Not of the ones owned (or formerly owned) by Sony.
If we're talking actual good films in the series overall, that'd essentially just be the original Gojira and GMK, with runner up status to Gojira '84. Son of Godzilla is a very fine kids movie, too. The rest are fun and entertaining (well, mostly), but largely in a kitsch way. The 90s Gamera trilogy roundly puts all of them combined to shame. |

Terror of Mechagodzilla, Godzilla vs. Mothra and Godzilla vs. Destroyah are my top 3 (outside of the original which we all love).
I haven't seen it but this statement strikes me as outrageous hyperbole. |

In my opinion, for a Godzilla move to potentially be great, it needs to either
1) Be directed by Ishiro Honda 2) Be scored by Akira Ifukube Preferably both. Although neither is necessarily a guarantee of greatness. And Showa era had the best-looking King Ghidorah. |

No, that's actually a pretty common opinion and isn't very hyperbolic. I wouldn't totally agree with it but he's MOSTLY right. The new Gamera trilogy is better than all of the modern Godzilla movies by a substantial margin, especially the second and third. I definitely think the old gamera movies are vastly inferior to even the worst Godzilla movie, but the 90s trilogy is really great stuff. The director of them went on to do GMK and I don't think that one measured up to his Gamera movies (the whole subplot with the old man ghost brought it down several notches, it did however have the best depiction of Godzilla since the 54 one), but it does give you an idea of what his approach was compared to the other Godzilla movies of the time since that one is very distinctly different from the others. I'd still say that a couple of the old Godzilla movies are higher in quality (well, Godzilla Vs Mothra 64 anyway) and a lot of them are more entertaining to me and I'll always prefer Godzilla critters to Gamera ones, but those three movies really should be at the top of your list to see if you like Godzilla movies, especially any of the more recent ones like Destroyah.

I was really disappointed by the Yonggary reboot, though. it was set in the U.S., with American actors, and it went by a different named (I don't remember it right off the top of my head Edit: Reptilian). I didn't realize it was the Yonggary reboot until I heard someone in the movie mention it by name. Last edited by CraigThom; 03-02-2014 at 03:37 PM. |
