Even though I REALLY liked the new Star Trek...

Shatner as Kirk, and Nimoy as Spock.

Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade in the Maltese Falcon - nobody remembers Ricardo Cortez from the first film version made 10 years prior.

Also Bogie as Rick Blaine or Charlie Allnut...

True! Did you ever see Manhunter (1986)? Red Dragon was actually the remake of this movie, and Silence of the Lambs was the sequel. William Peterson played Will Graham, while Brian Cox (Bourne movies and Troy) played Hannibal Lecter. Even though this was the first movie in the series, it is still very hard to go back and watch it with someone else in the role of Hannibal. The character was actually a very small part in the movie (it was greatly extended in Red Dragon for obvious reasons).

Well, they're certainly gonna try with the Hollywood remake of Let the Right One In!

Billy Bob Thornton, Dwight Yoakam and the late John Ritter in "Sling Blade" All three did amazing performaces in that film and cannot be replaced IMO.

I agree with you and many other ppl here. To be completely honest, I don't really like the idea of this thread because there are innumerable actors who cannot be replaced if their films are remade. There are quite literally thousands. Just a few:

1) Godfather (everybody)

2) Citizen Kane (Welles)

3) Raging Bull (Deniro)

4) Taxi Driver (Deniro)

5) To Kill a Mockingbird (Peck)

It really comes down to how iconic the role was. The films I listed above pretty much can never be remade successfully to begin with. But then there are films like TDK. Every single person, including Ledger, can be replaced and the movie remade. Why? Because there are a ton of different interpretations on the characters. That is not the case for the 5 I listed above, where the films are such and the roles are such that there is no other way to play the roles besides the way they were played. Was Ledger great in his role? Yeah, definitely. But there are so many different ways to play that role.

Absolutely agree! That BD is on my next to get list. And as mentioned by jhiggy23 - Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird.

Also adding this to the southern theme of this post - Paul Newman as Cool Hand Luke.

PS - someone was crazy enough to do a remake of TKAM (1997), with a totally unknown, no name actor in the role...he disappeared after that movie.
