It was time to get a reservation at Dorsia. This is a movie you can't just stare at it, you have to eat it. Christian Bale's best. Whoever came up with the quotes was a genius, especially the business card scene. Now excuse me, I have to return some video tapes.

Any horror film that begins with a topless woman sitting in a creepy, cobweb-infested, abandoned house has assuredly grabbed my attention. Throw in a gore-laden corpse hanging from the back of a door and a violent knife thrust through the back of a woman's head and I'm a happy puppy. Apparently Lucio Fulci knows what I like. There's a lot of blood that gushes throughout this picture, including a marvelous scene where a fireplace poker is stabbed through a woman's throat. Of course, there's also an amazingly phony bat attack sequence but since it's so deliciously gory it gets a pass. The Massachusetts shooting locations are some of the finest used in a Fulci film, setting an ideal tone for the abhorrent activities contained within and Walter Rizzati delivers a befittingly macabre score.

I always thought Paolo Malco made a good leading man for Fulci's style of horror. His acting in both this film and Fulci's follow-up "The New York Ripper" is on point and I always wondered what he could have done with some of Lucio's later works like "Aenigma" or "Demonia." Catriona MacColl is good as Malco's wife, but I don't think her acting here reaches the level it did for her work in the other two chapters of the "Gates of Hell" trilogy ("City of the Living Dead" and "The Beyond"). Fulci does some interesting work with sound in this outing, both ambient and direct, and includes some advantageous close-ups on the eyes of his characters at various points. People nowadays seem to forget how many little touches Fulci added to his films which not only made him one of my all-time favorite horror directors but a true international symbol of slaughter as well. "The House by the Cemetery" might not rank on the highest level of films in Fulci's career, but it certainly comes close.

½

While he would still have some good films left in his career, for my money "The New York Ripper" is Lucio Fulci's last definitive classic. I don't always go in for the touchy feely attitudes of the modern age, but I will say this: if you're looking for the most misogynistic film in the history of cinema . . . ta da! Let's see what we've got here, shall we? There's more nudity than you can shake a stick at, there's a fairly detailed live sex show that also has a masturbating female audience member, there's forced stimulation of a woman via foot under the table in a bar, there's a nude woman tied to a bed shown in very close detail in the obvious aftermath of a whipping, there's another bound topless woman graphically sliced and diced with a razor, and - to top it all off - there's a female victim who has the broken end of a bottle savagely inserted into her nether regions. Yeah, I'm pretty sure Mary Whitehouse was having a conniption fit after viewing this film.

A Donald Duck-voiced serial killer preys on the women of New York while playing cat and mouse with the police lieutenant assigned to the case. Jack Hedley is an underrated actor in my opinion. He's been featured in everything from the 1968 Bette Davis film "The Anniversary" to the 1981 James Bond film "For Your Eyes Only" and yet I've seen very little mention of him among film fans. Here he displays his talent by acting like the streets have beaten him down over long years of routine police work and he wears that bitterness like a second badge on his chest. Paolo Malco returns to the Fulci fold as a personable psychoanalyst asked to create a criminal profile that will help catch the good, efficient butcher roaming the city. The payoff for the film is bloody but it isn't quite as shocking as what came before. It does wrap things up in a nice cinematic bow and the overall effect creates a staggering slasher that ranks with the upper echelon of eighties horror movies.

I only ever saw this film once when it was released on home media. I figured it was about time to give it another go. There are a few moments that unquestionably made my skin crawl. It doesn't get much more suspenseful than when Karen Gillan was preparing to move the Lasser Glass and saw a reflection of three sheet-covered statues where there should only be two. There are also some terrific psychological discussions regarding false memories versus supernatural powers that make up the basis for the entire storyline. Mike Flanagan's direction is even-handed as he deftly balances traumatic outbursts with more reserved interactions. He also handles the boundary bending between past and present, real and illusion in genius fashion. Gillan herself has star quality written all over her and "Oculus" is really her show, although Katee Sackhoff tries her best to steal the proceedings with her slow descent into twitchy suspicion and
[Show spoiler]ultimately madness suffered in chained torment.
In the end you're never quite sure what's real and what isn't, right up to the fantastic conclusion that
[Show spoiler]shows the true self-preserving power of the Lasser Glass as it manipulates Gillan's brother into killing her.
"Oculus" is without a doubt one of the best horror films to come out of the 2010 decade.

