Shaw Brothers Founder Sir Run Run Shaw Has Died

Quote:
Sir Run Run Shaw, one of the most influential figures in the history of Hong Kong's entertainment industry, has passed away, local media is reporting this morning. The companies that he founded, Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) and Television Broadcasting (TVB) Limited, have produced countless film and television classics and helped launched the careers of numerous filmmakers, actors and actresses.

Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) Studio was founded in 1957, and quickly became the largest movie production company in the city. Over a number of decades, it has produced close to 1,000 movies. Key directors of the company included King Hu, Lau Kar Leung, Chang Cheh and Li Han Hsiang. Numerous wushu classics were produced and many of the studio's actors and actresses became celebrities. Some of the company's most famous films include Come Drink With Me, The One Armed Swordsman, Five Deadly Venoms, The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin and Eight Diagram Pole Fighter.

TVB Broadcasting Limited was established in 1967 and remains Hong Kong's largest television broadcasting company. TVB has helped launched the careers of many of today's superstars including Chow Yun Fat, Stephen Chow, Andy Lau and Tony Leung Chiu Wai.

Sir Shaw passed away at his home earlier this morning. He was 106.

I honestly thought that he would out live me. Crap. Of course, not long after he retired.

I'd love Come Drink with Me too, maybe there will be an HK release soon.
Its a shame the old HK DVD was non anamorphic, and while the DD looks lovely, the subtitles are shit.

I'd just like to see subbed releases of any Shaw Brothers film really. Japan seems to be the only country adamant in getting them out these days, though they're not interested in subbing them.
Hong Kong or even Dragon Dynasty () in the US haven't released anything in ages.

Can anyone confirm whether Five Deadly Venoms or any other US Shaw Bros. Blu-rays play correctly in 24fps? I avoided 36th Chamber because it appears to be a 25fps PAL speedup converted to 1080i 29.97fps. The listed runtime for Five Deadly Venoms of 97 minutes would seem to indicate that it is a PAL speedup as well (the DVD was 101 minutes), though it is a 1080p transfer.

FIVE DEADLY VENOMS is true 1080p. I have it and it looks quite excellent. 36TH CHAMBER was an upconvert from the previous DVD release (though on a good note, all 3 36TH CHAMBER films have been released in true 1080p in both France and I believe Germany [no english audio though that I know of]).

Pretty sure that HEROES TWO, FIVE ELEMENT NINJAS, THE DEADLY DUO and OPIUM & THE KUNG FU MASTER are all true 1080p as well.

Interesting, thanks for the info, people. Time to buy some Shaw Blus... On that subject, I just found something posted by Celestial Pictures' Shaw Brothers Universe Film Library official Facebook page on February 23rd:

For Blu ray, we are still working with our distributors. Hopefully, we could have 10 titles available in 2014.

It looks like Tokyo Shock's releases of Deadly Duo and Heroes Two are back in print, slipcovers and all.

Lots of new releases in Germany and Japan of Shaw Brothers classics but no English friendly versions anywhere...looks like were screwed as no new releases on the horizon..
