It appears a new 4K DCP was done in 2023?

I dug back a little bit and that was apparently just one of the 'eyes' from the 2013 3D version but shown in 2D. They put that together back in 2022, Park Circus showed it in the UK. So it was the same thing they'd been showing over and over except "newly" in 4k, if reports are correct. Still remains to be seen what these "new" discs will be.

Do you have a good source on that?
Kinda funny to think someone in charge of running the film went with the 3D master over the 2D one (though IMHO they made the right choice).

From Bill Hunt at TheDigitalBits.com:

Quote:
I’ve also heard back officially today from Universal about their new Jurassic Park 4K Trilogy Steelbook release, due on 6/17 (along with a Jurassic World 4K Trilogy Steelbook), and here the news isn’t quite so positive. The new Dolby Vision presentations are simply upgrades of the existing 4K masters already released on UHD in 2018, simply with new color grades. So these do not involve new 4K scans. However, the Atmos mixes for all three films are genuinely new, having been recently re-mixed at Skywalker Sound from the original audio stems. So while it’s good news on the audio front, it’s less so on the video side of things.
That being said, I wonder how much of a difference the Dolby Vision color grading might make (I doubt it would be zero)

So they're the "existing 4K masters" except with "new color grades" and aren't "new 4K scans" (which shouldn't be necessary anyway)? I think after reading that, I know about the same as I did before reading it.

It's just anecdotal discussion in this thread and elsewhere, search and see! It's not far off anyway cuz the 4k disc utilized the same master pre 3D conversion. The theatrical 4k DCP was a quick and dirty 3D but in 2D.

Sounds like he read what was posted here and ran with it as "studio sources told me"

Need these to hurry up and get here! Still feeling like there's miscommunication going on. Universal needs more in-the-know consumer relations people!

That’s still such a vague response. Okay so they’re not new scans, but “new color grades” would be a weird way to say “it’s exactly the same 4K master with Dolby Vision added.” We may be grasping at straws here but I’m hoping the films were regraded closer to their original color, maybe supervised by Spielberg or Dean Cundey.

Yeah, Hunt's post isn't helpful at all. Jurassic Park doesn't need a new scan, it needs a new master. Slapping Dolby Vision on top of the existing master on 4k blu isn't going to accomplish anything. Guess we'll see what these are when they're released since Universal's communications folk seem to be just as confused as us.

I don’t place much faith in the likely intern level people who man the email desk at these places, they often don’t have any more information than we do.

Coming from Bill you never know, but I'm sorry that sounds like a totally logical outcome. Ambiguous wording, zero info given, just pre-orders available.

Again I REALLY hope to be surprised but deep down we all know the score, it felt off right from the bat.

' Boy do I hate being right all the time!' (well in this case nothing I'd love more than being wrong )

While I agree it isn't super helpful, that's not on Bill. That's the response he received, and he has let people know that. If Universal is giving a wishy washy answer, then that's what it is.

So if it’s the same master and my projector doesn’t do Dolby vision no reason to upgrade. No way is it worth an upgrade for Atmos, the others have dts-x which might actually be better.

The DTS-X on the original 4K UHD of Jurassic Park has had the bass neutered and is much more anemic than the old DTS-HD MA 7.1 from the older blu-ray. I've heard that the old plain DTS from the old-timey DVD is even better.

If Universal treat this like they did the new Shaun of the Dead Atmos mix, it should be a whole lot better than the old one. The new Atmos mix for Shaun has much better bass and much better object placement than the old DTS-X version. Heck, if they make the video look as improved on Jurassic Park as they did on the new Shaun UHD, I'd be very happy.

We’re still in wait and see mode— the original 4k looked like they color-timed it to match the previous old Blu-ray transfer which is way off to how it should look (the 3D version is much closer). If they actually went back and color corrected it (“New Color Grades”) then we may have something significant here.

Of course, I won’t be shocked if that’s just marketing speak and they’re just the exact same versions with a Dolby Vision grade added.

Even if nothing was changed color wise, wouldn't they have to go back and re-run the transfer through the Dolby Vision flow since I think the 2018 version was only finished in HDR10/HDR10+? So it makes sense to me why they refer to it as a "new color grade". I just want to know if the new color grade is exactly the same but with dolby vision metadata, or if they made any substantial changes, and that will have to wait for actual reviews.
