To be honest I think they are still sorting things out with Toshiba behind the scenes.

Unfortunately I don't see any Universal or Paramount Blu ever coming to market until the Holiday season.

It will be sooner than that.

Announcements could come anytime after Cloverfield's DVD release.

I'm confused... why couldn't they come sooner?

I don't make it a habit of giving out info from sources I have... but I've been hearing Paramount rumors from people for like 8 weeks now. It's always "within the next week or two." Given the status of their titles in the replication line, etc, it may finally be right this time. But I'm no longer holding my breath.

It's obvious that they're in no hurry, to say the least. I'm sure they're dragging their feet partially in embarassment for their stupidity to begin with.

I have this conspiracy theory:

Paramount's top 3 selling DVD titles for the first half of 2008 will be Sweeney Todd, There Will Be Blood, and Cloverfield. They don't want to lose out on these sales because of people waiting for the Blu release.

They're keeping their Blu-Ray plans quiet until after these three high selling films hit DVD, and when they feel enough DVD owners (and impatient Blu owners) have bought these films on DVD, then they will announce Blu support.

That's why I don't think we'll be hearing anything from them until probably mid May at the soonest.

I don't really believe this, but unfortunately, the only way I could be proved right would be for Paramount to announce prior to next Tuesday ("Cloverfield" release date)... so I'll just leave it alone... other than two comments/questions:

Paramount could announce several titles, but simply leave out "Cloverfield" without affecting sales of "Cloverfield".

Paramount will sell plenty copies of "Cloverfield" on DVD... but their Blu-ray release won't sell as much... so it would be smarter for them to go ahead and announce the Blu-ray release. As most Blu-ray people would probably wait for a Blu-ray release, the only sales lost would be people who were too impatient to wait for the Blu-ray release, buy the DVD and not care enough for the film to re-purchase it on Blu-ray... which wouldn't be a sale anyway should Paramount decide to announce it later.

Who ever said "Cloverfield" will be one of Paramount's first releases?

If Paramount wanted to be careful to not PO their HD customer base further, announcing a Blu-ray release of "Cloverfield" PRIOR to next Tuesday would certainly be a better way of going than to wait until AFTER.

They could, but then some people would say, "They just announced Transformers, etc... Cloverfield/Sweeney/Blood is probably around the corner. I'll leave this DVD on the shelf and wait".

I'm pretty sure most people would agree that Sweeney, Blood, and Cloverfield will be early Paramount Blu releases, along with the previously announced stuff that was pulled (Transformers, Blades Of Glory, Top Gun, Face/Off, etc.)

You're right, but the problem is they don't care.

With the amount of titles that are due for releasse from all film companies, i personally don't think any time will be a good time. Whenever they decide to make an announcement they may piss on the fire works of one title or another. They should have taken the time since January to come up with a plan and should've started reprodution of Blu ray- Just because they were under contract not to release didn't mean they couldn't produce titles.

As for the point of pissing off 100% of the HD market - they are certainly doing that now but keeping quiet.

That's what is killing everyone. Damn Paramount has said nothing! Give us a statement and throw in an Indiana Jones BD set for '09 while you're @ it!

Did anyone else notice on the Amazon website if you search "Universal" under DVDs that it has a ton of DVDs being re-released on June 1st? Is it possible that they may be using the same DVD re-release/Blu release strategy as Warner? The date would be a little aggressive with no Blu's having been announced as of yet for it, but a fun thought nonetheless. The majority, if not all of the DVDs listed already have HD DVD releases as well. If I recall correctly, I remember Bill Hunt saying something along the lines of the Blu-ray releases by Universal basically being ports of the HD DVD releases (with a few minor fixes here and there).

I apologize if information is inaccurate or something to this nature has already been posted, but my search attempts yielded no results.

The way I see it, Universal knows they annoyed a lot of BD fans and prolonged a stupid format war. They want to get on BD users good side with great releases, so they are recoding everything so it is better than their HD DVD releases.
Paramount, on the other hand, knows they have downright pissed off the ENTIRE HD community! So their next move better be flawless or they will be in even deeper $h!+ than before. They have to make movies that are better than the HD DVD counterparts AND better than their original BD releases too. They are also looking to add as much interactivity as possible and other extras so they can make it up to us Blu fans for stabbing us in the back!
No, I'm not bitter...

Mosaic which is the company that takes care of the dvd section for BB told our media dept last week that the blu-ray planogram was to increase by two section in the following weeks.

No mention was made of titles or company but that does make one wonder.
