Same. It's just intuition so obviously it may not mean anything at all, but that trailer got a reaction out of me I thought wasn't possible anymore. The trailers for Prometheus, Godzilla, the Hobbit trilogy, Jurassic World, etc. - all new installments in franchises I love - while they got me excited it wasn't anywhere near what I felt while watching the teaser for The Force Awakens. I have a really, really good feeling about this movie.

While it's not such a big surprise, I think that's great news that Kenneth Branagh got the go to direct the third new Star Wars film. Would be cool to see him act in it too since he reminds me of Obi Wan.

io9 is reporting today that Joss Whedon is possibly the director of this.

I think that would be ALL WRONG personally. His tone and writing style would be much more suited to a standalone side story movie like Rogue One.

Umberto Gonzalez is saying that Whedon is being courted to direct a Star Wars movie, too.

I agree with you that he doesn't seem like a good fit for it. I don't think he's a super strong director, although Age of Ultron was a big improvement direction wise after The Avengers. Maybe a spinoff, but certainly not a main installment.

I don't know. After butting heads with Disney/Marvel for Age of Ultron - he described the making of it as "a nightmare," he'd most likely encounter the same problems with Lucasfilm. Star Wars is big, like Marvel. There's not going to be much more freedom there.

There's going to be more freedom at Lucasfilm than at Marvel. He'll really only answer to Kennedy at Lucasfilm, where as at Marvel, he and Feige answer to quite a few other people higher up...Therein lies the problem. He likes Feige, and most of the Marvel folk, but Ike and the creative board are very restrictive. That's the biggest problem.

But I think Whedon could do a Star Wars film, but he'd probably be more suited for an Anthology film, not one of the normal saga films. Still think Bird should do Episode IX.

Don't get me wrong, I love me some Whedon, but like you I'd much rather have Bird for a saga film. He's just a better filmmaker.

While true that Whedon or any director Lucasfilm hires, would really only answer to Kathleen Kennedy within Lucasfilm; she in turn reports to The Walt Disney Studios chairman, Alan Horn. Meaning, Horn could overrule decision(s) made by or approved by Kennedy or anyone at Lucasfilm that has the authority to make or approve decision(s).

Hot off his massive success on Jurassic World , super hot director Colin Trevorrow has bagged his next gig.

Today at the Star Wars Comic Con panel, Lucasfilm will bring out Colin Trevorrow onto the stage at Hall H to announce him as the next director of Star Wars: Episode 9!

JJ Abrams directed Episode 7, Rian Johnson got Episode 8, and now Colin Trevorrow got Episode 9. The trilogy is complete.

Hot choice. Jurassic World has grossed a $1.4 billion dollars around the world and still climbing.

Jurassic World was pretty average at best. This will probably be the worst of the trilogy.

They're trusting Trevorrow with the last SW film of this trilogy?

JW wasn't even the one of the best directed films of the year.

"Oh, it made tons of money? Then he HAS TO be a good director, right?"
*clueless board members all nod*

Seriously, Brad Bird said that he passed on Episode 7 because of Tomorrowland. What's his excuse this time? Or perhaps those same board members were like...

"Oh, that Bird guy? Nah, his latest film totally flopped! He's a hack!"
*clueless board members all nod*

Not sure about this. Personally I would prefer someone else. I mean, it's the conclusion of the whole 9-episode saga.

Wow. This is a terrible and uninspired choice.

Thought his work on Jurassic World was pretty run of the mill directing wise, and the screenplay that he co-wrote was even worse. Cliche-ridden and filled with dumb, bland, and unlikeable characters.

So far both directors for Eps 7-8 have worked on the screenplays and I expect the same to happen here. Ugh.

And as the previous poster said, this is supposed to be the last episode of the saga. It deserves a lot better.

For what it's worth, Scott Derrickson (director of Doctor Strange) posted this on Twitter about half an hour ago:

I don't know if that's in regards to the Star Wars IX director news, or if it's regarding Doctor Strange rumors, but it being posted so soon after Umberto Gonzalez dropped that article made me consider this tweet is possibly about the Trevorrow news.

Guess we'll find out today. I figure Gonzalez wouldn't have posted such big news if it wasn't a sure thing.

I have absolutely no problems with him getting the gig. He proved he could handle a big budget movie, which was only his second film, and proved that he can hang with whatever is thrown at him.

Bottom line... he would not have gotten this job if they had any doubts that he couldn't do it.
