8K is total overkill, you can't even tell the difference unless your eyes are a millimeter from the screen. If they actually start producing 8K physical media I will eat any number of hats.

Ah, I see. I don't have knowledge regarding these technical aspects, so, did not know. Thank you.

My one note is DO NOT buy a cheap 4K TV. The picture looks like garbage. Save up for a nice OLED if it's at all possible. If not, wait until they get cheaper. Also, if you can afford to buy a bigger low quality 4K TV of a smaller high quality one, like an OLED, go for quality over size. I bought a significantly smaller TV than the huge cheap 4K TVs in order to get an OLED.

Trust me, once you see a good 4K disc on a good 4K TV, you'll feel like you're Dorothy stepping into the Technicolor world of Oz.

My collection is cataloged here, I update it constantly, it's viewable in my profile.
This is great advice. I bought a Sony 4K LCD TV at the end of 2018 for £650 and the picture quality was garbage. Smearing blacks and greys and if you dusted the screen even a smidge too hard in one place it affected the picture quality so you'd have to try and iron it out by dusting gently again (seriously). Upgraded to a Sony 48-inch OLED at the beginning of 2022 for a grand and it's amazing.

Ah, excellent. I have a price that I can target. £1000 is still very expensive but I was fearing I'd have to spend significantly more.

Would you be able to share the exact model you purchased, please? Perhaps a link?

Sony Bravia KD48A9 (2020) OLED HDR 4K Ultra HD Smart Android TV

Turns out it cost me £1,100 from John Lewis - looks like there might be a newer model now.

Excellent, thank you! I like John Lewis as they provide 2-year guarantees on electrical goods.

I think I may even stick with the older model, since it's been tried and tested for a while.

Having received this yesterday we watched it last night not having seen it since it was first released in cinemas.

Still as effective and brilliant as it was all those years ago. Needles to say the transfer is excellent. Meant to watch the 4K disc but actually watched the Blu Ray - with a TV that is only 54 inches I generally can't tell the difference.

I'll sell off my old Studio Canal disc - popped it in the machine today and whilst it was a nice transfer the new one is far superior.

So what's the picture quality like on the 4k disk, worth the upgrade?

Just be aware that, per the featurette on the UHD, the restoration is really a total reconstruction of the film.

The movie was edited digitally at 1080p in 2001/2002. The 2K version used in 2002 to create the 35mm prints was an upscale of the 1080p master. The old SC 1080p BDs are actually a fair approximation of how the finished film looked, for better or worse.

In order to bring the film into the modern digital age, the DP oversaw a total reconstruction of the movie. They rescanned all the 35mm footage at 6K. They re-did all post-production on the movie at 4K.

There are some caveats that make the new master uneven:

- some effects shots were composited digitally, with the original low-res 2002 effects placed atop the new 6K scan, making the effects stand out quite a bit
- some effects shots were entirely redone in 2022
- certain entire shots in the movie couldn't be found among the 35mm negatives, and they had to use the original 1080p master for those shots, and upscale them
- the onscreen titles were all redone digitally
- lots and lots of little flaws were digitally fixed, they go into this on the featurette
- because of the inconsistency of elements used, the DP had them digitally degrain all the 35mm material and then digitally regrain the entire movie, so it would look consistent.

The movie definitely looks consistent, but it does not look like a motion picture shot on 35mm film in 2001.

This is BY FAR the best the film has ever looked, with the most detail and the most control over the color timing and such. However, it is a new beast, it is not the original 2002 version of the film.

Thanks for the info very interesting, with the missing negatives and the way the film was shot i imagine that means this will be about as good as this film will look on disk. I have decided to go for it though, great film.

I just came upon the new UHD, and being one of my all-time favorite movies I am extremely excited to get it. I have the SC and US Blu-rays but the caps-a-holic comps are super!
Thanks to James Luckard for the totally unexpected detailed work information that has been done on the film- and with his caveats, I still think it will be a revelation projected at 120".
Can't wait to get it! cheers

So, how is the picture and audio quality on this....and why has this popular movie on 4K no reviews online anywhere?

Region B titles are regularly reviewed on this site. It does seem odd this hasn't been yet.
