FYI...the cheaper/more compact version of the set just updated to Nov. 5 as well. It doesn't show the change on per-order yet...but that should happen in the next day or so.

Yes, I noticed. I just changed my preorder for that one instead. It will fit better into my shelves no doubt.

I've been thinking about switching to the smaller box too. I'm not that worried about all the stuff in the bigger box, I kept that order as it was only a few quid more than the smaller one.

In fact, I think I will cancel my large box order and just wait for reviews, and maybe even a price drop. I am not worried if I miss out on the larger box, the small one will do fine, and maybe I will get it at a much cheaper price at some point.

Well, the smaller box is only £69.95 at zavvi so you can already save yourself £30

Well I never order from zavvi, terrible company, but thanks anyway - I will still wait for reviews and maybe down the line the limited edition will still be available for cheaper than £70. If not, no dramas...

I will wait for reviews of the set once its released so I know if they fixed it or not before ordering anything. If I do get then it will be the smaller set I think, as much as I want the big one I cant see where I could keep it.

The new issue of Empire features a review of the set and there's also a full page ad stating the date 1/10/12.

I do wonder if they've really reviewed it. It was the same last year with the Star Wars boxset, you just get the idea they're "guessing" the review.

Like many major publications, All Empire and Total Film seem to do is review the films. I don't think they ever mention picture and sound quality. Completely pointless.

That's what makes me wonder if they've really seen the Blu-rays and not just re-reviewing the films and mentioning that they're now in HD.

I'm sure they get review copies otherwise why review them at all and the studios know that Empire has a very big readership (around 200,000) so they would also want to ensure they get review copies to them. It's just that such mainstream magazines have no interest in doing a technical appraisal of video discs and presumably their market research will have established that their readership demographic wouldn't be interested in such details.

They do mention picture-quality now and again but when they don't mention all the cock-ups or controversies with certain releases you know they haven't been within a hundred yards of the set.

I know studios often invite reviewers around for press junkets where they'll see bits of the films and some special features. Their reviews aren't exactly in-depth, which is a shame as they don't live and die on exclusives (or 1st reviews) like dedicated magazines do!

Although they did mention to their credit that it was a piss-take to have retailer exclusive bonus features with the Avengers Assemble. They didn't mention the cut though!

I remember Michael Brooke mentioning once that an Empire review commented on a piece he'd written for a BFI DVD's booklet... before he'd actually written the piece. I know that's a booklet rather than something on-disc, but I think the principle applies just the same. A magazine like Empire is concerned with the film, not the specific edition, and that is where the focus of their reviews always lies -- which for most of their readership is probably just fine. It's probably taking a gamble that there'll be no glaring errors with a disc/set, which most of the time pans out because most of the time there aren't any.

This is true, I've seen them talk of picture quality many times. Back at the release of the Psycho blu-ray, they said something about the transfer being 'sharper than Mother's blade'. And they spoke very highly of the Marilyn Monroe boxset in terms of the transfers.

I'm not saying that all movies will be steller but a month is enough time to fix up some of the more horrible flaws. I hope they do because I have the big set ordered. Although I think that should be enough time we here in America just had a problem with a disc and they postponed by a couple of weeks and fixed some of the color issues. So here is hoping the can get done what they need to. A set I am anxiously waiting for.
