High Plains Drifter is loads of fun, The Outlaw Josey Wales is completely charming, and Million Dollar Baby is beautiful. None of these are even close to Unforgiven for me.

I find it kind of shameful that Mystic River only has one vote. Imo, it is his best overall film, without a doubt. It is not his best directing job, which I believe to Letters from Iwo Jima, but in terms of best film, no doubt.

Clint Eastwood has made some great films, he's especially on a roll this decade. Having said that, Mystic River is one of the finest examples of great cinema there is. It floors me every time I see it.

Did many people not see Mystic River?

That film deserves far more support than two votes.

To me, the big three in no particular order so far, are:

Million Dollar Baby
Mystic River
The Unforgiven

Everything else in between is gravy.

I didn't feel much for Mystic River, kind of was disappointed with it.

I agree those are definitely his best three films. For me it is really a toss up between Mystic River and Unforgiven, as I think they are both amazing films. I just feel like Unforgiven has more replayability for me.

I feel A Perfect World ranks amongst his top. Such a small film with a big heart.

Its good to see a bit of diversity over this topic as it is a difficult one to call. One thing is for sure, he has certainly matured as a director in the last 10 years or so and who knows maybe his best is yet to come as he certainly has a good eye for a story.

The reason i chose Unforgiven is basically it ticks all the boxes for me - A great story , wonderfully colourful characters with all their flaws ,beautiful cinematography (as usual) an amazing cast and a musical score I couldnt get out of my head for weeks the first time I saw it. Finally its always a film I can go back to time and time again and it never dissapoints.

Im glad to see its the majoritys choice too , but like I said its a tough call , He really has made some incredible movies.

So I just watched Unforgiven again (haven't seen it in a few years) and while it is still a great film, I don't think I would say it's Clint's best movie anymore - I would change my vote to Mystic River if I could. Unforgiven is still my favorite western though.

I definitely agree. A very well thought out response! I never thought of Eastwood's character as a "wuss" in this film, unlike some others here. It's obvious he's struggling to be a (in his mind) good person. When he says that his late wife cured him of his "wickedness," it seemed like he was having trouble believing it himself. (*POSSIBLE SPOILER AHEAD*) This is in contrast to his friend Ned Logan, who can't bring himself to shoot another man again.

Oh, by the way, I voted for Letters From Iwo Jima. I think it's Eastwood's best film to date.

I went with Changeling. Great movie and his most mature work thus far.