10/7 - All Hallow's Eve: Trickster -
3rd film in the series, weird but had decent atmosphere. Nuthin special and one wild story toward the end.

10/8 - Speak No Evil (2024) -
Solid remake and cool switch up on the klymaxx. Original film slightly better but both good films.

[Show spoiler]9/1 - Deliverance - Great performance from Andra Day and refreshing take on Exorcisms.

9/2 - Longlegs - Just terrible and very slow. Nic please stop.

9/11 - The Witch - Good film! Loved the lead actress!

9/12 - Terrifier - Low budget but up my alley.

9/14 - Immaculate - Loved the lead actress and very good film.

9/15 - The Descent Part 2 - Not as good as the first, but love that it was a direct sequel.

9/16 - You'll Never Find Me - Mixed here, but it was ok I guess.

9/18 - Blink Twice - Very good movie and great directorial debut from Zoe.

9/19 - The Rental - Not a bad slasher film.

9/21 - Terrifier 2 -
Good follow up to the OG. Savage kills and the lead actress was fire! Cant wait to see part 3.

9/24/24 - All Hallows Eve -
Its an ok Anthology film, where the character Art the Clown was created. Not as good as the Terrifier films though.

9-26 - All Hallows Eve 2 -
Ok film but nuthin special. Very short films in this Anthology Horror.

9/27 - Bloodline -
Stiffler the serial killer. Kinda bland but not the worst film Ive seen.

9/28 - Firestarter -
Love the original but this remake was very underwhelming. The female lead was pretty good but the script wasnt it.

9/29 - Thanksgiving -
Finally a slasher about Thanksgiving. Very entertaining but predictable. Wouldnt mind seeing a sequel...

9/29 - Talk To Me -
Original concept and its something about foreign horror films. Very good watch....

9/30 - Nightmares (1983) -
It was good seeing this classic after so many years. The Video Game & Rat stories are my favs in this.

10/1 - Speak No Evil (2022) -
Im not a big subtitle fan but foreign Horror hits different. Disturbing ending but good movie.

10/2 - The Hangman -
A waste of a hour & half. Just not a good film. Please stay away from this.

10/2 - The Cellar -
Not a good night of films. Elisha Cuthbert couldnt save this film.

10/3 - Break -
This has nuthin on Frozen. Didnt realize it was a foreign film with a terrible English dub version. You can skip this one.

10/4 - Friday the 13th (1980) -
My fav Horror franchise. Not the best film in the series but its what kicked things off.

10/5 - Friday the 13th Part 2 -
Jason is born! My fav Horror film. Potato Sack Jason. Ginny is the best Final girl in any Horror movie.

10/6 - He's Out There -
Decent slasher film with solid acting by the lead actress and her kids.

08/10 - Bedazzled (2000)

Not a Horror but certainly fits the Halloween season. The Devil's never been hotter. If that lady appeared and offered me seven wishes in exchange for my soul I think I'd be very tempted. Everytime I watch this I'm baffled that Brendan Fraser didn't become a huge star. He's especially hilarious as the Basketball player. Definitely one of my all-time favourite comedies, though I'd actually love to see this remade again with the wishes going wrong in horrifying, violent ways as more of a Horror Comedy. Cast Glen Powell and Ana de Armas/Sydney Sweeney. Bosh! Print money!

07/10 - V/H/S (2012)

One of the worst things about being an experienced Horror fan? Nothing scares you anymore. Now, when I first saw this, the Amateur Night segment really, really spooked me, now nothing hits like that, and it's not just because I've seen it before, it's just that I've virtually seen everything at this point. The ol' noggin has been altered and I wish I could get that terrified, watching through the fingers fear back again. 10/31/98 is the best segment, so good. Amateur Night 2nd place, the rest are "meh".

