Thought the
[Show spoiler]pacifism on the part of the aliens was an unexpected and interesting take. Doubt any humans would be willing to forgive attempted genocide. We kind of assume that aliens would be as inherently violent as we are.

Sweet this is put out by Lionsgate so that pretty much guarantees Dolby Atmos sound for the Blu-ray.

Being Lionsgate also makes it much less likely we'll see a 3D blu-ray in the US sadly.

Good luck using logic about this movie. I posted a similar article from Dark Horizons a few pages back. But the hive mind has decided that Valerian is an expensive flop that's going to lose a ton of money & bankrupt Europa...

If they really wanted me to see this they would play it in 3D more than once a day at 10:00 pm. Yep. That's what both Showcases near me are playing it at - 1 3D showing a day at 10:00 pm. Incredibly frustrating because we always go to the afternoon shows.

I often wonder if BOMojo, a site I love, is just 'stealing' their numbers on random internet pages. It's quite often that their budget numbers were 'off' when the actually budget is known of revealed afterwards.

Nope it's absolutely correct, Luc Besson himself even said this. I posted his comment in the 3D thread. I'll try to dig it up at post it here.

This was an amazing film. Definitely worth it in 3D if you can see it that way! Loved the film, acting and all around story. 5/5

Here is what Besson said

“Like every film company, we will only greenlight a project if at least 80% of its budget is covered. With ‘Valerian,’ we’ve covered 96% of the budget with pre-sales. The risk to EuropaCorp is 4% of the budget so there’s no actual financial risk. The risk for the company is more one of notoriety. If the film is a big flop, we’ll lose credibility for making these sorts of films. The risk is not financial, but rather human.”

The visuals, alien and production designs, were all top notch. It looked like every dollar and more was on screen.

Nono, didn't mean that, I know the part of the financing. I was talking about the actual budget. Besson himself stated what was in my quote. It's $ 15M less than what's on most sites, including BOMojo. According to the man himself, it's not $209M, it's actually $ 194M.

Oh sorry about that. Here's an interesting read on how the whole financial backing happened with equity partners. CEO of Europa said after tax credits they were sitting at $150M.
Even though this article is saying estimates of $180M-$200M

Yeah. Which is why people assuming how much money a movie needs to make to turn a profit makes no sense.

No sense at all, indeed. But I explained that in the Alien Covenant thread. Not going to repeat it once again. Bottom line : Those worldwide accepted rules like "Budget x 2,5 = Break even point" and the many variations of it, can not be applied most of the time. People have absolutely no idea how many systems (tricks, as I call it) there are to finance both budget and -above all- promotion, where the costs are often extremely overrated. And the many aspects beside that. All studios should share the actual numbers, but then of course, they can't really. Competition and all that. If that false rule really was the standard, at least 75% of the releases wouldn't have been profitable, tons of sequels that were green lighted wouldn't exist and at least half of the studios wouldn't have survived.

But ok, I'll just leave it there. Don't want to turn this in another box office discussion.

Wonderful review on Valerian posted today by Peter Sobczynski at Roger Ebert.com. He gave it 4/4 stars

Here's an excerpt from his review:

Quote:
Every summer movie season needs at least one out-of-left-field entry that is so cheerfully bonkers it stands as a living rebuke to an industry that churns out noisy and soulless garbage like “Transformers: The Last Knight.” This year, that film is “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,” a deliriously entertaining film that finds writer/director Luc Besson swinging for the fences in his efforts to make a weirdo sci-fi epic for the ages and coming up with a virtual home run derby. It's a film filled with humor, charm, excitement and so many memorable images that many viewers will find themselves struggling to keep from blinking so as not to miss any of the eye-popping delights crammed into each overstuffed frame.
