Once again it's that whole, "it's so uber cool to be dark and gritty and super serious!!11!1!".

So now Marvel won't ever go that route. Because of the backlash on dark and gritty, they have to throw in a bunch of one liners, and call it good.

Interestingly Magneto and the Joker are some of the few supervillains done right - and also pursue a dark edge too. A murderous Holocaust survivor and the criminally insane villain of the Nolan trilogy. Loki is portrayed pretty good too, but not quite as dark.

Hello, Deadpool.

IMO I think it's a balance. Finding a way to entertain both kids and adults without going to ULTIMATE HEAD-CRUSHING PROFANITY DESTRUCTION; HERE'S A SEX SCENE but also without going to LOOK AT ALL THESE BRIGHT COLOURS, THROWAWAY PLOTLINES AND YAY EVERYONE'S HAPPY

Which I think Days of Future Past and Winter Soldier succeeded rather well at.

Eh, possibly. These movies should be enjoyed by Most age groups but it's getting annoying when people are saying they're childish and stupid. Goes back to me saying for the umpteenth f***ing time, then don't watch them...

Could not agree more hellraiser. This COD grey brown generation always conflating gritty/colorless/lifeless/depressing with good and unable to accept that something that is fun can also be good. If someone doesn't enjoy a certain aesthetic or tone then they should probably avoid it rather than try to force it to go away. its the whole if its not my opinion then it must be destroyed, instead of well its not my opinion but others seem to like it so good for them.

Yeah, Trank will be back, set back of course, but he'll likely work on a smaller film or do some TV before we'll see a major release from him, likely he'll re-invent himself.

I sure hope your right. So far he looks to be a director that will never really appeal to me personally (I didn't care for chronicle at all and this movie will probably not really be seen by me until its on TV someday) however from the sounds of things there are many who do like his previous work so who am i to stand in the way of them having future viewing experiences that they may enjoy from Trank.

I don't know. Another very public spat between director and studio over a Hollywood movie involved Tony Kaye and New Line over American History X and aside from a couple of low budget films over a decade later, he was pretty much done as a director.

Granted, Kaye went further than Trank by trying to have his name removed from the film and I think even threatening a lawsuit, but keep in mind that American History X is widely regarded as a terrific piece of cinematic work. You'd think that kind of reception would ensure a future in filmmaking for the dude, but he was essentially blacklisted.

I have no idea what Trank's future is in Hollywood, but odds are if he's gonna direct anything anytime soon, it's gonna have a very small budget.

I own all, if not most, of the Marvel movies and I enjoy them very much. My family and I always have a blast when we see them at the theater. However, I never mentioned that Marvel needs to make their movies darker in tone to be more enjoyable. My point was Marvel doesn't seem to put as much effort into their villains as compared to their super heroes. I know everyone likes to mention The Dark Knight and its darker theme, but I see it as Christopher Nolan put as much effort into The Joker as he did for Batman. I have never gotten that sense of balance in a Marvel movie.

Two questions about the Fantastic Four. How can the rights revert back to Marvel from Fox? Are the plans still in the works for Fantastic Four 2, or have they already been scrapped?

Fox said they haven't given up and still have plans. Plus the rights are a deal with Constantin Filmproduktion anyway.

Let's see what Fox says after we see bins in stores everywhere full of discounted copies of their Fantastic 4 movie.

Until then I don't trust a word they say.
