With the way you guys are spending your money, shouldn't we be coming out of this recession anytime soon?

There certainly is some serious upgrading going on, and I suspect next year's poll will see a rise in the upper end categories!

Spend away!

John,

Unfortunately for me, unless things change from what is intended, it will have been a very very expensive 3 successive years of additions and upgrades to my system.

Hi Rich!

Perhaps, but I'm sure it's been well worth it in the end! You now have something that will be with you for potentially the rest of your life. Not many of us can truly say that!

It is the mother of all subwoofer boxes. I don't have all the necessary tools to do all the cutting. In addition, you need different clamps to hold the pieces together. I figured it will cost me as much to buy the tools in addition to many hours of labor. Designing and building a subwoofer box is not a random thing and depends on many factors, including the Thiele-Small parameters of the driver, port tuning, the enclosure size, and the amplifier. Once I get the box, I will build the subwoofer.

It will be used with a 15" Titanic MKIII driver and an external Carver amplifier. The Carver amplifier is rated 1,000 watts bridged (mono) into 8 Ohm load. The driver is 4 Ohms. I figure the amp should output around 1,500 watts into 4 Ohm. This is the same amplifier that Bob Carver build to sound like Conrad Johnson amp and challenged the Stereophile magazine with it. He feels that he won the challenge and the case ended up in courts.

It is a big and monsterous box. It will be painted and heavily braced.

Dimensions:
28" Deep
20" Wide
25" Tall

Port Tuning: 20Hz.

Internal Bracing:

Frequency Response:

WoW! Simply WoW! Did you come up with the design or was this a joint project? Sounds like quite the project!

It was combination of discussions between me and Brett Bell of ED. We have been sending emails back and forth for the last three weeks. Of course, all the design and labor was done by them with my approval. I will be responsible for building the subwoofer and dealing with the wrath of Mrs. Big Daddy. Does anybody know any romantic comedies with good bass sound? I need to soften her up.

I've been able to listen to the Wadia i170 iPod transport, and I really like what I'm hearing. I compared the lossless version of a song to the actual cd, and while it wasn't as good as the cd player, it was really close. I foresee lots of use out of this setup.

How did you hook up the i170 to your amp? You have to use an external DAC (rather than the L & R line outputs) to get the most out of it. If you're currently using the L & R line outputs, you're still using the iPod's crappy internal DAC.

The dealer told me that the wadia has a DAC in it, but I'm looking at the website and don't see any mention of one. As it is right now, it's analog out to my P3.

Your dealer misinformed you; the i170 has no internal DAC (or in Wadia-speak, no internal decoding computer). The way you're currently using your i170, it's giving you no advantage over any other random iPod dock. If your P3 has built in DACs, connect your i170 to it using one of the former's digital outputs. That way, you'll be getting the full benefit of your i170.

Thanks. I'll just run it through my receiver so that I can get the benefit of the Wadia at least. And after further listening, I was able to clearly hear the differences between the cd player and wadia. Now I get to do it again, only this time with the wadia, receiver, and rotel amp vs ps3, receiver, and rotel amp.
