I'll be getting the UK steelbook tomorrow, will check those frames on JP3.

I was supposed to get it on July 9th so it's a nice surprise from Amazon, unless it arrives full of dents lol, but still has not dispatch for Dark City which am supposed to get Monday, getting worried now.

So I wanted to mention it in case others have spotted it.

Cleaned it and yep its still there. Occurs around 1 hour 16 minutes and 4 seconds.

Had a friend test his and yep same freaking thing.
I did. I was not blown away by the new 4k transfers. Yes, it is slightly better but eh. I would not have double dipped had I watched these new transfers 1st.

Gave JP a spin last night. This is definitely not the same master that was on iTunes several weeks back in HDR10 I looked at (I was never able to access the DV version). I do like the changes. The magenta is gone (or at least not really noticeable) and the color does inch a little warmer in some sequences with better saturation. Detail is a little better too with less DNR. I felt like I was maybe seeing hints of that some of that etchy noise against outlined objects if I looked for it. As far as the audio, never compared to the prior. But I found it pretty impressive with its dynamic range. The surrounds had a nice ambient, subtle use which seemed improved to what I recall with the prior disc where it felt too forced, but again I never compared. All in all, I think the disc is a worthwhile upgrade. I really have no real complaints about it any longer.

The DVD is said to have been too cool and this dust look seems to have been missing.

I would also say that, despite the different technology, it is quite possible to get roughly the look of the 35 mm prints in home video if the studios and restoration companies make an effort.

What do you think of Hook?
I've never seen a print that looked like that DVD. I never said there wasn't a difference in the color between the Blu-ray and UHD, just that it wasn't any more egregious than what I see when comparing two different prints of the same film. Of course, the same film print can look noticeably different on different projectors/in different theaters too.

Here's two different prints of Das Boot from LoC scanned by the same person:

[Show spoiler]

Compared to something like that, the differences between the Blu-ray and UHD of Raiders seem negligible with the HDR being the difference maker to me at least. I think the UHD is better overall but I've seen prints that resemble both and I wouldn't be surprised if the Blu-ray was used as the reference for the UHD (I'd be surprised if a reference wasn't used for the Blu-ray master itself though). I've not seen a single print that looks like the DVD.

Hook is not a favorite of mine, but I saw the UHD once and thought it looked fine.

I'll have to check later as I was more just annoyed that the disc would have such a glaring issue like this. When it was seemingly a much better encode.

What are the odds the new JP 4K gets a solo release? Especially since at least in the US it looks like the steelbook is gone.

EDIT: Okay the steelbook is back, but is almost $80. Would love just a solo release of the first film.

? That's just on Amazon and because it's a third party seller. Still seeing it for the prior "regular" retail of $60 at Walmart, Target, Gruv, Bullmoose, and Deep Discount.

But I don't disagree that it would be nice to have individual releases of these new versions available too.

Ok, good to know. It’s not in stock near me at either Target or Walmart and I’ve had issues with mailing before, so I prefer to get it in store for either of those options.

I already own the last 4K set and honestly don’t want to spend over $40 since I only really want the first film. I’d love to see an individual release. I’m being way pickier about rebuys these days. Of course, I say that, and I just bought Criterion Sorcerer when I already have the digibook.

My guess is that they tried to bring back that dust look for the Blu-ray Disc, but overdid it. similar to Jurassic Park 3D. In contrast to Jurassic Park, however, the studio then fine-tuned the color grading for the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc and did not simply adopt the old false grading. Paramount probably took a similar approach with Top Gun. With The Godfather, however, the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc is wrong and the Blu-ray Disc had the correct color grading.

With Raiders, the 35mm scan I saw most resembled the DVD in terms of color (vs BD and UHD). I have no idea of the basis for this as the 35mm scan looks too rough and faded for my liking, but it didn't have as much 'warmth' as the UHD let alone BD.

The Blu-ray of Raiders didn’t bother me too much (I got to see that remaster on an IMAX screen back in 2012 which was awesome). I thought the golden hue was a bit too heavy though, which also made red colors like the nazi flags look red-orange. The UHD dialed this back a bit and completely fixed the issue as far as I can tell.

I was very pleasantly surprised with Crystal Skull though. I never loved how digital it looked on Blu-ray. I can’t say how it looked in theaters in 2008, I can’t even remember if I would have seen a digital screening or if 35mm prints were still common at that time. But the Blu-ray in no way looked like it was shot on 35mm film, and the UHD brought that quality back and made the weird sometimes ethereal cinematography look a bit more natural.

Quite simply, the Hobbit films had a teal and orange grading. Even if the EE of FotR looks much less professional with the green snow.

You can see how Peter Jackson follows the color trends here. With the upscale Ultra HD masters, he then generally reduced the teal again.

That's not an answer to my question, so that theory is still just a theory based on, well, nothing.

The green tint, underexposed highlights, and severe black crush on Fellowship’s 2011 release was an error. Now back to Jurassic Park

For those with compression issues in JP3, are you watching in DV or just HDR10?

Also does anyone have proper screencaps comparing the new and old UHD for those frames?

I have some catching up to do in this thread, but to my eyes, faces seem less waxy in JP1 and the image is a little less harsh in general. I think it looks pretty decent through my projector - it could still be better but this is best I've seen it at home.

I didn't own The Lost World or JP3 before, so the steelbook was worth it.

Can confirm this. I also got the French Steelbook release. And there were no issues at the timecode mentioned by @accountsareapain, while watching in DV.
