16.6666% ? Weird!
VAT is 20% so that's what they should deduct.
I'm from the Netherlands where, up until October 1st, sales tax is 19%. When I order from Amazon UK they always lower the price by 1%. When ordering from outside of Europe, sales tax is a non-issue and should be completely omitted.

That's just idiotic. They can't keep the VAT anyway and have to pay that to the government so why would they charge their customers with unnecessary costs when they don't have to?

Actually, adding 20% to a price is the same as subtracting 16.666...% from the price with the 20% added.

Example:

The original price is $100. Add 20% and it's $120.

Subtract 16.666...% from $120 and you get $100. If you subtracted 20% it would be $96 which would be less than the pre-VAT price.

Since we are starting at the higher (including VAT) price, you subtract the 16.666...%.

But they don't have to pay the VAT to the government for goods they sell to the US or other non-VAT countries. They can just pocket it.

was going to explain, but movielib beat me to it. To work out VAT less price of advertised price, multiply advertised price by 5/6 (because advertised price is 6/5 of vat less price).

Ah you guys are way better with numbers than I am Thanks for explaining!
But what movielib is telling about the VAT they're keeping is really nasty.
They're just making 20% extra profit on items they're exporting. Nice way to treat foreign customers.

The limited edition and the smaller box are roughly the same price on Amazon, just a few quid differing, and the contents seem identical save for that exclusive book. Weird considering it's a 'limited' edition. Does anyone know the difference between them?

Default question

Question: Does the limited edition have all the discs inside the book similar to the Bond 50 set? or do you receive the book AND and the box set?

Yes, it looks like it will be a set similar to how the Bond 50 set is. A large book with pages of movie info and the discs in the pages.

That is the set I'm getting, the larger of the UK sets, the Limited Edition Masterpiece collection. I cannot wait as many of these are some of my favorite movies.

To me, it is worth the month wait for them to fix whatever they need to correct.

I just pre-ordered the limited edition again. Glad Universal is addressing the issues in this set.

Yes, that's why I hardly ever buy from the UK except from Amazon. Other companies rarely beat Amazon's prices for an American, and while what they do is not illegal, it's arguably unethical.

So very true. Lets hope when the next reviews are out in about a month all is as perfect as possible.

Will go with the normal box set IF the package looks good as its around for £60 rather than £100.

Default Hitch delayed

The Masterpiece Collection has been delayed by at least a month according to Amazon. Hopefully because better transfers are being done on those not up to the standard of Psycho and North by Northwest!

There won't be new/better transfers done. Not possible in 4 weeks and also Universal will not spend the money to do it. However I hope they are re-encoding the problem discs and removing the unnecessary DNR and other digital sharpening effects.

I wouldn't hold my breath on that. I don't think Universal will produce stunning transfers for all the films that are included in this set but I hope all of them will be solid upgrades over the DVDs. But, I do expect terrific transfers for Rear Window, Vertigo and The Birds.
