Simply not true. Have you seen both discs?

Yes, a good portion are the same or close. But other sections, including the first 15 minutes, have made minor changes to the colors.

Not a complete departure, but also not exactly the same.

One of the things I was most interested in is the mention of a brand new Dolby Atmos mix done at Skywalker Sound. Everyone’s talking about the minimal differences in the image but I haven’t seen anyone comparing the DTS:X mix to the new Atmos mix yet. If the new Atmos mix is a big improvement, I could see making an upgrade for that (although the DTS:X mix wasn’t bad, I think I remember not being quite as wowed by it as I was hoping I might be). By the way, I’m mostly just talking about the first film here, I haven’t seen the 4K discs of the others.

They have quite a few pages back, don't remember exactly when so you'll have to dig. It's got some new sound effects and stuff in it. No deep dive yet though so that'd be cool if anybody gets around to it.

It's possible that it is taking a bit longer due to some downtime for the July 4th holiday. That being said, the one and only time (out of many purchases) that I returned something to Gruv for a replacement my tracking showed delivery for about a week with no further action. I reached out to them to ask about the status and miraculously the replacement shipped out that very day. If you have delivery confirmation and it's been more than a handful of days (excluding weekends and holidays) perhaps pinging them for an update might get things moving.

On my modest 5.1 setup I found the Atmos track to be good. It didn’t sound any worse than the DTS:X mix, and there was generally more activity in the rears.

There’s a moment when the raptor quickly withdraws its head after shoving it through some pots and pans in the kitchen, when it does it makes a ‘whoosh’ noise and I always liked the use of bass in the whoosh. It was perhaps fractionally reduced on the Atmos mix, but the difference was sufficiently minor that my ears could be playing tricks on me.

T-Rex stomping and roaring, and raptors eating the cow were as punchy as ever… again, on my mid-range KEF 5.1 setup with none of the extra Atmos speakers.

Both discs are given plenty of screen time in that video, and it is made by people who know what they are doing. Disregarding the colors, there are even shots and scenes in the movie that look the same on both discs, so this is not a full remaster of any sort. But that has already been discussed in the thread, so no need to go into that again.

And The Lost World looks worse on the new UHD, so basically a worthless release on all accounts.

So it is true...apart from some scenes in the first 15 minutes or so, as you said.

All I'm seeing here is people defending their purchases. Sure, go right ahead.

Yes. I decided against returning it, so now I have an expensive extra copy of Jurassic Park.

Excellent, so you’ll be able to observe the clear differences in colour and DNR for yourself.

And all you're doing is minimising the differences because you don't want to buy it (but have done so anyway). I'm not coming at this from "defending" it either as I wasn't particularly enamoured with it, minor upgrade is minor, but at the same time saying it's "exactly the same" is patently untrue.

I'm notoriously non-techy and not particularly observant in my 'film friends' circle (which consists of one person - me), but even I noticed the colours look different between the old disc and the new one.

My comment about defending ones purchase wasn't aimed at you at all. I enjoyed your review of the new disc.

I can see that there are some very minor improvements on the new UHD, but regarding the colors, they look the same to me, and I think they look great on both discs.

But this is a pretty expensive release to have, just for a very slightly sometimes improved picture on Jurassic Park. Especially when TLW and JP 3 shows no improvements - I haven't watched or compared these discs. I'm going with the impressions from others in here, and I believe you also wrote something about TLW not being especially impressive on the new UHD, when compared to the old one?

EDIT: Regarding the colors on JP. Is it because they look warmer on the new UHD? I have the colors on my TV set to warm and not neutral, because I like it that way. So on the old JP UHD, I already have slightly warmer colors.

I know it wasn't aimed at me, but I thought it worth clarifying as you were heading into full wind-up mode and it's really not worth all that bovver

The old disc has much warmer/pinkier tones and not just for the Badlands stuff, there's a slightly pinkier look to a lot of the stuff on the island, and greens are a shade duller on the old one. I've got both discs right here being A/B'd on calibrated (as in, factually calibrated to set standards, not eyeballed to 'how I like it') settings and the differences are there.

They are however very minor differences overall so yes: it is a minimal upgrade, for a first-time buyer then this is the one to get, but it's one not worth chasing IMO if someone's already happy with the existing UHD.

Yep. Worth checking out reset_9999 on YT - doing great things with HDR/DV analysis for releases. The color is different in some scenes on the new JP4k - it also seems to restore the 4000nit master (prev HDR10 was capped to 1000nits), so depending on folks’ TV capability and tone mapping, could explain a small uptick in a small # of scenes. Def not a big upgrade.

After seeing this version of JP, I do wonder what exactly was scanned in the first place. I know other films on 4K have scanned an IP and I wonder if that’s what was used here? I’m not sure I’m just pointlessly speculating.

In terms of the new DV release it’s largely fixing problems that the first release never should have had in the first place.

Universal claimed back in 2018 JP was scanned at 4K from the ON.
