The commentary track on the Blu-ray and its DVD counterpart are the same, but the 2003 Special Edition DVD had another commentary made up of interview sessions conducted for the old "Making of Sleeping Beauty" featurette (which didn't make it onto the Platinum, either, since it was replaced by a new documentary). If you've listened to the Peter Pan commentary, it's the exact same type of thing. A friend of mine likes to refer those as audio documentaries since they're basically talking head interviews without the visuals.

Honestly, I think it's time for them to move on from this "best of the best" release strategy they started with the Platinum Collection and I get the feeling that that's exactly what they will be doing upon the completion of the Diamond Editions.

Disney will always have collection titles, whether it be Gold or Platinum or Limited Edition or Diamond or Animated Classics or Masterpiece, but I think the singling out of a handful of titles will end soon.
Hmm. I'm not sure I would see them cut the Diamond line short. The best of the best strategy has worked for sales, but interesting thoughts.

Unless there's a really compelling reason to buy the movie again like a new and better transfer (which I don't see how that's possible since the current one is already excellent), or some kind of really great new bonus feature, I can't see double dipping on it.

If anything, I expect it to be more stripped down than the previous release. Disney has been gradually cheaping out more and more with their releases lately. There seem to be fewer bonus features than there used to be, they are stacking discs for any release with 3 or 4 discs, and they've almost completely stopped putting artwork on the discs (which I admit isn't the most important thing, but since it's a nice bonus that my existing edition already has).

This is great for anyone who missed out the last time around, but that's about it.

For those that don't want the DVD copy in a separate sleeve.

I actually wouldn't for this one. None of the Diamonds have been stacked, and Disney has only stacked DVD (except for WIR I think), not BD.

I've actually given that DVD and sleeve to a friend.

If it's the same exact transfer then I don't see any percs of double dipping. I can't imagine what else they could add to the special features.

I'll have to pass on this one. Happy for those who missed out on the last release, but this worries me because this release might delay 101 Dalmatians or Aladdin (if it's even in the diamond line).

I'm aware there are imports, but I'd prefer to keep the look of my Disney collection somewhat consistent.

I think the answer is right in the OP... "the theatrical release of Maleficent"

I understand, but Fall 2014 would have been a perfect time for Aladdin.

Exactly. If they re-release Sleeping Beauty it will probably still be a 3 disc set. Disney doesn't seem to stack until it's at least a 4 disc set.

Please read the OP of the Stacked Discs thread. Not all of them are sets with 3D discs.

Examples: Lincoln 4-disc, 2-movie collections (such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan, Pocahontas, etc.)

I for one, would like to see the re-release of this title. Missed out the first time. Now, if they would only re-release Fantasia.......

I did. Lincoln's packaging was not chosen by disney.

And again, those 2 movie collections only have the DVD stacked. I own them.

1) Disney handles distribution of DreamWorks II's movies in the U.S.

2) DVDs can get damaged easier than BDs. However, the 3D sets have had numerous instances of scratched discs. Either way, stacked DVDs or stacked BDs, is not optimal from a company that charges more for its movies than others in the business.

It's an overpriced OOP title that's now being replaced. No brainer arbitrage opportunity for anyone that makes a habit of selling or trading (rather than just 100% hoarding).

Sleeping Beauty over priced? I see it in the $15 range all the time.
