Agree with ya 200%. The thing is that switching from VHS, VCD, LD etc to DVD only required a DVD player while from DVD to BD requires a little more cost like HD TVs, Sound systems etc but what I think is that its just a matter of time and BD will dominate the market. Its still a new format so it will take time but yes it will be on top for sure. I have no doubts whatsoever.

(Hello all, I'm new to the forum. A little background...I used to work for kodak scanning and processing film. I'm currently a camera operator for feature films in new Orleans)

So guys, what happens when they start releasing 4k physical media? 8k?
RED is already making a 4k Project for the open market, not just theaters. The technology is there.
What are you gonna do? Re buy all your precious blu rays in 4k? I mean, you understand that blu ray still does not match the quality of 35mm scanned at full quality?...the max res that you can scan 35mm at, without some kind of distortion or sampling, is 4k. And with 70mm IMAX film, 8k. And do you think Sony is going to let that opportunity go to waste? Can you imagine the ads..."Get the full quality of 35mm film right in your home!"

Sony is going to milk blu ray until 4k is cheap enough to sell to consumers. Then all your blu rays are gonna look like DVDs.

And also, the last 3 movies I operated on were shot at 5K on the Red Epic...25% higher resolution than 35mm film.

The only thing that would convince me to go with UV is if they promised to auto update our movie files when the next tech comes out. Like future proofing. Either way, I can't justify dropping $15-$30 on blu rays now...just to re-buy them years later like we all did with DVD. Sony has this market cornered and right where they want us.

It wasn't the picture that moved me to BD...it was the sound, 720p was fine with me - I got a 1080p Tv (with 1080p content) and noticed the difference but - I wasn't in awe like I was with sound.

Until we start getting like 120" tv's there are very few people who are going to be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 4k, and even less who will care enough to replace their entire collection again.

I don't get your point. Did you drop money on DVD? VHS? what happens when there will be 4K and what if after that there is 8K? There will always be something better in the future. Even if it is not just extra resolution (maybe after 8k there will be lossless video in 8k, or more colours....). What are you going to do? not watch movies ever again? only watch the few you have already bought on DVD (after all if you don't want to spend on BD because there might be better quality down the road why would you spend it on DVD when there is better quality right now) until your DVD player brakes?

I think there are people that care about quality and care about movies and if someone cares then the choice is simple enjoy the best tech that is available while waiting for something better. And if you don’t care then the choice is equally simple stick with the old crap until you can’t anymore.
