It will be interesting to see how this does, neither of leads set the box office ablaze. This will need something special to happen for it to hit 250 million worldwide.

Yes, Barbie is big, but she going to need real legs this time.

This movie isn't something I'm interested in, but I wonder if they went with an adventure or drama, or Entrepreneur aspect to the film instead of a comedy approach?

Was Barbie mostly about collecting items and furnishing for her home, vehicles and wardrobe? I imagine this film will cover all those things, but just add the comedy angle to it to give it more credibility. Versus a film that took the Barbie dolls more seriously.

The trailer where she talks about dying, I don't know if that was supposed to be funny since this is a comedy, but it fell flat in terms of humor IMO. I'm surprised they put that joke into the trailer as a showpiece joke to end the trailer with. No big deal though. Did others laugh at it, I don't know? I see the contrast in tone they were going for anyway compared to the cheerful viewpoints of the other characters.

Maybe this isn't a comedy only, but has other aspects to it.

From what I've seen so far, it seems as if Gerwig wants to emulate Robert Altman's Popeye. An auteur known for more subdue affair who goes all cartoony. But people hated the Popeye movie so I'm not sure if that's the model to work towards.

I like that it looks like an existential comedy akin to The Lego Movie, rather than another "the guys who made the thing" biopic, which we've had numerous already this year alone (Tetris, Blackberry, Air, etc).

Popeye, I haven't seen that one in years since seeing it in the theater as a kid. I should rewatch it. It was on TV a couple times but I missed most of it. Yes, that movie didn't do well in theaters. It could work as a made for TV movie I guess, but probably not the best idea for a mainstream movie hoping to earn big profits.

Not sure how this film will do. Is it appealing to the core fanbase, I don't know? Fans will have to show up in theaters for it to have a good chance at a sequel.

That's true how the Lego movie didn't take itself seriously and poked fun at itself most times, while also developing a main story for the characters. That first Lego film did well in theaters with main audiences. And the Lego Batman film.

I’m getting Brady Bunch Movie + LEGO Movie vibes with the promotional marketing.

To me, that sounds awesome.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie production used so much pink paint to bring the fantasy world to life that it actually led to a shortage of the color.

In a recent interview with Architectural Digest, published online Tuesday, the director opened up about how Barbie Land took form and who helped pull off the iconic pink set design in the highly-anticipated movie.

“Maintaining the ‘kid-ness’ was paramount,” she said of the film, starring Margot Robbie as Mattel’s iconic fashion doll and Ryan Gosling as Ken. “I wanted the pinks to be very bright, and everything to be almost too much.”

Gerwig also noted that it was important to not “forget what made me love Barbie when I was a little girl.” So that’s when she decided to put production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer up for the challenge.

Greenwood told the magazine that to help “make Barbie real through this unreal world,” they took inspiration from Palm Springs’ midcentury modernism.

The production designer previously told IndieWire that “pink became the film’s thesis,” and that when it came to finding the perfect pink, “it was epic dealing with the painters, mixing the right colors.”

But due to construction, Greenwood told AD that there ended up being an international shortage of the fluorescent shade of Rosco paint. She added, “The world … ran out of pink.”

Overall, Gerwig said her goal was “to capture what was so ridiculously fun about the Dreamhouses” in the film, which is set to hit theaters on July 21.

Trailer doesn't look great, but neither does it look bad, just about alright, IMO. I hoped for better. :/

Looks like Barbie and Ken in their 40's or something.

Amy Schumer Dropped Out of ‘Barbie’ Because Original Script Wasn’t ‘Feminist and Cool’ Enough: ‘There’s a New Team Behind It’ Now

Quote:
Long before Margot Robbie boarded the “Barbie” movie and got Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach to write the screenplay, it was Amy Schumer who was set to headline the project. Back in 2016, Sony Pictures had the rights to “Barbie” and cast Schumer to star in a movie based on an original idea and screenplay by Hilary Winston. Schumer and her sister, Kim Caramele, planned rewrites, but the comedian exited the movie less than a year later.

“Sadly, I’m no longer able to commit to Barbie due to scheduling conflicts,” the actor said in a statement to Variety at the time. “The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”

This movie is bound to flop. Overprivileged white women are the only ones who can really tell us what is feminist and cool.

I mean, if you read the article it's just a marketing puff piece. She's just really excited to see the new movie, that's pretty much it.

Barbie - Rated PG-13 for suggestive references and brief language.
