i enjoyed room 237. I particularly enjoyed the theory about Kubrick using the shining as a confession to faking the moon landing footage. another thing I really liked about this movie was that it shines a light on one of the greatest filmmakers of all time and how his work can influence so many people in different ways.

Movie Geeks United did a series about the films of Stanley Kubrick. Anyone who's familiar with that podcast pretty much knows what to expect from this documentary. Their show about the Shining is about 3 hours long and ends with interviews with people like Jay Weidner (Moon Landing), Bill Blakemore (Indian Genocide), Jeffrey Cocks (Holocaust) and John Fell Ryan (Forwards and Backwards). Host Jamie Duvall has stated he got a ton of hate mail. Mainly for the fact that they chose to interview Jay Weidner. It's amazing how up and arms people get when someone has an opposing opinion.
Like that podcast the point of this documentary isn't to provide definitive answers. It's to show how a film like The Shining that doesn't give you all the answers can invite such varied interpretations. Yes some of them are far fetch and of course the one that people think is the most far fetched is the Moon Landing one. When in actual fact that theory holds way more weight than the Minotaur and the forwards and backwards one. The forwards and backwards one is discredited based simply on the fact that there are two versions of the film (Three if you count the very first one with the hospital scene) I'm sure you could play any movie forwards and backwards and see strange coincidences. By the way I listened to the uncut interview with John Fell Ryan that Movie Geeks United did and boy is he annoying. The entire interview he giggles after every sentence. Back to Jay Weidner. If your one of those people who absolutely believes 100% that we went to the moon. Than you will be offended, if you believe it's all one big conspiracy than you'll be in agreement. Basically you take out of Room 237 what you brought in. It's not trying to change anyone's mind. I for one am fascinated by these different interpretations. I ordered a copy to hear MSTRMND's commentary. |

Apologies if this has been asked already, but I haven't seen The Shining in about a decade, and really want to check it out again and watch this as well. Would I be better off watching The Shining first, or this?
I plan on reading Doctor Sleep after. Thanks. |

Absolutely, 100% watch the actual film again before you watch this.

I had this in my Netflix queue, but I think I'm going to purchase it. I like The Shining, and I like hearing about conspriacy theories(no matter how whacked out they sound), so it stands to reason that I'll enjoy this. ![]() |

DOCTOR SLEEP is the sequel to Stephen King's novel THE SHINING, not Kubrick's film of it. There are massive and fundamental differences between the two (including characters and buildings that survive one but not the other) so, a viewing of the movie aside, it's critical that you read Stephen King's THE SHINING novel before undertaking DOCTOR SLEEP.

I think it depends very much whether you take it at face value. I mean, I have no doubt the participants believe in their own theories. I just don't think the director does. ROOM 237 is not structured as an argument to win somebody over (like the youtube videos some of the participants make). Instead it becomes sort of a love letter to the loonies, to Kubrick and indeed to film itself. It shows us how you really can twist and turn the facts and interpret them in any way that makes them fit into your own agenda - and that's one of the reasons film and fiction is so fantastic. Everybody will get something different out of it based on what they bring to the table themselves.
