For those who didn't realize before it shipped that it was unlikely that most PS3 owners would be buying movies for it like standalone owners do, all you have to do is look at the number of PS3s sold in the US (or NA) and then look at the sales figures for Blu-ray discs. I never expected "most", but as I said last year, if it could provide a 20% effective rate that would be significant to the war. And the rate does look like it is likely in the 20% to 25% range or so, and it has obviously been significant given the way Blu-ray has led for software sales, even while the number of standalone HD DVD players plus XBOX360 add-ons has probably been over twice the number of standalone Blu-ray players for quite a while.

People who work for the studios making decisions should be smart enough to know that counting the PS3 at 100% makes no sense, just as counting it at 0% makes no sense. Ken Graffeo may spin this in public, but I think he is a smart enough guy to know that the PS3 does matter. For HD DVD to win it doesn't just have to beat the standalones on the Blu-ray side, it has to beat the standalones plus the PS3s.

And as I've mentioned elsewhere, there is a trick or mistake that some people use. What they do is claim that in the long run it is the standalones that matter, so therefore it is the ratios for standalones that we should look at now. Some will be tricked by that since in some ways it sounds logical, but it isn't. What these people generally do is claim that the PS3 effect will go down as far as selling software compared to what standalones will do and that way that can discount the PS3 effect going forward. But the trick is that they only apply it to the side they want to discount. To be logical they also need to apply the fact that some people use the PS3 basically as a standalone to discount the current standalone ratios too. That is, one of the reasons that HD DVD leads in standalone ratio is because many people who want a player choose the PS3 instead of getting a player on the Blu-ray side that can't do as much as the PS3 can. That way those who want to spin can play the trick of counting those people as zero in order to claim that HD DVD is leading for hardware sales. Basically, the "but things will be different in the future" needs to be applied to both sides instead of that trick or mistake of only applying to the side they want to look worse.

If HD DVD fans truly believe that all that matters is standalone ratio then they should rejoice that Sony is coming out with a lower priced PS3, since that should actually get some people to buy a PS3 instead of a Blu-ray standalone player, even if they will buy just as many Blu-ray movies. But it would be pretty ignorant if those HD DVD fans think more people buying Blu-ray movies means HD DVD is doing, as long as the standalone ratio is getting better for them. They should want Microsoft to stop selling the XBOX360 add-on in order to help the standalone HD DVD sales, if they believe that.

I know I have. I bought my PS3 to play games. Then I bought an HD TV, my wife got me Pirates on BD and I keep buying more. Once you start you become addicted. And with lots of great BD's coming out by X-mas my collection will just contunue to grow.

After being very happy with the PS3 quality we went out and bought a Sony T.V.

Go figure.

I bought my ps3 strickly for games but after looking into what the heck blu-ray was (I was clueless about HD)I got a moive for the heck of it and to my amazment I fell in love with watching movies just like a kid. Now my ps3 is much much more of a movie player than anything else. Blu-ray movies are easily my #1 hobby now and I find myself buying them all the damn time. On top of that my fav day of the week is now tuesday its like xmas everyweek

I got my PS3 in December for no other reason than to play games. I did not even know about BLU RAY. I even threw away that movie gift certificate that came with the PS3. Since then, i've learned about BLU RAY, bought a High Def TV and bought some BLU movies (not alot, but some). I never was a big movie purchaser. I am prof that BLU RAY was a trogan horse as far as the PS3 goes. Im sure that I am not the only one. Why have all of the PS3 BLU Power and waist it on a SD TV

There is a BIG reason Blu-ray discs are outselling HD DVD discs 2+:1 for the year--that BIG reason being the PS3. Otherwise, if you'd like to simply discount the PS3 as a Blu-ray player, Blu-ray's attach rate smokes HD DVD considering they've (Blu-ray) sold close to an equal amount of standalones as HD DVD and have a 2+:1 lead in disc sales. See how easy it is to spin data there chief?
So what he was really saying is those small number of dedicated PS3 blu-ray users are responsible for overtaking HD-DVD's one year lead on the market - in a few months - and sustain a 2 to 1 lead ever since - geez what's going to happen as all those PS3 gamers start jumping into blu-ray as well...It's going to be a big holiday for HDTV's - looking for more content to play on them and there is the PS3 already sitting there..no extra purchase needed..lowering the barrier to entry I think it's called.

A I see we have evidence of that already in a previous post.
