It has no advantage, but it is actually more reliable. SSDs have no moving parts and are purely digital, where as discs require the moving parts of an optical drive. The problem is that SSDs cost much more to make due to being much smaller.

yeah, the failure rate of flash/ssd based media is exponentially higher than a properly pressed disc.

Sure. And here's another story, from 2003, from another famous prophet, PC World, which has been seeing the death of DVD since...2000.

Very interesting to see how agenda writers keep on predicting. PC World's archives are full of these.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/112279/article.html

And yet in 2012 Billboard reports that a supposedly dead medium outpaced digital's sales growth in the music industry:
http://www.billboard.com/biz/article...-healthy-boost

Quote:
Vinyl album sales actually managed to outpace digital's sales growth, increasing by 17.7% to 4.55 million units. But that's still a meager 1.44% of all U.S. album sales in 2012.
More interesting data: "Vinyl Album Sales Soar in 2012"
http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle...1.html?refer=y

Businesswire:
http://www.businesswire.com/news/hom...ndustry-Report

Quote:
For the fifth consecutive year, more vinyl albums were purchased than any other year in the history of Nielsen SoundScan.

In 2012, vinyl album sales reached 4.6 million in sales, breaking the previous record of 3.9 million LP album sales in 2011.
And one more telling statistic from USA Today:
http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/m...sales/1843627/
Quote:
In the album format, digital jumped 6% in 2012, though fans still favor the physical version. Last year, 193 million CDs were sold vs. 118 million digital albums, according to Nielsen SoundScan's year-end data report. While album sales at digital services outpaced those at mass merchants, they were far exceeded by the combined sales of physical albums at all outlets.
Some facts.

I'm not arguing that, and although I mentioned hipsters jokingly, there is truth to it. The recent record sales for vinyl started in 2010 I believe. The last time vinyls sold that well was in 1991. People didn't all of a sudden realize that vinyl is good format to listen to and just buy vinyls in significantly larger numbers compared to previous years. I think it has more to do with the indie music/hipster music scene increasing in popularity.

Check out the bestselling vinyl albums for 2010:

Top Ten Vinyl Albums, 1/4/2010 - 1/2/2011
1. The Beatles Abbey Road (35,000)
2. Arcade Fire The Suburbs (18,800)
3. Black Keys Brothers (18,400)
4. Vampire Weekend Contra (15,000)
5. Michael Jackson Thriller (14,200)
6. The National High Violet (13,600)
7. Beach House Teen Dream (13,000)
8. Jimi Hendrix Experience Valleys of Neptune (11,400)
9. Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon (10,600)
10. the xx xx (10,200)

Aside from the obvious, perhaps perennial, vinyl favs like DSotM, Thriller, and The Beatles, the list is filled with indie/hipster bands (two of my fav. in fact: Arcade Fire, and The National). This isn't meant to downplay the format, but it's quite clear that many hipsters/indie band lovers enjoy buying vinyl and are the driving force here. You could still make the argument that they're doing it because they have a better understanding of audio, but they could also be buying it because it just happens to be the hip thing to do. I know plenty of indie lovers who just buy it because it's cool to buy vinyl, and not because of the audio characteristics you get from it.

I think only true collectors and movie buffs are the only ones who care about buying and owning a physical copy of a movie. Everyone else just wants to watch them, then forget them, and pull them out as an entertainment kick.

So I do believe that "internet is killing the video star". That's why I'm getting the movies I want now, so it doesn't become a pain later as it may be difficult to track them down. Think of it like this, the blu-rays we own now are going to be worth a lot more, future generations will want original copies of the movies they grew up with on a hard format.

Be happy we are in a time where we can posses some amazing movies of our era and are able to hold them in our hands. Screw you Digital! Oh yeah... and keep them mint.

I agree, vinyl has sounded better all along, and in the past few years it's become somewhat "trendy" to purchase and have vinyl. But whatever, as long as it keeps psychical media in the spotlight, i'm cool with trendy. But it's definitely more of a hipster thing than it is an audiophile thing lately.

Yeah, you're probably right about that. It would be one of the reasons the vinyl sales are doing well right now. Just pointing out that they do sound better than CDs, and audiophiles prefer them.

I like having physical media. So I will always get the Blu of my favorite movies. Yes I like digital copies too but I like having a disc on my shelf to watch any time.

I dont see it dying out. Sure, I use Netflix and Amazon Instant. But in the case of shows like breaking bad, I'd much rather buy them than watch them on netflix. Falling skies is available with amazon prime but I'm just going to go buy it at best buy

The bits in flash memory very slowly leak charge, and eventually (a decade or so) the data will start being corrupted. This doesn't affect your ability to read/write new data to it, mind you (though there's a limit to how many write cycles a flash cell can handle before the bits gets stuck), but it's not a very good technology for archival.

That's good to know and makes me relieved that all of my important stuff is backed up across multiple hard drives.

I definately agree that physical media will never die out no matter what the format. In the 60's I would buy a record I liked even though I could hear it on the radio (60's version of streaming). I wanted to have the record in my hand and play it when I wanted. The same goes for Blu-ray discs, I can stream a movie, and watch it, but I put a BD in my player and watch it, when, and as many times as I want, and the quality of the picture and sound for me is better.
I have been through many formats over the years, and find Blu-ray really the best. I doubt it will die any time soon, if ever. After all vinyl discs are making a comeback!