07/10 - V/H/S/2 (2013)

Virtually the same in that there's two clear standout segments, and I'll echo the majority of people, it's Safe Haven and Slumber Party Alien Abduction. They're both incredible and Safe Haven in particular is just on an entirely different level. Masterful stuff.

07/10 - V/H/S: Viral (2014)

Bonestorm is the only standout, and unlike most I presume, I think it's pretty overrated purely because the rest are so stinky, though Dante The Great is wonderfully silly.

07/10 - V/H/S/94 (2021)

This was extremely strong, had it not been for The Wake, this was a five skulls outing. The Subject was incredible! Storm Drain and Terror were awesome too.

07/10 - V/H/S/99 (2022)

One of the weakest, probably the weakest outside of the oft derided Viral but... To Hell and Back really saved it for me. It's not that the others were bad, just quite "okay".

08/10 - V/H/S/85 (2023)

The vibes were there but this didn't really do it for me overall. Ambrosia was neat but wish I got more of that fvcked up family. Maybe a bit of marathon fatigue getting the better of me? Wasn't the best.

08/10 - V/H/S/Beyond (2024)

Fatigue Schmatigue! This worked gangbusters! Stork and Stowaway were superb. Fur Babies possibly one of the worst segments in the whole franchise, especially for the theme at hand.

Overall, I'd like to see the producers do something away from the VHS/Found Footage format because while some stories thrive on it, others are limited by it. A straight-up Horror anthology would be dope!
where is everyone watching the V/H/S movies?

The Conspiracy (2012, 84 minutes) ½✰✰✰✰✰ Smart found footage framework capitalizing on familiar conspiracy theories. I appreciated it's unique approach using a documentary style and conspiracy tropes which seemed socially conscious about economic angst and tech upheaval. There were some slow spots but it has a subtle plot that feels relatable beyond the film even if it's all in fun. The bull mask scene on the poster was a great moment. The tone shifts about half way from observation to participation and keeps it from lulling too much. It was weird but also maybe not envelope pushing and in today's conspiracy minded culture (post COVID alone) probably dulled than it might have been in 2012.

Dashcam (2021, 80 minutes) ½✰✰✰✰✰✰ Dashcam takes found footage to another level of obnoxious shaky cam by downgrading the camera with no pretense of film quality. Injecting 'humor' that seems intentionally obnoxious about people sticking vegetables into butts or subtle and not so subtle political humor - I think it's a commentary but at what cost. The chatty rhetoric does make some of the twists more glaring. Annie Hardy makes a good effort but lacks the millennial conspiracy minded social media maven vibe her character is written with so it's a bit off, yelling 's-it on my balls' when something weird happens dulls the impact. It gets credit for being more animated and lively for a covid era film. The horror is gnarly with car crash level action but the whole thing smells of 'jump the shark' level gimmick. Ultimately it works at an unrelenting degree of blurred fast motion unrelenting bloodletting and jump scares ambitious to the point of tiresome. With a more solid character and a bit more steady cam it would have been much better. There were times it seemed suspiciously similar to Rec or VHS, both of which did it better. Nevermind the horrible near 10 minute pointless credit sequence.

Thale (2012, 76 minutes) ✰✰✰ Nicely paced with a cool hook, strange buildup, and a magical eeriness. Melancholy and scenic horror with an measured ethereal vibe that carries the film. There are some dated effects but Thale is a curious creature - relatable, horrifying, and otherworldly. The plot there is feels unnecessary for a film carried mostly by careful visuals that play on our conventions of innocence and the unexpected vibe.

American Psycho [Uncut] (2000, 103 minutes) ½✰ I'm curious about the book this is based on - It seems brilliant for a female writer/director team to tackle what seems like a portrait of male aggression and they really nailed it. "I simply am not there." The skin care introduction is a perfect set up thematic, menacing, and trivial. Some of the 80s references are maybe too on the nose but they are so plentiful it hits. Christian Bales gives one of surprisingly many career defining performances in his filmography; exaggerated, sardonic, and aggressive. "Pumpkin you're dating an a-shole." The dark aggressive humor is great engaging but still a slow burn towards increasingly more chaotic stuff. The commentary on empty banter is just one of the many great contrasts like blood splattered Huey Lewis. The beginning is strong and iconic it lull a bit in the middle but the veiled neediness and unraveling of Bateman is a great slow burn filled with the 80s scene/sound candy; but this is probably good because it keeps it from being a brainless gore fest (no that I'm against schlock) and more an evil existential question of identity. I wish the Evelyn subplot had been meatier, it feels too played as a joke and while Bateman's lack of human connection is a point this feels puzzlingly shallow in an intelligent comedy like this. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre homage is brilliant tying together themes from the cosmetic mask, imitation from tv, and fitting the murder vibe.

