Default Blu-ray Vs Streaming/downloading

Does anyone get upset when someone tells you bluray is a dying format, and that physical media will be a thing of the past???? A co-worker of mine is always telling me that streaming is the next thing, which I can see but it gets under my skin because I love having the actually media in my hands. Am I a dinosaur??? lol

No format lasts forever. I, in my life, have went from VHS to DVD, and not to Blu-ray. I have gotten rid of my VHS over the years, replacing those films with DVDs. I will not be replacing all of my DVDs with Blu-rays, though I have replaced some and will replace certain ones.

I can see into the future, and someone with a Pepper Potts avatar will be posting in this thread soon.

I prefer to own movies on Blu-ray, so that I can watch them whenever I want and own them for my shelf in the best quality possible.

Blu-ray will be the last physical format.. they will utilize it for 4k as they are doing right now with 3D

Laserdiscs had a 20 year run even though it was more of a niche format because it never gained mass appeal. But from 1979 to about 1998 movies were released in that format. Both DVD and bluray are so much more popular, I don't see the formats going away for quite some time.

It irks me but I would just tell her to STFU or do something gross every time she mentions it if it bothers you that much.

Her: man physical media is dying, digital is going to supplant it any day now.
You: Man, I'm dying from the case of explosive diarrhea I had this morning that left tread marks all over my tightie whities.
Her: Ewwwww. Then turns around and shuts up.

Exclamation Streaming...sucks!!!

I personally don't see physical media becoming obsolete, Nor do I see Blu-Ray becoming obsolete anytime soon. I can say that when Blu-Ray becomes obsolete, We will have a crazily awesome next media format in our hands. I hate streaming, It lags half the time & I want to actually own the movies or shows! If your internet goes on the blink, You're screwed! I will only buy physical media. STREAMING...NO THANKS!

Pretty much what I gonna say. Streaming is fine for casual movie or TV show watching. But like you said, you have to rely on a internet connection and servers. Who knows if internet providers years from now will be so generous with unlimited data and high bandwidth. Movies that I like a lot and have a personal connection to, I like to have a physical version of it. Plain and simple.

Exactly! I also have a very deep connection with quite a few movies and shows....Can't be without these gems on physical media!

I think there will always be physical media, because there will always be collectors. Some people prefer to own the object and have it sit on their bookshelves.

Maybe down the line when streaming ever does become the norm, I could still see the studios releasing very limited physical copies to stores. And once they are sold out you can only find them second hand or your stuck with the digital streaming copy. Kinda like the Disney vault but every studio will do it

I agree - its certainly my last physical format. Im not rebuying my movie collection again or any players. Nuh uh. No way. As far as Im concerned, the quality that one can achieve with even moderately decent gear at home is quite amazing. With higher-end gear, its absurdly awesome.

As for streaming? We love it - but only as a side dish for physical discs. Streaming works best for TV shows or things you just want to catch once and be done with it. Most owned films are for rewatching over and over.

YUP i totally agree also,, i have streamed my fair share of films,,and theres always problems,,bad quality, pixelation, "please wait while buffering" when half way through a film.

Much happier throwing in a BD and watching with glorious superior sound and visual quality.
Digital copies / streaming etc is fine if you're on the move, but in the confines of my home...its BD

I don't know that a new physical format will come along, but I don't see Blu-ray leaving. The day physical formats totally disappear is the day I ease up on my viewing habits. I'm not going to pay a rental fee for every movie just to stream and I'm not going to pay for 3 or 4 different streaming services in hopes they offer movies I want to see.

The people I find banging on at work about streaming nowadays aren't the ones who have ever bought films anyway - what they have found is a perfect replacement for Sky/Cable and renting and that's all it is; cable companies have far more to fear as who's going to bother with a dedicated film channel when you can pay one fee to Netflix and have access to thousands?

The couple of folk I know who collect films are just getting into bluray now. Late, I know.

If Bluray came out now, it would be dead in a year but as it is, it's had long enough to become established as the collectors format. It's not going anywhere for a loooong time.

You hit the nail on the head! Usually people bragging up streaming are people who care less about buying movies and shows. I can't stand not owning the movies and shows I LOVE!

I don't think physical media will ever disappear, but I do think the popularity of streaming and Digital Movies will actually keep Blu-Ray (and whatever future format) from being completely dominant like the DVD.

I don't think physical media will ever go away either, because there are a lot of people out there ,including myself, who just do not buy into all the downloading crap.

I like the physical thing, too. Right now Blu-ray gives me the best cinematic experience possible, so it wins. If one day digital media can give me the best experience possible, I'm afraid it will win me over.
