Default Eyes Wide Shut: Help

In my quest to ensure WB goes blu, I've recently purchased Eyes Wide Shut (among about 6 other WB titles in the last week). Anyway, before I watch it, I wanted to know some thoughts on the meaning of the film. The first time I saw it I was somewhat confused as to the message and what the film was really about. I know Kubrick died before it was completed, but do you think this really affected the story and filming decisions to the detriment of the film?

What is this movie about? I'd really like to watch it again and enjoy it more this time and I'm hoping someone will have some good insight as to its meaning that will inspire me to look deeper as I view it for my second time.

Thanks.

Kubrick died right before the release of the film, but he did complete it.

Ah, I did not know that. So his death should have had little if any impact on the film. Then, is there anyone out there who liked the movie? Why?

I personally love the film. When in film school, I took a Kubrick class and I love every one of his films. Cant wait for Barry Lyndon to be released on Blu. As far as Eyes Wide Shut, it is really about relationship between a man and wife. The husband goes out on this sexual adventure following his wife's confession of contemplating an affair. It can be argued that it is all a dream, but it really is about thier relationship as well as the influence of wealth on society.

In a nutshell its about relationships in the backdrop of murder and secret societies. But at its core, its all about human relationships especially seen through Cruise's and Kidman's characters. Try and dig deeper.

I was hoping for some more input, but thanks for the responses. I'm starting the movie now. Even if it's not stellar, it's a blu-ray. I'm gonna love it either way!

I saw an article about R. Lee Ermey who played the drill instructor in "Full Metal Jacket" who said he spoke to Kubrick 2 weeks before his death and said that the film was a POS. That Cruise and Kidman were calling the shots. I read in wiki that the executive producer denied it and had some choice words for Ermey.

I didn't like the film that much unfortunately, I wish he had shot the film in NYC where he was from. It looked like someone other than Kubrick had a hand in it. But I cant say for a fact that it is true. Just my opinion.

I believe it. The movie is definetly the weakest of all of Kubrick's films. I doubt that I will pick it up on Blu. I have it on DVD. GIVE ME BARRY LYNDON and DR. STRANGELOVE on Blu!

I have to say, "wow". It was an artful work. Every shot had classic Kubrick framing, symmetry, and composition. Smooth following tracking shots of the primary. Really great stuff. The story took some very interesting turns and was fun to watch develop. It's slow. It's slow to develop, takes its time to build the characters, and grows in suspense. Even Spielberg says of Kubrick that you have to see his films many times for them to set in. He said he didn't much care for the Shining after he first saw it, but now, 25 viewings later, its one of his favorite films. I would have to agree that the 2nd time viewing Eyes Wide Shut I was more able to appreciate the film. I'm proud to have it in my collection and will be viewing it many more times in the years to come.

God bless, Stanley. And thanks.

It's about relationships from a very adult perspective. It doesn't have any of the romantic artifice we love to see in movies but we know isn't always reality, or reality much of the time. It takes a pragmatic approach to love and lust, and infidelity and jealousy as mentioned above. The romantic notion that just because we love someone, we are to be filled with intense guilt if we look at someone else lustfully, or have fantasies about someone other than our loved one, isn't realistic. It is against our nature; yet the movie is a powerful statement on monogamy and romantic love. Despite the famous scenes, I never felt the movie advocated promiscuity or infedility. It is a mature essay on things many of us can't deal with fully because of cultural and societal pressure and repression. Love and lust, and all the feelings and drives that come with it, are far more complex than many of want to believe or confront in the relationships that mean the most to us. I think Kubrick is trying to say that it would be much healthier if we did.

Arrow Eyes Wide Shut. How to Switch Between Rated and Unrated Versions on BD.

I just received the Stanley Kubrick film "Eyes Wide Shut" on Blu-ray today. The package indicates that the film on this disc is "selectable in both rated and ... unrated versions." However, when I insert and play the disc on my Playstation 3, I can't find any place that gives me an option to play one or the other. It just plays what appears to be the R-rated version. The menus don't indicate any choices between different versions of the film either. How can I select the other version?

Also, just an observation: the film, visually, looks a bit soft on this BD release. This may be due in part to the way it was originally shot, but other BD releases I have, such as "2001: A Space Odyssey," tend to look sharper. Anyone else feel the same way?

Hey,

I'm sorry to tell you but the Eyes Wide Shut BD has only the UNRATED edition. The film was shot using diffuse lenses hence the softness of the image. I like the way it looks to be honest, and the soundtrack it's great!

Dave

PS.- Blu has won!!!

Yeah, although it was advertised, it's not actually an option. Lame I know.

But the only difference is the robed CGI figures. Check it out here.

Also it looks the way it was filmed which can come off as soft.

Okay. Thanks for clearing that up. Warner really needs to change that line about the choice in versions. It's false advertising.

I figured it was the way it was shot. I've seen the film only once (when it was originally released in theaters) and I'd forgotten that it had that quality. I actually like the way it looks; it's just different from the ultra-sharp lines I usually see on BDs.

They've revised the package... with a "correction" sticker, or a new case insert without the error on the back. (Not sure which one.) It'll be a while before the old package is cycled through retail; this isn't exactly a best seller.

Yeah, if you go to Amazon you can see they've even put a little warning up about it.

*Edit* They've sold out so the message is gone.
