I think you should rent it. What you see as a 5 might be a 2 or 3 for me. I don't doubt the review but for people who don't like the style it was shot in, they would lower the rating. Even though it was meant to look like that.

Woodbridge Costco has only a few SPRs left (around 4 I think). There's also Gladiator (very little left), Transformers (little left), Braveheart (moderate amount), Indiana Jones (moderate amount, no slipcovers), Forrest Gump (A LOT, no slipcovers) and Iron man (A LOT, no slipcovers). They're all priced $19.99.

I just picked it up and just watched it for a few minutes to give you an update on the PQ. Your friend is right. I would give it a 3.5/5 as well. I'm actually disappointed in it. For those of you who haven't picked it up yet, wait for the price to drop or pick it up used.

really? if you don't mind me asking, what kind of display are you using?

reading the blu-ray.com and dvdbeaver? reviews, they say the picture maintains it's original format. of course it isn't going to be crystal clear like Avatar. SPR had a gritty dirty look to it, i'm eager to pick this up after work.

Picked up SPR earlier. Great price. Believe me, it's got amazing PQ. If you want some accurate shots, head over to AVS. It looks spectacular, and better yet, exactly how it's supposed to look. It's like watching documentary footage from WW2. Like Minority Report, It has a very unique style and the Blu-ray handles it with ease. I can't wait to watch the whole thing tomorrow night.

+1 million! the PQ has never looked so good! i love the look and feel of SPR.

the AQ is incredible, demo material for sure. the normandy invasion is something else, bullets all over the place. feels like Rambo but on a more epic level.

i'm about halfway through the movie, love it!

see, but i wasnt a huge fan of how minority report looked on blu. i am not a fan of alot of grain, and it sure had a bunch of that. i still love the movie so i kept it, but if SPR is like that too, i may be disappointed. should be arriving in mail for me by weeks end so ill find out for myself in a bit.

Yes, from what I remember, both SPR and Minority Report were grainy at the theatres, so it's definitely how it's supposed to look.

Maybe you're being sarcastic (hopefully) but that doesn't make any sense.

I am only partially sarcastic.

The whole reason for owning the BD is for added resolution and audio fidelity.

I fail to see any advantage of BD or DVD for that matter, for movies like THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, or others of its kin.

It strikes me as odd how there are so many on this forum who rush out to buy SPR, criticize the PQ, but then say it was such an amazing movie on BD.

There are some transfers of movies which are simply not worth it on BD.

It sounds like there are some of us here who are addicted to buying BDs for the sake of buying them, and having to justify a crappy transfer afterwards.

GG i've read the last few pages of the SPR thread in the main forum and everyone seems to be quite pleased with the transfer. are you comparing SPR to The Blair Witch Project? lol

SPR has incredible detail on BD, it's a great picture and the sound is top notch.

I agree there are ppl out there that buy BDs just for the sake of buying them (perhaps to increase that library count in their profile?). I try to keep quality titles in mine. i'm actually getting rid of 10 or so because I never see myself watching them again.

anyway...not sure where your comment comes from, ppl complaining about PQ but going on about how awesome it is, examples?

Believe me, Saving Private Ryan is NOT The Blair Witch Project, nor was it filmed at all similar to it. Just because there's a certain stylistic approach, in this case similar to a WW2 documentary, it doesn't mean there's going to be less resolution. Those who are spouting a crappy transfer are few and far between. As usual, people only want to listen to the negative ones. Negativity doesn't necessarily equate to the truth. If the upgrade isn't worth it for you, fair enough. I'm certainly not going to tell anyone how to spend their money.

This type of remark is just plain wrong in regards to SPR. There's certainly going to be some films that appear to make little difference in HD, but I assure you, SPR is not one of them.

I always find it odd how there's this stigma with grainy and/or older films that make people think they can't look as good in HD. I guess I just assume that because were on a Blu-ray specific forum, people would know what they're talking about.

Spielberg LOVES grain... he simply loves working with film. Always has, always will. He's said before that he would never work with digital, whereas his buddy George Lucas is always trying to get him to make the switch.

My comments were mainly directed at comments saying that both SPR and MINORITY REPORT were supposed to be grainy. I don't personally believe it to be so.

I'm not even going to bother explaining. Write this same sentence at AVS and let them do the dirty work, lol. All I can say is, you're very misinformed about this.

i understand the need for grain in certain films to provide grit and environment.. however its a personal preference. some people like it and others dont. personally, i agree with greg in the fact i wouldnt have enjoyed the transfers on these movies better if they had less grain, having said that.. if you enjoy lots of it thats your view. no sense in jumping all over somebody simply bcuz of their opinion.

I think he was just implying that Spielberg didn't intend for grain in his movies. Which would be wrong because it's a preference of Spielberg to give his movies that "real, gritty feeling".

That is correct, Spielberg did say that on several occasions.
