Okay, I've skimmed this thread, but I need to ask this anyway. Most of the people who said they didn't like it didn't give much of a history of liking/disliking Terry Gilliam's films. So I have to ask-- is this worth a blind buy if I liked Time Bandits, Munchausen and 12 Monkeys? I wanted to see this in the theater but never got the chance....

I did find there were more theaters around here that played it than you may realize. I've been hearing it's indulgent, but better than his previous drecks (Brother's Grimm, Tideland).

To me it's really better than Brother's Grimm. The pace is kinda odd through the whole movie, yet it remains a pretty good and original tale.
I guess it depends whether you like "adult tale" and Terry Gilliam's universe. If you are into that, you'll enjoy it.

I really like the movie "The Fall", how does this movie compare? Also I did like the Brothers Grimm, but I really enjoy adult fantasy tales so I suspect that I am already predisposed to like the Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

I consider The Fall like a masterpiece, so Parnassus is far from it in my opinion. In The Fall you have stunning natural places, it's almost some paintings that you do not have in Terry Gilliam's movie, involving a lot of special effects inside the Imaginarium.
The thing is, I quite enjoyed Parnassus in the theaters and watching it again on blu-ray yesterday led me to discover how weird is the pace. Still, it's an enjoyable movie, but not the kind of movie that grow on you over the time.

I guess you should give it a try.

I love The Fall on Blu-ray so much, but I almost think I need to pick up a spare DVD copy of it too, so I can loan it out to people that don't have Blu because I think everyone should see it (even if they have to settle for standard def).

I'll probably check out Parnassus. I assume you watched the UK Blu-ray, how is the quality? I assume that is makes a pretty great Blu-ray, but I'll have to wait 4 weeks for the US one.

Actually, I have the french blu-ray.
I'd give to the audio and video 4/5.
The voices seem a bit distant and there's a few shots where the black level isn't deep enough. It's a good BR, but not perfect.

I have made a test on my blog, but it's in french :

Maybe you can try to get translation with google but I don't know if it will be fine.

Even if you enjoy Gilliam's greater efforts, 12 Monkeys being my favorite...I would give this a rent before blind buying. Yes, as usual Gilliam does not disappoint in the visuals department. He creates a wonderful dream world influenced by the characters and incarnations that inhabit them. However, the jumping in and out between worlds becomes more the focus rather than the main trio of characters in the "real" world, like Christopher Plummer, Heath Ledger, and the young girl. Their history is touched upon all too briefly.
The end seems a bit rushed and unclear. I think it had more potential...whether or not Ledger's sad and untimely death had more to do with the original direction the script was going is unclear. Perhaps more will be discoverd on the blu ray release in the special features department.

Worth a rent though, for sure.

I've never seen this film, but the disc certainly got a good review here on the site...I must admit the visuals look stunning. I love "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen," so I may have to take a chance on this one, but not at $22.99, I'll wait until the price comes down.

It's your money. Make a decision. I've seen it and will be buying it, so I can't help you. I don't know your likes or dislikes. I don't know if you enjoy "2 Girls And 1 Cup." All of these things come into play when suggesting the blind buy of a film.

I HATED this in the theater, but I am not a Gilliam fan either.

I have to say I am glad I rented it from NetFlix.

Didn't care much for it. It's an ok film, but not something I would probably rewatch.

Frankly I thought Brothers Grimm was a better film than this one. Oh well.
