The 3D master came from Fox/Lightstorm. That was the original intention. Unlike the international versions of the BD release, the US release was a non 3D/2D Combo Disc, and the separate 2D HD master on the other disc.

As I noted… Fox tried to get Paramount to used one of the layers for their 2D disc, but there were too many artifacts due to the manipulation of both layers to have a proper 2D release. When this was brought up to Lightstorm and Paramount they did a proper 2D 2.35 HD master, which was included on the US release.

I watched both versions too many times during QC of the disc, the open matte versions were not “slightly cropped” and looked pretty bad compared to the proper 2.35 2D disc. (Not that the effects hold up very well, anyways)

I think Disney should just put the open-matte version to Disney+. It could be like some of the Marvel movies that have option for IMAX.

They’re not a straight 1.78 crop, Cameron’s been finishing his CG out to 2:1-ish since T2

Thanks for this example. I've seen the open-matte version quite a lot and I think I would have noticed when the scenes changed from a perfectly vertically expanded 1.78 AR to a cropped 2.35 AR to fit into the 16:9 container. It just would have been too obvious. The truth is of course they are both cropped and expanded.

Yep, exactly, it was a 20th Century Fox film that Paramount joined midway through production. They (wisely) capped their investment in exchange for US distribution rights. Fox retained the movie throughout the rest of the world.

The two studios share the copyright on it, but the film remains functionally a Fox movie. They hold the elements for it, as far as I know, and they sold all the props through J. Peterman as the movie came out. I bought a lifejacket.

Interesting, so are you saying the international Fox BDs have both the 2D and 3D versions on one disc, and that the 2D version is an inferior presentation as a result?

I have the US Paramount edition, which has separate discs for the 2D and 3D versions.

When I look in the database, it looks like France and the UK got entirely separate standalone releases in both 2D and 3D from Fox.

Sorry, I'm just slightly confused about what the format was for the overseas Fox editions.

I have both the US and UK discs and they are completely the same except the US disc is region locked and the UK disc is region free.

Nope, 2D is 2D and 3D is 3D, if that makes sense.

Won’t this likely be scrubbed like T2 because of its 3D release? I’m just glad The Abyss was never converted. It would’ve been a great theatrical experience though.

Not holding my breath at this point. I don’t think it will look as bad as T2. Fingers crossed that we get an acceptable transfer with limited drama.

fitprod said the overseas Fox discs were 2D/3D combo discs though, wouldn't that mean they're like the Arrow Hugo BD, with both formats on a single disc?

Ah, good point, the US set has:

Disc 1: 3D version Part 1
Disc 2: 3D version Part 2
Disc 3: 2D version
Disc 4: bonus features

Can anyone confirm how the movie is divided up on the UK discs?

I've got the French Fox 3D steelbook. It's 2 discs for 3D discs and 1 disc for the 2D blu ray feature film

So it's the same as the US Paramount set, and there's no 2D/3D combo disc.

I'm still a bit confused by fitprod's description.

I know the Amazon page has been taken down, but the title has now been changed internally to: "Titanic 2023 Collectors Edition [4K UHD]"

You're not the only one confused by things he's saying, lol

Just to confirm: the UK Fox release has the 2.35 2D version on one disc, 1.78 3D version spread over two discs, plus a 4th bonus disc. And yes, the 2D version is the actual 2D version, not one of the 3D 'eyes'.

That’s interesting. Usually Disney labels all their UHDs as CE- most notably the recent Avatar releases which = a joke as they were called it the “Ultimate Collector’s Edition” which only contained the theatrical cut, and no legacy bonus features.

This, of course, will be distributed by Paramount. Perhaps we’ll be getting a tat edition?
