Does the 40gb model actually play any PS2 or PS1 games? I thought there was no backwards compatability? The 60gb has the full PS2 processing capability, that's one reason I bought it, so I could buy used PS2 games for low prices and play all the PS2 games I had. I originally bought the 80gb, but only about 9 of my 16 ps2 games played on it.

The 40GB can't play PS2 discs AT ALL. The 80GB plays about 90% while the 60GB plays about 95-97% of PS2 games. ALL PS3s PLAY PS1 GAMES.

They must have improved the 80gb backwards compatability near the end of the 80gb model's shelf life. In February, I bought the 80gb model and out of 16 PS2 games I owned, only 9 were compatable. I also bought 5 more and only 3 of the 5 played. That's alot less than 90%, which is why I searched and found a brand new 60gb model at Sears. Now every single PS2 game I own or have purchased plays perfectly. I wanted to be able to buy the PS2 games because I just can't afford alot of 60.00 games, hehe.

If you ask me, all PS3's should have been 100% backwards compatable at least with the PS2 games. I think this was a big mistake. The blu-ray plays previous format (DVD) and I think people would have appreciated being able to play all of their PS2 collection on their new PS3's. Yah I know, it cost more money for the processing, but one of the big features of the PS2 was you could play PS1 games. Just personally think it was an attractive way to get PS2 owners into buying a PS3. Alot of people don't have enough inputs to be running a ton of machines and don't get into switching chords.

I totally agreed with you there! After all, I believe in having just ONE console for everything. Some argue why not buy a "cheap" 40Gb while keeping the PS2? I'd say why do that? The PS2 would eventually break down, and what then? That is the reason why I got the 60Gb in the first place.

I have a PS3 question. I have alot of PS2 and PS3 games (have the 60gb model), and have alot of games saved on the PS3 hard drive (not the games themselves but the save files). I am not sure how to back those files up should I lose the hard drive on the ps3 for some reason, all the progress of all my games will be gone. I am not the type of gamer that plays a game for a week or a full day until I am done with the entire game. I have about 30 ongoing games that once in a while I stick one in and go a bit further, I just like it that way.

How do I make backups of those files? I pretty much have used my PS3 for blu-ray playing and just popping games in and then doing the save on the game on the PS3 hard drive, have never really worked with files on the machine. The manual is not very explanatory in this respect so suggestions would be appreciated.

Use a USB flash drive and choose "copy" when you highlight the saved folder.

You have to be careful though because the software DTS-MA decoding program can corrupt your saved files

(the last part was a joke)

So do you do that with each individual game save? Can they all go on the same flash drive? When you select "copy" does it give you the option to save it to that drive if its plugged in?

Yes, yes and yes.

It's a pain if you have a lot of saved games doing them individually. I wish it gave the option to save the entire folder.

Some game saves have copy-protection I believe. The backup utility is the only way to get them all AFAIK.

Yup. Full will stretch the image full-screen and double... apparently doubles the resolution? All I know is I end up with a window-boxed picture. Just use normal.

This may be a stupid question, but I am moving to a new apartment on Thursday and I was wondering if I can still watch BR and play games even without having an internet connection for a few days??

Seriously?

You can watch & play just fine without an internet connection. The PS3 may warn you it can't connect to the PS Network and that's just about it. Anything you've downloaded will still play too.

I knew it was a stupid question, but it probably isn't the stupidest question I have ever asked.

There are no stupid questions, just stupid people. - Mr. Garrison, South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut

Don't worry about it. For me it's weird when I have no internet available. I feel incomplete somehow.

There used to be FUD before BD launched from the HD DVD folk that BD would *require* an internet connection. Ironically, those same red ants are now claiming that the lack of mandatory internet connection is holding the format back ("unfinished spec"..."all HD DVD players had ethernet ports"...etc).
