Jurassic Park is not magic realism. The one thing that separates the series from other science fiction action adventures is its grounded look. Even if dinosaurs have been brought back, the background is 100% real life. That's what helps elevate these films. The 1.85:1 aspect ratio also made it feel more real, focused and immediate rather than "epic" and "magical" which 2.39:1 conveys. I don't see any Gabriel Garcia Marquez influence on any Jurassic Park film till date.

Perfect! Now I'll definitely cancel my US pre-order and get this one instead!

Weirdly it looks like the UK will also get a standard Blu-ray '25th anniversary' boxset on April 23rd containing all 4 movies.

Which was exactly my point. Now imagine it with the blacks crushing down a shitload more shadow detail on top of that and you've got the UHD. Admittedly it does pull down a lot more highlight detail than any of the Blu-ray versions (though not in the VFX shots) so the image doesn't feel as gummed up as some other Universal HDR regrades I could mention. But even with that benefit the UHD takes a step back with iffy compression that makes a hash of the grain, looking very blocky and strange on several occasions, as well as appearing oddly noise-reduced in certain moments. Then there's the posterisation which is caused by the extreme black levels swallowing up the lower mid tones and wrecking the roll off into black, the searchlights on the tower look hideously bad on the UHD.

I have some faith that they'll get the JP's right because they're new transfers from the ground up, they won't be wedded to existing masters where Universal feel the need to crush the blacks in the HDR pass. That's what worries me a LOT about Gladiator, the blacks are already mightily dense - but beautifully so - on the remastered Blu-ray, so crushing them down further could result in the exact same shit I've described with A13.

What would compel them to do so (further crush the blacks)? An HDR pass suggests the opposite imperative.

Ask them. But they've done it repeatedly with their HDR passes.

I'm just grabbing the stand-alone UHD of JP1 so it doesn't impact me but just thought it strange Universal UK are excluding JW from the UHD boxset.

It's very strange, I mean it's not like they're not releasing JW on 4K at all, e.g. there's a regular case version as well as the steelbook: https://www.zoom.co.uk/product/juras...l_download_uhd

So why not put them all into a boxset if you're gonna bother doing one? If the boxset is, say, £50 and JW is £20 then that's not far off the steelbooks, so I might as well just get them for the collectable aspect.

Is there a standalone JP1 announced (apart from the Zoom exclusive steelbook I mean)?

Not that I seen.

Zoom has all 4 on steelbook, the trilogy boxset and JW UHD on its own.
Very strange. What are they doing.

I didn't even notice that they had the boxset on zoom, it doesn't appear under the pre-order page for 4K but there it is when I search for it. I was spot on with that £50 price, heh.

Could end up being £45 if the sign up code works.

I’d have preferred standalone releases as opposed to the boxsets, unless they’re classing 1-3 as a stand-alone trilogy with World being separate.

It’s under the TBC section so isn’t up for sale at present.

I reckon that's just a placeholder price like pretty much everything else amazon initially list. Zoom's is "sold out" but I doubt that's true, they might not have their allocation set yet or something like that.

Ahem.. but it's from the movie. Just a different pic.

Oh, don't worry, i made that in 20 minutes and it if took that long is just because i had to create more layers than expected as the mountains behind them were literally pink after playing with curves.

Wait.. you just mean that these titles never had a previous 4K sourced BD release, right?

Well i think Gladiator is a better starting point than A13 remastered in the first place, still one of my favourite transfers ever.

I'm not sure what you think I mean, I get that vibe a lot from your replies.

I'm inferring that because the JP flicks are getting new transfers - from original negative, according to zoom's social media - that their black levels and whatnot will be set appropriately, unlike Universal's approach to existing transfers/DIs which appears to be to crush down the blacks in HDR regardless of whether the source material will respond favourably or not.

Yes, it looks amazing. But the blacks levels are so deep and dense already that if Universal apply their HDR-o-Matic to it then it could have a very detrimental effect. Would most people even notice? Heck no. But I would.

So do we know if we’re getting individual non-steelbook editions of the movies?
That trilogy set makes no sense at all to me.
