with so many plots and characters being omitted from the show a lot can and will be different in the books.
Some things will be a little different, but the general ending will be the same.

Based on leaked information and set pictures we are very much in uncharted territory this season.

[Show spoiler] Pics are out of Jorah and Tyrion with Danny In the Pitn And there's leaked info about a scene involving the Night's King and his army.

I think people see that happening with The Walking Dead and maybe believe it's going to happen here. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if it did happen, since this show and the books are so popular.

I don't for a second think any show will be delayed especially given the immense popularity. It doesn't make any sense to stop the show for reasons like the books aren't finished. Unless there are budget issues or other creative problems these seasons will power on.

That's my take.

Also has there been any talk on how many more seasons after six will the show go on? I can't imagine it going past season 8.

Well everybody's entitled to believe what they want, but it's obvious by now that David & Dan are going full steam ahead.

Anybody who thinks the show won't move ahead of the books should be prepared for a rude awakening.

They could always do a flashback season or a "prequel" season...

I don’t see it being delayed at all….esp. w/Martin being involved……isn’t he an exec. producer??

and secondly, you don't hold production on one of the most popular shows out right now!!

part of me thinks the show runners knew they would catch up to Martin and that was a contributing factor in involving him.....other than him being the creator of the series that is.

That's just fine with me since I think HBO can do a better job with the events of books 4 and 5 than Martin did. But HBO has had significant delays between seasons depending on the show. There was nearly two years in between the premieres of season 5 and season 6 of the Sopranos. So while it would be unfortunate, it wouldn't be completely out of the question for them to delay for a few months if Martin isn't finished with book 6.

And consider this….there were 3 years between books 1 & 2, 1 year between books 2 & 3, 5 years between books 3 & 4, and 6 years between books 4 & 5.

It’s coming up on 4 years since book 5……no way in hell will HBO be willing to wait for the last books to be finished.

Honestly, I'm shocked we're even still having this conversation. I would've thought that the reality would've sunk in by now. But I guess that won't come until the show actually passes the books by, which should either be at the end of the season (probably) or starting next year.

I expect we won't see book 7 until 2020 at the earliest, and that might not even be the last book for all we know.

The book readers knew everything that was going to happen in the shows, but the people that only watch the show will know how the story ends the same time the book readers do.

A funny bit of karma there.
You're saying he'd rather have the series end on television first before releasing the books? That kind of ruins the point of reading the books and spoils the ending.

The books have to finish FIRST before the TV series does.

EDIT: And even if they do catch up next season, I am sure HBO will figure a way of stalling the story by adventuring into original story lines that were never part of his novels.

Is it confirmed that books 4 & 5 are only going to take up 1 season?? Or are we going to get a season and a half out of them??

I know Bran & Hordor aren’t in Season 5….. though I seem to remember more to their story than where last season left off…..albeit not much.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we get book 6 by next spring. But who knows, he may have written so much that he splits this book into 2 again.

I’ve already given you a break down of the publishing history of the books…..Martin is taking longer and longer w/each book.

I’m 32 right now…..i’m hoping I reach 50……b/c I honestly think that’s how old I’ll be by the time he’s done w/the books.

Martin is 66 or 68 right now…..at the rate he’s been writing……it’s a very real possibility he may die before he’s done.

Could you imagine that?? Having read about these characters and experienced all of the torment they’ve each gone through…..and NOT get an ending to it all from the man that started it??

i would hate to read a book put together based off his notes or what he's told the HBO people.

No it doesnt. As D&D have said. The tv show will reach the same conclusion but the journey and path wont be identical to the books. There will be a ton the show wont cover or do the same as the books. And with whats known about this season its clear that D&D are striking out on their very own path to get to whatever George's conclusion is.

Sorry folks but the show isnt halting or delaying or anything else. It will finish in 2017 regardless of the situation with the books. D&D have said more than once now that 7 seasons is what they want to do. Theyve also commented about the fact that the child actors arent getting any younger and that this cant go on forever. HBO didnt just buy this property. They bought D&D's pitch and they pitched a show without delay. HBO isnt going to replace D&D and D&D arent delaying so I dont know what to tell you guys other than the reality of the situation. The show will finish before the books. I came to terms with that when the Night's King walked onto screen and when 2015 arrived without a release date for WOW.

Yeah, I fear that too. I'd hate for that to happen. I read a post somewhere on tumblr that said, "what if Martin dies purposelessly to show us how unfair the world really is?"

But it'll be like Warner Bros. releasing Deathly Hallows in theaters before the book was officially out in stores. And yeah, that Night's King scene was total spoiler material for WOW. We'll see where we're at by 2016.

Well, while there are going to be differences, I think the tracks are going to be more similar than you say here. It's not like they only have the end. Martin has given them is outlines for how the rest of the story goes. So while I expect that the details will differ, I don't necessarily expect of the general storylines to be all that much different.

i see them changing a few things here and there like they did w/Dany's storyline in Season 2.

they started and ended where the books did w/her story, they just took a different path to get there......at least that's what i remember from the book vs. watching the show.....correct me if i'm wrong.

the main things will stay the same.

Characters that die in the book will die in the show and their deaths will happen the same way.

Battles will also be the same.

The smaller details are up for grabs though…..which I’m fine with. So long as the main parts of the story are the same as the books, I can make my peace w/that.

Season 5 will surpass the books with some characters for sure, and I believe D&D have stated that they want this show to run 7 seasons.

I hope we finally get some confirmation on whether the Hound is alive or dead in Season 5. We need more Hound and there is always a chance Sansa might run into him.

I'm pretty sure the Hound is
[Show spoiler] good as dead. Arya left him to die there and has been long forgotten in the books as far as I know.
Would be a neat surprise to see him show up again though. But I'm not counting on that to happen
