Dammit, no GMK, the only legitimately "good" (as in being a good movie and not just a good Godzilla movie, ha) one of the bunch.

You don't think any of the other 27 films are good movies?

Regardless, May 6th will be a big day for Godzilla fans. All the Sony releases and the three Kraken releases.

That's weird because I didn't think Giant Monsters All-Out Attack was anything special.

Not of the ones owned (or formerly owned) by Sony.

If we're talking actual good films in the series overall, that'd essentially just be the original Gojira and GMK, with runner up status to Gojira '84. Son of Godzilla is a very fine kids movie, too. The rest are fun and entertaining (well, mostly), but largely in a kitsch way.

The 90s Gamera trilogy roundly puts all of them combined to shame.

Terror of Mechagodzilla, Godzilla vs. Mothra and Godzilla vs. Destroyah are my top 3 (outside of the original which we all love).

I haven't seen it but this statement strikes me as outrageous hyperbole.

In my opinion, for a Godzilla move to potentially be great, it needs to either

1) Be directed by Ishiro Honda

2) Be scored by Akira Ifukube

Preferably both. Although neither is necessarily a guarantee of greatness.

And Showa era had the best-looking King Ghidorah.

No, that's actually a pretty common opinion and isn't very hyperbolic. I wouldn't totally agree with it but he's MOSTLY right. The new Gamera trilogy is better than all of the modern Godzilla movies by a substantial margin, especially the second and third. I definitely think the old gamera movies are vastly inferior to even the worst Godzilla movie, but the 90s trilogy is really great stuff. The director of them went on to do GMK and I don't think that one measured up to his Gamera movies (the whole subplot with the old man ghost brought it down several notches, it did however have the best depiction of Godzilla since the 54 one), but it does give you an idea of what his approach was compared to the other Godzilla movies of the time since that one is very distinctly different from the others. I'd still say that a couple of the old Godzilla movies are higher in quality (well, Godzilla Vs Mothra 64 anyway) and a lot of them are more entertaining to me and I'll always prefer Godzilla critters to Gamera ones, but those three movies really should be at the top of your list to see if you like Godzilla movies, especially any of the more recent ones like Destroyah.

Speak for yourself.. I love all the movies..some are better than others, I cant say there are any I dislike. Even the low budget stock footage Godzilla vs Megalon is fun cheese to sit through. I thought Megaguirus was so-so, as apparently so did Toho since they brought back new and familiar monsters for Godzilla.

I totally agree with this statement. It's why I can't bring myself to buy the SH MonsterArts version. *sigh*

And thanks dsman71!

You really should check out the Gamera trilogy. It's terrific. The Blu-ray bundle of all three is less than ten bucks (which is dirt cheap compared to the $20 I spent for each of the AVP DVDs). Unfortunately, there's no commentary by Gamera himself on the Blu-rays.

I was really disappointed by the Yonggary reboot, though. it was set in the U.S., with American actors, and it went by a different named (I don't remember it right off the top of my head Edit: Reptilian). I didn't realize it was the Yonggary reboot until I heard someone in the movie mention it by name.

Megaguirus was my favorite "new" Godzilla movie--happy that it looks like it's coming to blu (I'll wait until the blus are confirmed before I order it though--I already all the millennium DVDs.)

I highly doubt those are Blu-ray listings. Just look at the retail price, and the fact that this is Sony we're talking about. Those are more than likely DVD's, just as advertised.
