I saw Buddy Rich in the mid 70's when he was touring with a band of college students. He was fairly old at the time, but he still had awesome chops!

No doubt about that. In fact, here's a performance from Rich in 1970: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWrxHP36N1Q

He is, in my opinion, the best jazz drummer and the best drummer ever. Bonham and Moon tie for the best rock drummer, and Peart is the best progressive rock drummer and my personal favorite alongside Bonham and Moon.

Then again, this is a "favorite drummers thread".

Well I happen to be a drummer with over 20 years of experience and my favs are:

Danny Carey
Mike Portnoy
Stuart Copeland
Niel Peart

I'm not extremely crazy about "speed" drummers like Joey Jordison, even though I do like a lot of metal/hard core. I like my drummers more on the technical side.

As a drummer, what do you think of Steve DiStanislao who played with David Gilmour?

I've never listened to any David Gilmour. I'll definitely give it a listen. Another newer drummer that really caught my ear was Jon Theodore from Mars Volta. Also must give props to Matthew McDonough from Mudvayne.

Default Bonzo...

As with the group in my avatar, it would be John Bonham. I usually am able to sit through his solos in "Moby Dick"...

Yes that is.

I'd also like to add John Rutsey and Alan White on my list. Both are pretty underrated drummers in my opinion.

I just started listening to DT in the last year so I was surprised to find out that Mike Portnoy was 43 years old. I hadn't realized they'd been around so long, so I was guessing late 20s or 30s then I realized they've been making music for 20 years.

A lot of great drummers out there, but no one as unique as Keith Moon. I saw a clip of Daltry once saying that if you listen to his playing, he's drumming like he's a vocalist. He's all over the place during the vocals, but plays it straight during the breaks. I thought it was an interesting observation. I'm amazed that with all of that chaos, he was still able to keep the band together.

Stephen Morris of Joy Division and New Order is my favourite drummer. It's sad how overlooked he is.
