This is a well put together film which I thoroughly enjoy. Ever since the day I watched A Beatiful Mind, I have gained a huge love for Crowe. He does act well in this but imo def not his best(not even close). Don't let that hesitate you though bc this has a really good story. If you are into government/suspense style films than this is for you.

Ben Affleck is really good in this. It is awesome to see where he has come from and to see what he is now(same for his bff Matty Damon)haha. But seriously I have grown a great respect for him over the years. I don't know/think he will ever be as good as Matt BUT I will say that he is def getting closer.

The pace of the film was really good. It was never slow to me or seemed like it dragged anywhere. I think the entire cast did a good job. It was nice seeing Helen Mirren and Robin Wright. I am a fan of both.

All in all I would say def check this out. It was most excellent.
I thought this was a good political thriller. I gave it a 4/5 i think. Very twisted.

Pretty much agree with your review there. I own this and talked Diesel into buying it, so I obviously love State of Play. I don't know what I would rate it number wise, but that doesn't really matter. It has good replay value too in my opinion, which isn't always the case with some dramas.

Jaws

Never saw it before.

Watched it....

I thought it was ok, not nearly as great as I was expecting it to be

I didn't really like any of the characters, thought the final sequence
[Show spoiler]out on the boat
was WAY too long.

The movie really drug on for me after about the halfway point.

It started off good and moderately interesting but went downhill for me, by the end I was just thinking, "Is it over yet?"

Rating - 3/5

Which is a shame, because I was hoping for it to be awesome.

you had the triple storm: (1) high expectations + (2) first viewing + (3) classic that hasn't aged well due to technological and (ridiculous fast) pacing of modern films.

I think Jaws is insanely good. It all depends what yardstick you use. Its hard to use the 1975 yardstick when its not familiar I'm the same with many classics I've never seen and watch now in 2010.

reading about the Jersey shore attacks:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey_...ttacks_of_1916
made Jaws more interesting. I think it was based on that, although I could be wrong. Crazy stat: nobody had ever died from a great white in New England, and then
[Show spoiler]3-4 die in 2 weeks or something
. i like background historical info like that. adds spice to films that are based on them.

The third element of the triple storm wouldn't have been an issue if I had actually been interested in the characters. Slower pacing is fine...as long as I care about what is going on. For this movie, I unfortunately did not

At least the insanely fake looking shark didn't bother me that much

That was one thing I did like though, not seeing the shark much at all. Made him/it more

The best thing about the movie is obviously the theme, EVERYONE knows that music. Even people who haven't seen the movie, maybe even haven't even heard of the movie.

The way I look at it....at least now I can say I've seen the film

You asked for it You said you liked the suspence of it,and the understatement of the horror by not showing the shark too often (In a lower post).Did you have problems with the actors,or did you just not like the caracters in the movie? To me Jaws is easily in my top 10 list.Think it's the only movie Spielberg has made which hasn't been marred by sentimentality.Maybe it's like surfdude is saying that expectations ruined the experience. . . .I would recommend going back and try viewing it again. It might just click

PS:Was looking at your collection, and many of your BD's are much more hectic than Jaws.Give it another shot. You may get the seminal experience it has the potential to give

I just didn't care for any of it all that much

I didn't hate it by any means, it just wasn't that good/interesting to me.

Just not my cup of tea I suppose.

My cousin has the DVD and wants to watch it one day (he's never seen it), so I may end up seeing it again at some point.

You've nothing to explain. Your take is your take.

REgarding you not caring for the characters, yes its absolutely a must! IMO, I was on the "vengence train" for what the shark had done, so I didn't care who was really hunting him. It could have been Bin Laden for all I cared. Just catch the SOB!!

I think Jaws is one of those films that is great not so much for the film itself, but because of the memories that it evokes. Example: You first watched it in 2010, and didn't care for it. I first watched it in 1984. I was 7. My parents were in bed and I sneaked down to the living room. They caught me near the end. I didnt' sleep for days. I was frozen stiff like a prehistoric ice man. For that reason, I'll always love Jaws. Not for the film, but because I'll remember running down the hall, turning on the TV, and looking over my shoulder every 5 seconds in the dark

It's great to have memories from when you are younger about movies like that, whether it be from watching a scary movie, a Disney movie, anything

Yep u are right! I mean I do think that u seeing it for the first time definitely hurts as I have had the same effect on some old so-called classics. But growing up on an old film and continuously watching it, it ages just fine as u are familiar with it. I aint as high on Jaws as most either but its still a decent film and has an important place in movie history but to me its no masterpiece by any means. I actually prefer Deep Blue Sea as my fav shark film. Got Em!!

Poltergeist II: The Other Side - I vaguely remember this one growing up but I know I at least seen some of it before because I never forgot that famous line "U cant keep her, I am not dead." Now viewing the film this time I have to say it didnt live up to the classic original at all. I think Poltergeist shouldve ended with the first film as it is one of the better horror films of all time. I am, hesitant to even watch part III but I have to finish the series out so stay tuned for that one.

Film Rating - 2 1/2 stars (out of 5)

Got Em!!

The Expendables. Fun and entertaining action movie. Most of the humor was good and some missed its mark. This is definitely the type of film that I usually avoid, but Stallone alone attracted me to the film. There was definitely a tier of acting quality that started with Stallone and Rourke and only went downhill from there. Bottom line, if you want to see cool fighting with over-the-top action and violence, this is your film. Otherwise, the story is pretty basic and only spurts of quality writing and acting.

3/5

My blu of The Shining. I had forgotten how great this looks on blu-ray. Did anyone notice when Wendy was going thru Jack's "All work and no play" papers that on ther first sheet there are some typos? Wonder if that was done on purpose or not?
Still a quintisential Nicholson piece.

He was writing randomly, probably didn't feel like editing it before finishing his work.
