I bought Mud, On The Road (I was on the fence about it, but the write-up on the back / the supporting cast won me over), The Place Beyond The Pines, and To The Wonder today, plus a couple Disney films. I rewatched Mud (as it's my second favorite film of the year and still is). I'm about to watch TPBTP now, and I'll probably watch Oblivion after this. I remembered that I bought it this morning and I haven't watched it yet. I'm going away for a few days so I won't be able to watch anything until I come back. ![]() If you liked Nichols' Take Shelter, you will love Mud. |

![]() I'll let you know. I may do a Malick run when I come back (I've seen all except for The New World and To The Wonder, so...) Regarding Nichols, I enjoyed both movies in their own respective ways, but I liked the subject material a lot better in Mud. |

Oh man...I forgot how much I loved Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt. Not entirely Criterion-related, but I always envisioned this one as a knock-em-out-of-the-park Criterion package someday. The Blu-ray in the Masterpiece Collection set looks beautiful, but this movie also deserves a vast wealth of extras and documentaries.
That above poster art for To the Wonder, with Mont St. Michel in the background, is my favorite artwork for the movie. The Mont St. Michael sequences are my favorite sequences in the film, and they happen early on, but the rest of the movie keeps pace so well. I'm going to wait and watch my Blu-ray of To the Wonder this weekend, when I have some time to chill back and absorb. I love second viewings of Terrence Malick movies, so I'm looking forward to this. |

It's a tight race for his best. The way I see it, he's made a great film and 4 masterpieces. To the Wonder falls significantly short of the glory of those. I like the film, but I have to forgive alot to enjoy it.

![]() I just remember a negative response to The New World upon its initial release, so.. yeah. I wish the intended cut was on Blu. |

I have to see all of it (I've seen some of it on television).. but I do like where he's headed a lot more (pretty much the style that was perfectly described in that review you showed me way back when To The Wonder was first released)... so I can't wait for his next film. Badlands is my least favorite and left me uninterested, and To The Wonder fascinated me (of course, I'm only saying Badlands as an example because it was the earliest, but I do like the recent films more than the previous ones...)

I appreciate To the Wonder as an interpretive dance brought to film, and, if I had to come up with one word to describe this movie, then that word would be "grace." The grace of love, the grace of nature, the grace of God, the grace of human companionship, the grace of beauty found in everyday settings when viewed from unique angles, and so on. I'm still a single chap in my middle age, but Malick's To the Wonder makes me thankful for those times in my life when I took a chance, put my heart out there, expressed my feelings to women, and showed my cards on the table, even if nothing developed from there or even if it did not go as far as a first date. The movie reminds us that even the mistakes, failures, and missed opportunities are still glorious in their own strange way. To the Wonder just has an awesome flow to it. Almost like that river scene in The Night of the Hunter, except that it goes on through the entire movie. It's no accident that so many scenes depict the flow and ebb of water. I need to see the movie a second time before my tiny dinosaur brain can piece together a coherent review, so this weekend's viewing should be great. |

Re: Owl, largely that's how I view the film and enjoy it, but there is really nothing there to engage my thoughts. It will sporadically engage my senses for 110 minutes, but little else. |

I actually saw To the Wonder during the same weekend that I saw the derivative, but fun (oops, I meant "in the tradition of", but fun...haha) Oblivion, and it's amusing to me that both were released on the same day today as well. Both films are eye candy to a great extent, and I thoroughly enjoyed simply looking at both of them, but the Malick film burrowed inside my psyche and reverberated there in the way that the fun science fiction film was not quite able to do. I'm about to watch the Oblivion Blu-ray in a few minutes. I'm tempted to watch it with the isolated M83 score feature tonight, but I'll probably just watch the standard version and save the isolated track for later. I'm so glad that the isolated track is included as a feature, though. |

Honestly, I didn't even find Oblivion all that visually or sonically arresting. It has good art design and lighting, but that's about all. The camera work and placement were all pretty standard classical blockbuster fare.
Oblivion is by far the worst science fiction film Cruise has ever starred in. Yes, I liked War of the Worlds and Legend more...by far. |

To my discredit, I only saw Legend once during my childhood, but have never taken the time to revisit it. I remember enjoying it, so I should give it another whirl at some point. It's out of character for a 1980s nerd like myself to have let that movie fall by the wayside. |
