Well, remember that HD-DVD kept the same recording depth and suface coating (i.e., none) as DVD for cost reasons (ease of converting the manufacturing lines). That is the only reason why HD-DVD has the physical structure that it does.

Given that there are more than 3 times more data densely packed on the same material, it stands to reason that it will be much more prone to miniscule defects and thin layers of oil or whatever on the surface. Hence, the washing and boiling.

How this simple point got past any engineer with a degree in material science or opticals or electrical engineering...I have no idea....

I, I don't even know what to say to this. THEY BOIL THEIR DISCS TO MAKE THEM WORK CORRECTLY? What's next? Fabric softener sheets for their lasers? WTF?!! Are they buying cutting edge technology or a new shirt?!

OK, if (and I DO mean "IF") I was ever on the fence before, I have clearly jumped to the blu side... and now running in the opposite direction from DUD...

Oh, and on the subject of the "attacks" on the OP from AVS, I think it's indicative of why Blu supporters are growing by leaps and bounds. I've noticed that whenever anyone reports a problem here, it's met with constructive ideas on how to fix the problem and follow up questions for clarification, not insults and accusations. Just an observation...

I love it when the mention the boil method.

I wish more HD DUD-ers knew about it. For a whle they tried to hide it but it works better than anything else.

I read about a guy that had a party and tried to watch knocked up only to have problem after problem and finally watched the SDVD side just to be able to see the movie.

If he only knew to boil the disc such a scene may have not happened.

yup thats right, boil it..like an egg...i have no idea why, and god only knows what the person who discovered that boiling made them work was thinking..
my understanding is that some type of coating/film is applied (on purpose or not) during replication and that boiling it (hot water) removes it.
