Undoubtedly a mistake. It creates an inconsistency which was rather annoying for me on the Japanese Blu-ray's Jim Hubbert subtitles, since it was correct on the U.K. disc. To be fair, even with th subtitles a lot has to be changed, like in Mononoke the village girls say "Anisama" to Ashitaka, which means brother.

So, how come when Chihiro calls Zeniba, "Oba-chan", the subtitles don't say, "Granny"?

Received my Amazon package with 10 GKIDS Ghibli titles. All, including Poppy Hill, came with a slipcover. Guess I got lucky.

They all appear to be in pristine condition!!! Did they ship in a box for you? Amazon hates me and always ship them in bubble mailers lol

This really bothers me and I have posted about this mistake elsewhere. It’s inconsistent translation logic. The translator probably didn’t keep in mind the fact that "Oba-chan" would be reprised for Yubaba and translated on a line by line basis without looking at the full picture. Sometimes calling an old lady "Granny" doesn’t always work in English and so in translations "oba-chan" is changed to a name, but here it’s significance has been overlooked.

Yes, Amazon shipped in a box with all the movies shrink wrapped together. But I’ve also received discs in bubble mailers too. It’s just so random.

With the exception of a small ding or two at the edges, the slipcovers are indeed in great condition.

I've been pretty lucky so far as well...got all the Ghibli releases above (except for Porco Rosso and Arrietty), and all came with slipcovers in great shape. The only exception was Ponyo, which I pre-ordered from DDD with a few others, and it was slightly damaged with no slipcover.

Received a ripped slipcover via Amazon. Disappointing. I want slips with these, so this sucks. Return? I don't know if any stores like Best Buy or Walmart carry these. I ordered online because neither had them on release day.

Just wondering, what was this like on the Disney release? Did it, correctly, say "Granny" on the subtitles and are there any other differences?

Saw these are all $12.99 on bestbuy.com
Anyone get any of these from there? Wondered if the titles came with slipcovers if they did.

I have bought Mononoke, Kiki's and Howl's from them, both in store and online, all came with slipcovers. If you have a large Best Buy they will have an endcap with all of the Ghibli films, they all had slipcovers on the display I saw. All of the restocks they have received over the last three weeks since the display went up have had slips. Unfortunately every time I'm in there I always miss Spirited Away, it's the only one I'm missing right now.

Blind-bought Castle in the Sky today. When I get around to watching it (which should be within the next week), should I watch it with the original soundtrack or the re-score (I'm going to watch the dub either way)?

Well, we just got another rushed review on the site, this time it's for Kiki's Delivery Service.
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Kikis...184136/#Review

Something that really bothers me about these recent reviews, is that they don't take into account whether they are worth getting if one already owns the Disney editions.

Quote:
With the Disney package out-of-print and going for around $30, this two-disc set is a no-brainer for those who didn't pick it up the first time. It's about half the price and only loses a few very brief featurettes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to all anime fans.
Now compare that to this quote from the review of the recent re-release of Bambi.
Quote:
Bambi rightly remains a pillar in the Disney canon considering both its artistic and storytelling merits. It's a classic that's destined to live on for generations to come. This "Signature Collection" re-release is very much like the others. It adds some supplements and drops a few others. The additions are fine, though beyond the superior menu screen and much more efficient (and very much welcome) supplemental layout, there's no reason for previous owners who aren't completionists to upgrade. For first-time Blu-ray buyers, it's obviously a must-own.

That's a question you're never going to get a genuine consensus on because there are viewers who are split on this. Personally, I'd recommend watching both versions of the dub and seeing which one clicks with you most.

The original score is interesting in its sparseness, but it's also a bit dated -- it was, after all, rendered on synthesizers (for the most part, there is the occasional orchestral accompaniment in some places though -- not as frequent as in the newer one though).

The newer score is longer and more expansive, and there are some scenes where the new score isn't necessary, but because the newer score is performed by an actual orchestra it doesn't sound as dated. Personally, I think the newer score is really terrific and arguably a better fit for this film, but your mileage may vary about that.

Either way, GREAT for GKids to include both versions of the score for the dub!

Thanks. I guess I'll watch each version at least once, then.

How are the subtitles on Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke? Are they subtitles or dubtitles?

From what I hear, the GKIDS edition of Princess Mononoke has literal subtitles, and both Disney's & GKIDS' edition of Spirited Away have literal subtitles.

Haven't people said that Kiki have a slightly better subtitle option than the Disney release?
