I also really liked Lawrence of Arabia, so my question is:

Do you recommend I blind buy this movie?

I love romance, drama, action, meditative, thought-provoking, epic- larger than life movies.

It's on my pre-order list, so just let me know what you think I should do.

Thanks a lot!

Default Never seen this film...

Is this essentially a chic flic? It doesn't really grab me enough to want to see, much less own.

Good afternoon,

No. It is a classic period drama based on Boris Pasternak's famous novel. While the film tells a moving personal story of love and loss, it also recreates the events leading to the Bolshevik Revolution in Tsarist Russia.

From all of the films that have been released on Blu-ray this year, Doctor Zhivago is the easiest one to recommend, aside from perhaps Fellini's 8 1/2, Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin, and Soderbergh's Che.

Pro-B

Ditto!

Not, that I needed much convincing in the first place, since it's a David Lean movie!!

I purchased A Passage to India from someone here recently and loved it also. I did happen to see Dr. Zhivago on tv a few months ago and thought it was a great movie too. I think you will be very happy with a blind buy on it especially since you enjoy that style of movie making which I really do too.

Oh, great! Yeah, bizarrely I enjoy old-fashioned movie making just as much and often even more than the latest high-tech visual effects blockbusters.

To me story is king, and as long as that is the central theme I am all for it!

Glad you liked 'A Passage to India' also! It's such a marvelous masterpiece!

I may be waiting for a price drop, since $28.99 is a bit steep, but I am definitely going to get it!

Have a nice day!

I'm watching this right now; could have chosen to watch Saving Private Ryan or Avatar before this one but this is one of my favorite David Lean films (even more so than Lawrence of Arabia and Bridge on the River Kwai). After all, I own an original movie poster, lobby card set, the book, the BBC version and the 10-part Russian TV version w/ subtitles. All I can say is that so far I am very pleased with this release and feel that my money was well spent. I've seen detail which I haven't seen before, the movie has a very fine grain structure and I think the color is fantastic. Still, the picture is 4/5 and the audio is 4/5 but I think those ratings are due to the quality of the film when it was made and not due to excessive DNR, etc.

I love that! You'll have the same experience with Saving Private Ryan. I certainly did. Looking forward to this.

I matched the advertised price for ULTIMATE ELECTRONICS at BEST BUY today. I just printed the IMAGE only of the ad and took it into the store. It was easy. (and my local ULTIMATE E. doesn't sale blus etc)

Wow. I'm glad to see so many people love this film. Also, there's a lot who are blind buying this (go for it!).

I've been spoiled over the years with Doctor Zhivago. I've seen the film 5 times or so--- two of which have been on the big screen.

The film is a masterwork from one of cinema's greatest directors (Lean made my personal favorite-- Lawrence of Arabia-- get it on blu, Sony!!!). Lean got his start as editor and it really shows in Zhivago. The film is a lesson in fine editing. Especially in the latter half of the film with some absolutely breath-taking cuts, transitions and dissolves. David Lean knew how to piece together a film!

That's not even mentioning the first rate cast, first rate set design and costumes and extraordinary score from Maurice Jarre. Lara's theme is sublime as are a few waltzes which exude refinement.

For me this is a no-brainer first day purchase. I love this film!

Well, I'm 1/2 way through the movie and I can honestly say that the screen caps that I've seen on other sites don't do this film justice. When there is a color other than black or brown, those colors really jump off of the screen. As for audio, gunshots, train whistles, etc. are simply amazing! I'm loving this release and I honestly doubt it could have been much better.

Picked this up this morning at Best Buy as a blind buy. They had a whole stack of Saving Private Ryan but only 2 copies of Doctor Zhivago.

With use of the GSA B&N link and code, I ordered it for just over $16.00 shipped without being a member. See the VERY helpful B&N thread over at DVD Talk - DVD Bargains.

Yeah, me too, they just don't make them like that anymore. I recently got Zulu and it blew me away as well. Another epic one if you happen to have a HD DVD player is Mutiny on the Bounty with Marlin Brando. Looks amazing in HD and a real treat to watch as well
