Pre-ordered from Diabolik so it shouldn't be long before mine arrives.
The Bluray is region B locked for anyone interested. |

Has anybody actually received their copy, and if so, could they comment on the quality of the scan used?
So far, I only found a user review on amazon.co.uk, and it's not good... "This is a wonderful film from my favourite director, and I was looking forward to see how 88 Films, a company that clearly loves these movies as much as we do, would handle it. I was especially happy to hear that the company had gone to great expense ordering a new remaster. Of course, this made my ultimate disappointment all the more acute. Firstly, this remaster uses a French print which appears a little soft. Add to that the fact the image displays horrendous grain for much of the runtime to the point where some scenes look like they're taking place in a dust storm. The image improves at around the 55 minute mark, but by then it's too late. If you own the German e-m-s dvd release of this movie, stick with it. I certainly will, as it remains the best version available. I doubt I'll watch the 88 release ever again" Here's hoping the review is just plain wrong, but it looks like the reviewer knows what he's talking about... ![]() |

Looks lovely to me.
Yes, it's very grainy, but it's colourful, rich and detailed. It's certainly nothing like what I'd describe as soft. More importantly, while it remains a film that takes place in the dark a lot, you can actually see what's going on unlike the crushed and blue-washed older release. It helps the packaging prepares you in what to expect - it says "4K scan of archive print materials". So it's clearly not OCN levels of contrast range, but it's a good handling of what they have to work with. Last edited by oddbox83; 03-27-2023 at 02:31 PM. |

My experience of the EMS DVD is limited to caps - I want to say it's somewhere between the two through sheer gut feeling. The dusk-set scenes now seem warmer with more purples and oranges rather than all day for night despite a setting sun in the background.
So it's still rather dark in places, but absolutely not crushed and blanket-tinted like the old Blu. The movie now starts at daytime and progresses through dusk into night, mirroring the story descending into darkness. Does that sound correct for the film based on the EMS DVD? You absolutely get the full effect of Bava's lighting, especially the stylistic shots when Lee moves between different gels towards camera. Last edited by oddbox83; 03-27-2023 at 04:40 PM. |
