Heck, I even showed up on opening day for Avatar 2, despite having little or no emotional investment in any of the characters.

I absolutely was. Your opinion just differs from mine, and that’s perfectly all right. I don’t hate the film. It’s ok.

He's the resident Disney apologist. Disney cannot make a bad movie or do wrong. It's easier to just block him like most people have.

Sweetie pie, if I were an “apologist” for Disney, then the biggest thing to be an apologist about would be the Avatar movies… not a whole lot there aside from the eye candy.

(And yes it’s good eye candy, of course, but there’s not much substance to those movies)

Having a little trouble parsing your first line, up to the ellipses. Maybe I'm slow on the uptake, despite the double espresso I just downed.

I watched Captain Marvel a long time ago (purchased in July of 2019), so I don't really remember much of the detail, although I remember liking it. So, I was happy to see that character return, but I didn't know the other 2 main protagonists at all. This brought me into the film without any established feelings about those characters. If you went into the movie knowing those 3 and having feelings for them, that would account for part of why you liked the movie so much.

I agree on the Avatar films, although they fall a bit flat (pun absolutely intended) on even the 3-D eye candy level, as about 30% of each film is indeed flat, because J-Cam hates hyperstereo, so all those wide shots of alien landscapes are pretty much all in 2-D. Thanks a lot there, James.

Fair point. I appreciate Cameron experimenting with 3D and HFR, but it seems to be coming at the expense of narrative development.

Ok, now you have made me wonder how much attention you paid to this movie… because as it was mentioned more than once, Monica has known Carol since she was a little girl. She appeared (as a child) in Captain Marvel. She’s the daughter of Monica Rambeau, who was Carol’s best friend during her pilot days….

It’s ok that you don’t even pick up on the relationships between characters even when they are mentioned more than once… but it also shows that even the necessary exposition didn’t help you see how all of these characters fit together.

I saw the relationships as briefly shown in The Marvels. As to ancillary minor characters in a movie I saw one time six years ago, you're kidding right?

It turns out that of the many varied interests and hobbies I have in life, keeping track of every single detail or minor character in comic book movies, is not one of them.

Ok, so even after they explained in the movie how the 2 characters know each other, you still feel you don’t know one of them? What else would there be to know?

I didn't know them coming into the movie. There is (or should be) an expectation on the part of the filmmakers that someone will see this movie without having seen past films in the franchise. In other words, the film should stand on its own. I thought that the introductory and character developmental scenes didn't come even remotely close to facilitating the depth of feeling that you seem to have for these characters. To me, it all seemed forced and 2-dimensional. I wish it had been otherwise.

As far as how much attention I paid goes - I watched the movie, free of distractions. However, I was not taking notes or studying it in order to take an in-depth final exam with serious consequences.

Again, if the filmmakers could have been bothered to do the actual storytelling legwork to get us invested in these people and their relationships within the plot of the movie they were making instead of relying on the audience remembering that they showed up in other movies as children, the movie might have been a bit more successful!

Are you sure it's a he?

I believe once you figure out the answer you will begin to understand who you are dealing with.

I agree with you completely - a good film should stand on its own. And this one does, it explains the relationships between the leads and what they mean to each other and gets the exposition out of the way quickly enough.

“Depth of feeling” is not something that’s necessary in order to understand the arcs of each of the protagonists in this movie. It’s all explained early on, in a way that is easy to understand even for a newcomer (watched this with a friend who hadn’t seen any Marvel movies in years - she understood what made the relationships between the characters unique and why it was important for them)

Being able to listen to what the characters say about what happened before the events of this movie and being able to understand how their relationship progressed throughout the movie doesn’t really require “taking notes,” just a normal attention span.

I didn’t realise that “being invested” in someone was a prerequisite for enjoying a movie. I watch hundreds of new movies a year and I wouldn’t say I am particularly “invested” in every protagonist of every movie, and yet I enjoy watching them just fine

Unlike most people I watched all the D+ shows feeding in to this movie so I had no problem understanding who anyone was or what was going on. The movie was just slop to me. Perfectly watchable, brightly coloured throwaway slop featuring some of Marvel's least interesting characters and some cute kitties.

Yes, the kitties were extremely cute. Now imagine how much someone would absolutely adore the movie when already madly in love with all of the protagonists... plus Zawe Ashton (whose work I did not remember very well at the time) adding such a perfect sense of menace throughout the movie.

Watched it in the theater about a dozen times, with the 3D IMAX presentation being far and away the best.

I totes can't wait until we see Carol, Kamala and Monica again, hopefully in one of the Avengers movies, if not earlier.

This is probably the worst Marvel film to date and it felt almost like an episode of a daytime TV series. The kitties were cute though. Bought the MovieNex 3D disc in Tokyo so at least I didn't pay for expensive shipping.

I love cute kitties and I think the main cast did the best they could but Zawe Ashton came across like a Doctor Who villain (and I don't mean that in a good way). She was no more menacing than those cute kitties.

British TV and theatre-trained actors can often keep that style of acting when they transfer into movies and it just doesn't ring true for me in that medium. It's often something Americans don't notice so you end up with British actors in movies giving performances that I consider suitable only for children's television.