The Demon Murder Case (1983, 97 minutes) ½✰✰✰✰✰✰ Andy Griffith and a young Kevin Bacon (just before his breakout in Footloose) versus the devil or one hammy kid in a made for tv movie. "All we did is arm them against the devil in a very small way..." Demonologist Andy Griffith, a national treasure, is in pre-Matlock investigator mode as one of 'The Warrens' and it's interesting compared to the Conjuringverse films (based on The Lorrans); here less scary more dramatic aiming. "We'll have no more nonsense about it!" Now this film seems antiquated but I doubt it was ever fresh calling on every cliche it can; take me instead, the power of Christ commands you, etc. Cliche becomes its strength, retelling tired stuff by way of an accessible tv sensibility - toned down on the schlock (still seems edgy for tv) and up on the melodrama. To it's credit it doesnt waste time on pretense or ambiguity where premonitions on Halloween are plot until is becomes less interested in the supernatural. The plot structure is interesting with a demon heavy first third then some meandering when usually there is a buildup.

The Evil [aka House of Evil] (1978, 89 minutes) ✰✰✰✰ The spooky abandoned house well lit for the camera, milking the location for all it's worth. An old man walks through the empty mansion with axe shoulder high and cheesy dated music is a vibe more setup than fire. Eventually some of the effects work surprisngly week breathing (after)life into the place and it gets really nice with some ripe scares that surprised me (going in expecting cheese). Yuppies versus a rich house,. "I've seen flashes of this figure, it's just a shape really..." I enjoyed the mix of prototypical haunting, dated effects, and a weird end twist.

Ma Da: The Drowned Spirit (2024, 90 minutes) ✰✰✰✰✰✰ Inconsistent stuff from the school of less is more. Swampscape with murky waters and symphony of frogs is nightmares but the ghouls here take some time to separate from the swamp itself. The rustic straw building have a folk horror element and timeless feel - only sometimes the water is too clear or staging obvious. The camera eventually finds some gnarly swamp horrors we can hear around us before the jump scare. The slow moving pan ripe with moments before a revel, an out of sort echo in the swamp is the best part of Ma Da but sometimes it doesnt dispense the payout. Lost in paranoia and psychology at times it struggles to establish what we should be afraid of beyond a shadow, a doll, or in a tangent of clarity walking dead. The centerpiece of the film is an ambitious twist Im not sure they pulled off but what an attempt.

Rejuvenatrix [aka The Rejuvenator] (1988, 90 minutes) ✰✰✰✰✰ Fake science and vanity overload the morality tale. "You mean by rearranging that one carbon molecule you can retard the regressive effect?" Rejuvenator is more monologue happy embracing the example of the brain with its laborious explanation to go with the superficial cosmetic beauty. The exaggerated aging effects are gruesome highlights with the sort of body melting that we could all use more of until they get a little fake but still glorious in b movie charm. Complete with a hair metal concert the 80s is strong here. Unremarkable plot done with ooze and glam to be more fun than I expected.

The Wasp Woman (1959, 72 minutes) ½✰✰✰✰✰ The bee origin here is a keen point allowing for the cheesy scifi stuff without overdoing a science explanation. Michael Mark seems like an earnest scientist and sells the gag with a charisma preaching old guy charm. After watching a remake of this in Rejuvenatrix this original has less vanity and feels more humble; or more business minded and misses some of the more relatable angst of aging for it. There are ageless cliches like elaborate test tubes everywhere but WW's plot feels unique. The seriousness of WW makes it feel more like a parable of addiction, and well written for it (other versions a little more lost in sensationalism; but this one catches up in the end with a standout scene).
