recommend plugging the AC adapter's cord into the port beneath the screen directly. After that, best to just leave it in that travel case you have until he's ready to play with it again.

The Walmart exclusive Splatoon 2-colored Switch (with Splatoon 2 and a carrying case) is in stock right now for $380.

Mines been primarily docked since I got it on March 3rd. It gets pretty warm when playing graphically intensive games, but I've had no issues (no screen protector though, and most recommend the tempered glass ones which obviously won't melt).

It doesn't get warm at all when its in sleep mode. Switch also has built in protection to shut down if it gets too hot, so one shouldn't break it from heat while playing docked either.

I've had sessions of Zelda of 6+ hours during my week off and had no issues at all. My console is in a wide open space.

I waited until the weekend for my first session and I played it docked for at least 5 hours. Absolutely no issues. I have had 4 hour session since and again, zero issues.

About the heat issue, I do notice that since I've played in TV mode outside of the dock, the Switch first run much cooler than TV mode inside the dock. Games like Mario Kart 8 would get the Switch hot to the touch in the dock, and only minorly warm outside the dock. You can try it yourself by getting a USB-C extension cable, plugging one end into the dock and the other end into the Switch.

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/201...use_game_cards

The whole thing is worth a read, but here's an interesting clipping:

Quote:
Nintendo avoided too many bad headlines in the first six months of the Switch's lifespan, as the types of games it showcased had relatively compact file sizes. However, now that the console has gained momentum, third-parties are keen to bring more intensive games to the platform and this is causing some teething troubles. With future boosts in efficiency we’ll perhaps see a 32GB game card become a much more viable option for publishers, and in the long-term 64GB game cards are likely to become a reality – but both will come at a cost initially, so in the short-term you should expect to see more third-parties either charge more (the infamous "Switch Tax") for games or demand that players download additional data to their microSD card.

Do you think carts will come with a code that allows the additional download or will it be enough to have the cart? . If it's a download code then that really eliminates buying 2nd hand.

I know resident evil comes with a code but that's a 2nd game so it's really nba 2k18 I'm wondering about and future large games.

It should be the same as any other update. Put the card in and it will ask if you want to play right away or download an update.

The developers of Lichtspeer: Double Speer Edition held a Reddit AMA yesterday. Tom Tomaszewski from Crunching Koalas participated, and shared some interesting comments.

First, when asked why Lichtspeer doesn’t have rankings. Tomaszewski replied with the following:
Quote:
Nintendo doesn’t have an official support for Achievements and Leaderboards, like Sony or Microsoft but we know that they’re working on it. We’ll see how it goes and we’ll add the rankings along the way.

After seeing those comments, a Reddit user brought up that an achievement system for Switch would seem like a secret. Tomaszewski said in response:
Quote:
Oops.
Move along. Nothing to see here.
PS. But seriously – I have a really strong feeling they hinted it a few times. [Tom]
We’ve been going back and forth as to whether or not we should share this here. Tomaszewski does seem to know what he’s talking about, but perhaps his own conjecture is mixed in based on the “hints” he’s seen. We’ll nonetheless be reaching out to Tomaszewski in hopes of clarifying.

A system-wide achievement system isn’t something Nintendo has shown a whole lot of interest in recent years. However, some elements have been built into specific games. It remains to be seen if Nintendo intends to pursue achievements more seriously on Switch.

Developers need to understand you do not need a universal trophy system in order to have trophies/achievements in a game.

Super Smash Bros. has had trophies for the longest time, dating back decades.
Disgaea 5 also has trophies on the Switch.
Disney Infinity had achievements (called "Feats") on the Wii U.
Goldeneye64 and Perfect Dark both had achievements on the N64.
etc.

You can have built-in trophies/achievements within the game itself.

Yeah but who cares unless you can show them off to the world by having a public record on your profile of said awards? In game trophies are pointless if you can prove your score is bigger than theirs

Personally, I think it's excellent news that a trophy system could be on its way. A constant record of achievements is very desirable for many people.

I've very rarely every chased trophies/achievements, but I do like having the system wide record and overall score. Nice to occasionally look through and reminisce about past gaming experiences, look at friends lists and see what they've played/been playing a lot (earning a lot of trophies from). I've used the latter to find new games to try at times just from seeing randoms I've added for various games having played a lot of games I liked having a ton of trophies from some game I've never played.
