Che (blu) (Criterion)
PQ: 4.5 stars (out of 5) AQ: 4.5 stars (out of 5) Film: 3 1/2 stars (out of 4) For all those that think this is a propaganda piece: you're idiots, plain and simple. Ernesto Guevara is undoubtedly one of the most controversial figures not only of the 20th century, but of all-time. To make a completely objective piece about him is impossible, but Soderbergh does a good job. Che is never portrayed as completely positive or completely negative; rather, he is shown to be a flawed but willful individual. There is no question he's a very important and influential figure even to this day, although most ppl know very little about him at all. And for those in the Che thread that are wasting their brain cells debating the historical aspects of this film, get over it. If you want to learn about a topic, read several books on the topic, look for trends, and synthesize. Don't go on wikipedia. Don't go on the internet. Don't take into account anything related to the entertainment industry. Del Toro did a fine job in his role as Che, although I don't think he was snubbed for the Oscar. Come on though, we all knew this film wouldn't come anywhere close to garnering an Oscar nom for any category, not with its controversial figure. The most deserving of all categories that it could have garnered a nom for is director. Soderbergh proves once again why he's one of the finest modern American directors: he has great range and has made quality films in multiple genres, just as Kubrick did (not that he's on that level, of course). Instead of being flashy (cough Reitman cough), he has a very organic way of shooting, in which he avoids trying to take the spotlight. The black and white NYC and UN shots of the first film are very effective. The crawling of Che near the end is incredible, with the army coming up behind him. The scene of Che dying is extremely well-done, with the camera taking Che's point of view. Although there are certainly narrative problems, this is not a traditional biopic and for those looking for one will be disappointed. This is a different type of film, and while it doesn't approach the greatness of Soderbergh's Traffic (one of the best films of the 2000s and one that is amusingly forgotten on this site), it's still a film very much worth seeing. “Hamburger Hill” saved on my SkyBox.
This film has all the elements of an essential Vietnam war film: explosive battles, grimy bars and brothels, crazy cursing soldiers, a war of ideology, etc. I felt the film was too average; despite the rough and gritty look of most scenes, the story was not very well-developed, and the characters were just okay. Didn’t really grab my interest that well, and I believe “Platoon,” "Full Metal Jacket," and “Apocalypse Now!” are the better Vietnam films. 3.5/5 (entertainment: 3.5/5, story: 3/5, film: 3.5/5) “Bleach: Memories of Nobody” on DVD. Having just trudged through the entire volume 4 sets of the “Bleach” series, I found myself getting a little bored with it. I think the show’s starting to get dull and uninspired at this point. In spite of this, I wasn’t expecting much out of the film version. In spite of that, my expectations were exceeded brilliantly. The story seems better and more interesting all over again. Characters are pretty well-developed. The fights and battles are thrilling, as always. And the production quality is a grade better than the series is. All in all, a very entertaining film for “Bleach” fans. 4/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 4/5, film: 4./5) Next greatest rental: “Ghost Story.” It seemed a little convoluted at first, but gradually it came together very well. It is a great story filled with decent characters. Writing seems a little odd in a way (some lines are a bit silly, and some lines feel a little overly-sophisticated to me), but the acting is awesome (Alice Krige [Show spoiler] ). Photography is decent; some of the imagery is great. It’s a decent film overall; wouldn’t call it scary, but it’s a darn good story.4/5 (entertainment: 3.5/5, story: 5/5, film: 4/5) Last edited by Al_The_Strange; 08-01-2010 at 08:38 PM. Brooklyns Finest- I did enjoy this movie so i give it 3/5, just have enough action and drama to unfold at the end of the movie. Felt sorry for what happened to Ethan Hawk, Don Cheadle character at the end. |

The Hangover
I used to think that this was going to be my comedy of 2009, the one I watch over and over again and be in hysterics, and while it's still the best comedy of 2009, it isn't the one I'll be scrambling to watch in need of hilarity. In all fairness it is a very funny movie, that's good for a one time watch, or with a bunch of friends, but on your own, it's not all that great. What does lift it beyond any other comedy though, is it has a really great storyline, I watched this with my dad (he laughed quite a bit but said it was OK) he said just before I was going to put it on that he would go to bed soon, he was hooked and watched all the way till the end. A huge problem I found watching it this time is that every time they are going to reveal a plot point and answer a question, they would refer to it just to re-jog you're memory is a pointless conversation. For example, They're just about to see Mike Tyson (completly pointless cameo by the way) about the tiger for the first time, and they have to say "oh wait, we still got a tiger in there" or another example is where you going to find out about the missing tooth and one of the characters have to say "is he missing a tooth?". In all honesty they shouldn't have to do that, and it just wastes time as it feels like they are treating there audience like children. I still enjoyed it a lot watching it again and it did cheer me up a bit after the death of my pet, so it does what it has too. 9/10 PQ-For a comedy, really good, 9.5/10 AQ-Meh, for a comedy, average 7/10 Overall 8.5/10 |

Natural Born Killers
At first i didnt think i could get into this film but after sitting down and showing a little patients i began to get a little interested in the film. First off this is a different bag of bones, never viewed a movie like it and i dont think the average viewer would enjoy it. But i do understand and feel where this film is coming from. Descent storyline and a wicked display of cinematography and of course the acting was on par. Once again very differnt but i do respect the ideal, probably wont view it again anytime soon but i will keep it in my collection. RENT FIRST 3.5/5 |

haha it's not that. It's that the words "epic" and "masterpiece" are thrown around wayyyy too much on this site. It's like any other word--if you use it too much and too freely, it loses meaning. Those two words have great meaning when it comes to film history and they're used much too often to describe a film on this site, to the point that their importance as a descriptive word is lessened. This isn't mere semantics or me agreeing or disagreeing with a particular film being described as "epic" or a "masterpiece," although that is the case more often than not as well. It's the loose using of the terms.
