I understand why some want all on one disc, seperate encodes, one encode...but for me, I'd love to have two discs. I also have no problem with my Cloudy Blu-ray. I'm extremely happy that I waited and bought it. By the way, at work today (Best Buy) I set up the Sony 3D display. (The TV in my opinion flickers too much compared to the Samsung and Panasonic.) But the exciting part for me were the 3D trailers. Two 1080p 3D trailers for Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3. Both of which were advertised as coming soon to 3D Blu-ray. This is the first actual marketing materials I have seen stating they were coming. I assumed they were coming, but it doesn't say if these will be released in 2010, or next year. It doesn't even give a date. I stuck the Sony disc in on the Panasonic (my 3-D display of choice, and both looked astonishing.) I can't wait to see them. Disney blows me away with their 2-D work, and I'm sure the 3-D won't be any different! |

I got the movie on the first day. I've watched it in 3D several times and it looks fantastic. I've not tried watching it in 2D, as there isn't really any point if I can see it in 3D. But I'm kind of curious about it now, after reading this thread. I'll have to check it out to see what all the talk is about.
I hope Sony hurries up and gives a release date for the next two. Last edited by Lovemy3D; 07-05-2010 at 09:29 PM. |

I found this review of this release
I found this line of particular interest "Let’s start with the 2D version of the film. The encode size of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is definitely smaller, at least 9 GB smaller than the standard edition Blu-ray. However, when comparing the two Blu-ray releases I found no noticeable difference in quality." This should be yet another vindication of my Debunking 3D myths article I wrote. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is a 2.35 movie thus requires 25% less verticle resolution then a comparible 16x9 movie would and since its entirely digital it lacks any grain or other difficult to compress film elements and thus never needed the ultra high bitrate Sony gave the first 2D version. The 3D version of the movie is encoded at similar bitrates of the 2D only release and yet managed to not compromise quality. It goes to show that the attitude displayed by many on this forum that "lowering bitrates always hurts quality and there are no ways to compress many movie without hurting quality" is showed for the ridiculous falicy that it is. Though on the other hand since the 3D release doesn't use higher bitrates the lack of the audio commentary is pretty much completely inexcusible. Last edited by Jimmy Smith; 08-02-2010 at 01:44 AM. |

anyone else having trouble playing this on their regular Blu-ray player? The first one I had skipped, then I exchanged it at the store and this one skips as well. and more than the first!
So I'm wondering if this happens to anyone else or I just got 2 duds in a row. |

OK, I took my copy of CwaCoM up to a home entertainment shop because I knew that, if they had a 3D setup, they'd let me put my disc in and check it out. They, in fact, did have a 3D setup. It was a Samsung LED 3D TV and a Samsung 3D BD player (not sure the model numbers of either device). When I arrived, they were playing, what seemed to be, a BRAND NEW Disney 3D demo BD. It had clips from A Christmas Carol 3D, Looney Tunes cartoons in 3D, Alice in Wonderland 3D, A Nightmare Before Christmas 3D, etc. The demo disc was hosted by Timon and Pumbaa from The Lion King (of course in 3D). So, I knew that this setup was able to play 3D just fine.
When I put in the CwaCoM disc, the menu loaded, I hit enter to select the "Play Movie" option. Then I had the choice of 3D or 2D. Of course, I chose 3D and I was given the same message that I get on my all 2D setup at home. It would not play in 3D. I tried it many times and it did not work. I asked if I could check to see if the firmware was the latest and they did not mind. So, I checked it and it was not the latest. So, I upgraded the Samsung BD player to the latest firmware. STILL, the movie would not play in 3D. It seems that the compatibility of 3D is still very much in its infancy. I was REALLY hoping that, as long as you have a 3D capable BD player and 3D capable TV, everything would automatically work. Not so. I just hope all of the 3D movies will work with the Oppo BDP-93 and Panasonic plasma combination because I don't need the headache of some movies working and some movies not working and waiting for firmware to fix things, blah blah blah. ![]() The dealer that I went to said that they don't even recommend 3D to people because it's so volatile right now and not even guaranteed to work. They even mentioned that the Monsters vs. Aliens 3D BD wouldn't play in 2D on a regular 2D BD player. ![]() Thoughts? |

Honestly, I have a Samsung LED TV which is playing Cloudy on a PS3 and I have yet to notice a problem at all? It plays all of the 3D content just fine.
