I see nothing ambiguous about the ending at all. The secret/clue/whatever was clear in the whole "but the auto-pilot was fixed" bit - else there's no reason for it to be in the film. As GenPion said, "Warner Bros would ... have never allowed for a directly apparent ending to the trilogy with Batman/Bruce Wayne dying" (my emphasis). But, if "ambiguous" or "open-ended" works better for you, that's cool - it's not correct, but it's cool.

Yeah, there's no mystery in the ending. Maybe if the line about the auto-pilot being fixed wasn't there you could say it was Alfred dreaming, but the line IS there.
The only thing left ambiguous IMO is whether Alfred eventually walks over and sits down, which I like to think he would, because that's how a normal human being would behave. |

I love how Bruce Wayne used his real name when fixing the autopilot in The Bat. "Hey Lucious, what the hell does Bruce Wayne have to do with fixing Batman's arsenal?"
I wonder if Prince Harry faked his death if he could go hang out at the mall without being noticed? |

Here's how the dark knight rises ending plays out:
Chris Nolan: hey WB, can we kill Bruce Wayne? WB: No. Chris Nolan: well I'm going to write something where the audience thinks he dies and then he doesn't. WB: great. I like our compromising meetings mr. Nolan. |

Yeah, 'The Bat' wasn't it's technical designation, so Wayne could've worked on it in whatever capacity without drawing attention to his alter ego. And even if someone at Wayne Enterprises recognised it out on the street while Bats was piloting it, we'd get the scene with Lucius and that wannabe-blackmailer employee from TDK all over again.

The ending definitely actually happened and wasn't a dream. If The Dark Knight Rises came out before Inception came out, no one would have been saying this "the ending was a dream" stuff for two years.
And why would Alfred imagine Bruce with Selina? Like Alfred would fantasize about Bruce with a lady, and say "You know who would be great for Bruce? That woman I met one time who robbed us." ![]() |
