You have Netflix correct? You have a 4K device to stream it on correct? That should answer your question.

I streamed Goodfellas on Netflix over the weekend and the image was pristine. You could see every wrinkle of the actors faces, as well as other details you would see via Blu. And that wasn't even 4K !

I've been in enough ~2,000 square foot houses where people have way too much junk and then complain they don't have room for stuff. I'm very organized and I've never run out of space for my stuff and I haven't live in big places before.
Even if space is an issue for some people, there are options to reduce the space taken up.

Maybe transfer some movies to multi-disc cases or slim CD cases, and reycle/sell the original packaging. You can get those clim CD cases pretty cheap, and they would take up a fraction of the space.

While this isn't something that I personally would want to do because, while the content is important, I do enjoy nice packaging (even customizing it from time to time if the original packaging suck IMO), the way I see it, if some people's biggest reasons for shifting to digital is the space factor, and you are considering going with an option in which there is no packaging to speak of anyway, then this would seem like a good compromise.

What do you do about releases that are 4K only in streaming, aka no UHD disc version? Silence of the Lambs, The Conjuring/Annabelle. What about releases where the BD is DNR-crap, and the iTunes is from a better master, e.g. Top Gun?

Sure, only a handful of examples, but streaming has it's place in a videophile's library, IME.

Life is short... I really enjoy the 4K version of Silence of the Lambs. Yes, I have the Criterion BD, too

Good intent, but bad example. I regularly find Netflix streaming quality to be sub-par. The best example of streaming quality comes from Apple/iTunes, in my experience. They use their proprietary codec to encode the 4K masters they get from the studios, and the benefit is tangible.

Then you just cut off your nose, to spite your face. Take it from someone who buys Criterions, does ISF calibrations, has LG OLED, Pioneer Kuro, etc.

If you absolutely want "quality", you're missing out of the best possible versions if you stick with physical media 100% of the time.

I have plenty of films to keep me happy, I can always get hold of what I need as any titles not released here I can get from other region b countries. I buy tv shows on Blu-ray and I have Netflix and Sky TV what else do I need?

Not sure? If (for example) "Silence of the Lambs" was your all-time favorite film, you'd purposely not watch it on streaming, even if the quality was an upgrade over disc?

What do you say to the people that say "VR is terrible" even if they haven't tried it? Might you want to compare the best streaming vs. the best disc, in cases where the streaming has objectively/measurably better PQ?

I can't recall, do you have a 4K HDR TV or just the 3D set up? Meaning (if you don't have 4K tv) you've never sat at home and sampled or watched full 4K programming via Netflix or similar apps?

I have the Blu-ray. I want to own my content, not be at the mercy of the studios.

I have a 4K OLED tv. (Got it two weeks ago) and a regular 1080p projector I get my Oppo 4K player (hopefully) in Autumn of this year. I have indeed watched Netflix 4K. It’s very good. What is your point?

I have watched around 5 UHD discs at a friends including the absolutely stunning Planet Earth 2 documentary. It’s utterly stunning. I also saw the Revenant which looked stunning. I have fibre so bandwidth is not a problem.

I thought it was all about "quality"? Now, it's about being at the mercy of the studios? Different argument, me thinks.

You you still contend that a lower res Blu Ray disc looks better than 4K streaming?

It is about quality. Do you honestly think I’m going to drop my beloved format because if a couple of dud transfers. Not going to happen. When I fully upgrade to 4K, I will go disc.

Comparing Apples to Oranges. I still see artefacts in backgrounds so Blu-ray is much more solid. The colours pop, sure. But the 4K disc is leagues ahead so when I upgrade completely, I will choose whether to upgrade as appropriate

Assuming there are discs to upgrade to. Odds are by the time you think "it's time" to switch, it will be mostly 4K streaming.

But it was you that said/insinuated Blu was better than any "streaming" method wasn't it?

I pointed out earlier, streaming can co-exist with physical media. Best of both!

Wait a minute... you're not even doing 4K yet? C'mon on in, the water's fine. And just for good measure: "yes", 4K streaming is better than 1080p on disc
