I'm getting really worried this is going to be the theatrical cut. The director's is by far the better version of Dances With Wolves and Amazon still lists the running time as 185 minutes.

The theatrical cut is by far the better version. Kevin Costner hismelf told Entertainment Weekly that the extended cut was the studio's idea and that he had minimal involvement with it. The extended cut is nice to see once for the deleted scenes, but they weaken the film as a whole -- in the extended cut, the audience is always ahead of Dunbar, learning many secrets and mysteries before the main character. In the theatrical version, we rarely know more than Dunbar knows, and as such, it is a far more involving and personal experience. For instance, in the extended edition, we see Stands With a Fist learn of her husband's demise before she attempts suicide and is saved by Dunbar. Well, the problem with this is that we learn of the existence of the character and her surprising background before Dunbar does. In the theatrical version, we don't meet her until Dunbar comes across her on the plains.

I'm worried the disc is going to be extended-only, making us wait for yet another release in the years to come. No theatrical, no sale.

There's absolutely no reason for this to not have both versions.

Never thought of that. Very good point. I myself have never seen the "Extended" cut. But I will still purchase this.

I must.

Remember how Dances With Wolves won 7 Oscars and Goodfellas got only 1? Yeah, the world is a messed up place.

Well, stop worrying. You do know that they've officially announced the extended cut here?

I agree. There is no reason they shouldn't offer the theatrical cut via seamless branching.

Well he can't think that the extended version is bad since the dir. cut is about 10min longer than the extended. The dir. cut is the best cut!

Doesn't the UK release have the Theatrical Cut? Possibly could make your own custom 2-Disc Edition if one is willing to import.

I agree. The theatrical cut is available this very moment if you want to import it.

I also agree, though, that a seamless branching edition with both cuts (if possible) would be ideal. I would find both cuts available in one release to be preferable.

I never got the DVD of this but I'm sure I'll love whichever cut it is that makes its way onto blu-ray in January.

Does it play on a U.S. blu-ray player? A Sony.

Compared to the German DTS-HD MA 7.1 audio the English track sounded totally flat and underwhelming within scenes like the stampeding buffalo and the fantastic John Barry music score.

As a quick fix I ended up taking the LFE from the German track and remaking a new English DTS-HD MA 7.1 track as the LFE contains no dialogue.

I wasn’t the only one with this problem but there was no mention of this on the dvdbeaver.com BD review, funny enough I don’t blame Kinowelt as much as you’d think, as it was released mainly for the German market and that German audio was fine, but as a consequence I’ll never trust any Blu-ray review from that half-assed site dvdbeaver ever again
I was in Trier, Germany at the Saturn store last week with the movie in hand. I'm glad I put it back now after reading this, 30euro was a bit for a movie I was sure would play on my PS3.

Does anybody know if the US blu will have a DTS-HD MA 7.1 track???

IMO both cuts of the film are great, but I prefer the extended one. It's definitely long though and usually one I split over 2 nights.

I respectively disagree with that opinion. For me, once I saw the extended cut I could never again watch the shorter cut of Dances With Wolves. It feels so watered down after seeing the superior longer cut of the film. With the extended cut everything is better in my eyes, and the character development really is where I noticed the excellence of the longer cut.

Who the hell would want to import it? Besides, the theatrical cut in this case is profoundly inferior.

Ditto. The extended cut fleshes things out a lot better than the theatrical version.

You get a lot more detail and room to breathe for the film and the characters.

I would really like to see both cuts on the release. Is there any way to encourage seamless branching this far along into production?

It could be a space issue. Given the length of the film. Especially if they retain all of the previous extras.
