They open them simply to have the case on display without a game in it to prevent theft. They sell them as new.

I've gone to Gamestop in the past and asked for a game, they grabbed the case from the shelf, looked for the game in the drawer, then told me it was the last one. I walked away.

ok, then i do agree with you, if they are opening the game up, then it should be sold as used, at least give you a sealed copy, if it really is the last one, then sell it used at a discount, that case has probably been grabbed by tons of people, dropped, stepped on, had boxes set on top of, etc... you shouldnt have to take a scratched, scuffed, sticky, or otherwise not pristine case for a "new" game, no matter if the disc has been touched or not, and if more people would walk away like you did, maybe gamestop would change their policy, but if people continue to buy games that way, they have every right to continue to sell them that way, smart consumers have nobody to blame but the not-so-smart ones that have to have the game right now this second and dont care what the case is like or if they could go to a different store and get it brand new for nearly the same price

Whats worse is that they put their "NEW" sticker with price RIGHT ON THE CASE. BB and other retailers put their sticker on the plastic wrapping! At GS if you get that last game good luck removing that sticker.

i hate that, i seem to always get blu rays with the stickers right on the plastic sleeve that holds the cover art, and pulling the sicker off always stretches the plastic just a bit, just enough to be annoying

This is why I no longer shop at scam stop. Not matter what good deals they have going (like they do now), I refuse to spend my money there.

I refuse to buy new games from them because you don't get a sealed copy, and I have no faith that someone hasn't already played it. That's a policy that makes no sense, and if they are lending these out and then selling them as new, they need to be forced to stop immediately (or fully disclose to the buyer what they are doing).
Well some games are magically sealed with their magical laminator. Sold as new. Game do the same thing over here so I never buy from them.

This.

Plus most of their employees are just rude and think they know more than most gamers. WRONG!

Hope this guy wins but I doubt it.

I agree. The employees at Game Stop always think they know everything when it comes to video games. I remember when I bought my PS3. They tried to talk me out of it because they insisted that the Wii was a better system and I would be much happier with one. First of all, I went in there because at the time PS3s were hard to find and they were the only store that had them and that was the only reason why I was going there. Second of all, I already owned a Wii and they didn't even ask me if I had one prior to telling me I should get a Wii instead of a PS3. What a bunch of ignorant morons!

He's not and he has no case. I'm not the biggest fan of scamstop but they are not wrong in this instance (they really do need to change so of their policies and people need to stop ripping themselves off buying used games when they only cont $5 less than a sealed version).

exactly, this guy just didnt think at all before buying, a lot of gamers can be impulsive people, and i think gamestop takes advantage of that and thats why they are able to sell used games at those prices and continue those types of policies, if consumers wise up and stop buying used games at those prices and stops buying "new" games that they reseal, then im sure gamestop will change their policies, until consumers do that though, they have no reason to change, so i wouldnt expect them to

Those are traits present in most younger gamers, just go to any gamer forum. Nothing but flaming posts full of foul language. That is also why I hardly ever play online. Thankfully almost all of the members/gamers here are the more mature variety.

Game Stop does need to change their policy on new games, but the used game policy is fine. If you don't think their pricing is fair don't buy from them. I only buy "cheap" games anyway, so I am not affected. Most of my purchases are $20 or less. I will buy a new game for $40 or so occasionally, just not from Game Stop.

Tell you what, get gamers to stop stealing games, then I'll support your views on if they're able to take a game out of the box in order to have a display copy of a brand new game.

Sure, it's called a plastic security box. Seems like no one else needs to do it like Gamestop, so I don't see that as a valid argument at all.

The other problem (I've posted about this before) is that those "new" opened games can and are loaned out to employees to "try out" so that they know what they're talking about.

...great, except it's not new any longer. And yes, I know this for a fact since my buddy used to work there.

its just like at movie rental places, the new releases are free to employees the week before they officially release, so they can watch and help customers with rental decisions, and youre right, those are no longer new, and they should be sold as used, gamestop cant be forced to sell them as used, but they will change their policy if it costs them enough sales

Exactly. They could purchase security cases, like Best Buy does. Or keep them locked up, like Target and Walmart do. Instead? Let's open the game! Then stick a big sticker on the actual case that's hard to remove! Oh, while we are at it, here you go employees, TRY IT OUT! Then we will sell it as new.

they also seem to get promo cases in advance before the release of a game to try and boost pre-orders. im sure they could use those instead. print out replacement covers. if theres a will, theres a way.

the stickers, while annoying, dont really get to me. nothing that lighter fluid cant get rid of. used to do that with price stickers on carded figures when i used to collect.
