I believe "To Be Free" was written specifically for the Disney California Adventure (DCA) musical, as the song is solely credited to Alan Menken. It doesn't appear in the Broadway musical (sadly).

Disneyland's website states this:

Quote:
Many of the songs from the movie are featured in the musical—plus a new song composed specifically for this production.

Composer Alan Menken, who created the original soundtrack with songwriters Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, composed a brand new song entitled "To Be Free" just for this show.
However, "Proud of Your Boy" and "High Adventure" appear in the Broadway musical, and "Proud of Your Boy" is a recurring song throughout. Sure, they added in one of Howard Ashman's last songs into the musical without adding in Aladdin's Mother, but it doesn't really work in the finished animated film (as it meant to be included when Aladdin's Mother was in the story).

Can't wait to go to the D23 expo in Anaheim. DCA still has the musical (with fresh jokes every time). The Expo itself will have performances by Broadway's current genie (James Monroe Iglehart, who won a Tony for originating the Genie). And there will also be a panel looking back on the film with the creators and some of the cast.

That is correct, "To Be Free" was written for Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular at Disney California Adventure. For as much love as it seems to have on this forum, it has an equal amount of hate from Disneyland fans, where the song is most commonly referred to as "Lucky bird."

I'm not sure. Disney's Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular opened in California in 2003 but the videos I posted are from a tv special I watched as a kid in the mid 90s which aired around 1995 on CBS before or around the time Disney bought abc. I still have my VHS recording to this day. So the song was around long before the 2003 California Adventure Musical.

I found it's IMDB page if that helps

It appears that it was originally written as a score piece (there's a track called "To Be Free" on the Original Soundtrack). And none of the demo songs included on the Soundtrack include "To Be Free" as a song. It's very likely that Menken added lyrics to it after the score was completed (Menken does write some lyrics, but he generally works with songwriters such as Ashman to write songs, as Ashman is a composer first). Either way, definitely a question for Dave Smith (which I submitted a question to, though it could take months before it's published on the Walt Disney Archives website) or Alan Menken.

It would be nice to see a Legacy Collection Soundtrack release of Aladdin (which would likely include more song and score demos, and the score and song would be in the order of the film).

Just ordered 2 Digibooks, one for me & one for my sister. She's only had a DVD+R copy a friend made her years ago from her copy. Usually my sister is like "Don't buy anything for me, save your money!" But this is one of her top favorite Disney films and she flipped out when I showed her the Digibook, so when I asked if she wanted a copy she said "Yes please!" lol

Really glad that Best Buy is doing a lenticular exclusive like we all hoped for to replace the awful oval cover, hope a picture pops up soon.

Big pass on the Target digibook- I can't stand how that or a steelbook is always their exclusive for some titles, I'd much rather have a bonus disc or alternate slip in many cases.

Highly unlikely. Slipcovers go very fast. Get it first day if you want the slip that bad.

One of the few titles I will go out of my way for to insure I get great copy. Pre-Ordering the Lenti from BB then I'll go to the store to be positive I have a great slip, plus going to Target for the DIGI. Haven't done this in a while but for this title it's worth the extra effort.

Well the reason I am asking, is I've seen the diamond edition of sleeping beauty at walmart for literally over a year and they always have the slip covers on 'em, so I assumed that they just made them all have slip covers or manufactured extra, or something like that. I haven't seen a slipless diamond edition of any classic disney movie, actually.

I think for an anticipated title like Aladdin, you should get it as soon as possible (if you really want the slipcover).

Haven't seen a slipless D.E.? You're lucky, hahaha.

I've owned the UK steelbook for a year now but never watched it until 2 weeks ago. Everyone who hasnt seen this on blu yet is in for a real treat. The sand that makes up the mputh of the Cave of Wonders is incredibly detailed - this one scene stands out to me. The rest of the movie looks fantastic too. One a side note - I have just started watching all of my Disney blus on my 120" projector set up - and I watched Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast recently too. I was shocked at how bad Little Mermaid looked on the big screen but equally shocked at how beautiful the details in Beauty and the Beast are - this is by far my favorite Disney blu to date. Back to Aladdin - I can't believe they have waited this long to release it on blu - but glad to be able to complete my collection of Disney Favorites.

You will get your copy in the mail, and if the slipcover isn't good you will go to the store and get another one? The reason I'm asking is because right now it's showing for me that the Best Buy exclusive version is only available online right now.

Since last year, BestBuy.com has been offering in store pickup preorders for select items. For Sleeping Beauty's Diamond Edition, they offered the in store pickup option sometime before its release, and I was able to pick it up in store at the pick up counter rather than wait for it in the mail.

And now BestBuy.com now offers the ability to change your item to store pickup from the order details page. You can click make changes next to the item and then select change from shipping to store pickup. However, it will not work right now, as the store pickup option is not yet available.

It should work once preorders are accepted for in store pickup, but I haven't be able to try it yet, as none of the items I preordered for shipping are not yet available to preorder for in store pickup.
