I didn’t like the final season. My issues weren’t with how it ended, but how it felt like the final season was treated. It felt way too rushed. I describe it as feeling like the creators had senioritis. Instead of giving the show time, they rushed it so they could move on and get to something else. I heard an interview with Jane Espenson and she talked about Season 1 and the creators would just assign chapters to the writers. Then as the show went on and they seemed to try and exert more and more of their writing and when the books stopped the writing seemed to go downhill. That might just be me.

Dude, enough. This is for people who want the set, not to ignorantly b---h about the show.

FYI: they had to adapt a massive set of novels, knowing which storylines to condense and to make sense on television and on a TV budget (or do you miss long & flowery paragraphs about food being served?). To expertly cast actors who made their roles iconic. They wrote a lot of Season 5, all of 6 and 7 without guidance from Martin. Just because you didn't like the way it ended doesn't mean you can rewrite their contribution and history of the series. There's enough toxic fan talk on the internet as it is.

My only beef with the ending is the warm feeling scenes, tying up loose ends, and other non-GRRM-like things that the eventual books (should they ever come out) will probably not be exactly like.

My favorite friend comment on the show, for an episode of season 5 or 6, was "Okay, last nights episode was NOTHING like anything GRRM would have written".

HOWEVER, new viewers of the series that have no books under their belt are FREE to like the series.

And those of us (like me) that have invested in the book reading can also still like the series, even with those few wince-inducing, non-GRRM moments. Because at the end of the day, it was done and complete, and it's still enjoyable.

Short synopsis: it was still a quality show from start to finish, even if the last 2 seasons did change color quite a bit (for whatever reason).

Chris

Yeah the show immediately fell off a cliff when they moved past the books...

The show was good/fine until they had to start wrapping it up. People can bash D&D all they want but they adapted the show very well from season 1-6. It's not like GRRM was there for every single writing session to tell them, point for point, what to do... A lot of good decisions were made without GRRM's input. Unfortunately, when it came to ending the show, you can see definite shift starting with season 7, as they're attempting to finish certain arcs and storylines, while setting up for the final season. Sadly, the decision-making really wasn't as solid. Characters start to do very out-of-character things. Lots of plot armour. Too much fan service. Lots of illogical decision-making etc. etc.

Season 7 and 8 just aren't as consistently tight, as the previous seasons.

I think the most obvious example is
[Show spoiler]Arya getting stabbed several times but she's not dead because of soup.

But that's Season 6. I'd agree they went over the top with that scene, but it was obvious that that character wouldn't be dead. I think the critism probably has to fall on Mark Mylod more than anything, but would have to see the script to be sure.

If nothing else it's clear that once they lost the lifeline of the source material that D&D never really did have a strong understanding of the characters or the world and the final seasons suffered for it. I still praise them for how they adapted the existing books and I guess it's possible that the final season could have been even worse, so at this point I'm just trying to be happy with what we have. I still understand why some folks are bitter about how it ended, though, and it's certainly not fair to say they don't know what they're talking about. I think a lot of people who were the most disappointed are actually quite invested in the franchise.
I don’t get how criticizing certain people for constantly chiming in with their “well actually” posts for people who did like it and misinformation(“D&D deliberately killed the show!”) is “dismissing all criticism of the show”.

Martin has said in several interviews(even recent ones) that he wasn’t constantly in contact with them, even early in the show’s run.

Never before had they shown so many characters completely and utterly screwed, yet somehow survive multiple times. I get plot armour is a thing that's impossible to avoid but it reached new heights in season 7 and 8 and some of the instances were pretty illogical.

Fan service?
[Show spoiler]Like Cleganebowl? Like Gendry returning? Like Arya and Gendry getting it on?

The fight between the Clegane brothers has been anticipated since the very first season, and will certainly featue in the book too.

You can call every plot point fan service. There's been enough discussion around this series that nearly every concievable story has been mentioned prior to it occuring.

Arya & Gendry's interactions were totally in character.

Actually the fight between the Cleganes is considered by a lot of book readers regressive to Sandor's character growth. The only way they are going to fight is if Sandor protects someone (Sansa?) from him (which I doubt cause a lot has to happen for this to be plausible).
In addition, it needs to be considered that that creature is not actually Gregor Clegane, it's eventually a zombie created from some parts of Gregor's body and most likely doesn't have a head, so Sandor wouldn't really fight his own brother.
He might do that to give his brother peace, but that's not going to happen because of revenge or hate because Sandor is past that point.

The fight between Brienne and Sandor at the end of season 4 was definitely a fanservice. Wasn't in the book and doesn't really make any sense.

I agree that Arya and Gendry will meet again in the books, don't know if they will have sex though. It's not above Martin to write it.
